I've been told that Rover ECUs loose their settings when you disconnect the battery.
Does anyone know if this is true and if so can the ECU learn its settings again, or do I need to have it re-programmed?
(I need to disconnect the battery for safety reasons when I change the fuel filter) Read more
The headlamp/indicator units on my '95 Omega are quite stained and the glass/plastic has become rather "dirty" from the inside.
a) Is there any way of refurbishing them without resorting to new units?
b) If not, will the units from the (IIRC) 97MY onwards but pre-facelift fit?
TIA,
Chad.
P.S. The beam wasn't very good when I got the car, so I fitted some Phillips Vision + bulbs and not too bad now, however they could be much, much better..... Read more
Hiya Chad,
Did you find out the solution to the dirty headlamps??
I was thinking of changing the bulb type...which ones did you use and were they any good??
Ok, here goes. I applied for a job at bmw as a trainee sales exec and went for the interviews and got the job. Great i thought.
But i told a 'friend' of mine that i got the job, and he wrote in a letter to them just basically slandering me! They have now told me they would get back to me but it has been 3 weeks now and still nothing. They cant do this can they? I have turned down three other jobs even before this letter was sent in.
I cant believe someone would/had done this.
Anyone got any ideas on what i can do? They havnt rang me or sent me a letter or anything.
Do i have any legal rights?
I know its not that much to do with motoring but i need some help! Read more

It has been a while since my last post.....!
Had to rescue my brother, apparantly "car started to lose power and then stopped"
Other brother went and spent a morning playing with distributor caps etc to no avail. I appeared and heard it turn over and asked whether they had checked to see whether cam belt was still intact, blank look from both!
Disconnected distributor cap and undid coil cranked it over rotor arm remained motionless, so we removed cam belt cover and lo and behold it had snapped!!
Therefore we have a problem. I imagine that this is not an interference engine (like some Subarus etc) ie valves will be bent???
If so how do you think it is best to go about fixing?
Any help, advice, tips would be greatly appreciated.
Tip of the day, change the cambelt when you buy a car!!!!!!!!
regards

I'm araid I may have bad news.
The same happened on my 309 SRi, same engine as the 205 GTi, just before I took it over from my father.
Complete cylinder head rebuild, though a reconditioned head at around £300 may be cheaper.
Had this been a few years ago I could have sold you the rebuilt one from mine. It was written off and it went to the breakers complete with the head!

Hi,
I have just realised that my interior blower only works on number 4 setting.
1-3 don?t work, just 4.
Has anybody got any ideas as to what the problem could be?

its all been replaced now. have found out that the old style (screwless version) was replaced in 1995, so models after that 1995 should have the new style (torx screw version).
hey they do say that we learn something new everyday.

just to confirm what you all thought, it was the switch which was at fault. have also found out the exact location of it, its located under the air filter, ontop of the gearbox. two torx bolts are holding it in place.
cheers for all who helped me in this matter.

Evening all,
My heater blower motor finally gave up the ghost this morning, after a previous attempt to prolong its life. It was obviously my car marking the end of summer!
Anyway, VW are happy to relieve me of £233 plus VAT for a new motor. That's not even fitted. I've tried calling a Seat and a Skoda dealer but they can't confirm if the part is the same across the VAG range.
It's a non-A/C model.
Anyway, does anyone know if this part is also fitted to, say a Toledo or a Octavia? I've tried the usual second hand places without any success.
Any help would be great.
Many thanks,

Today,
I was shocked what happened to me and 2 friends at an aution today.
After arriving at 10am and bidding on a few cars one I was after for a member of staff from my workplace, another for the friends i took along with me; a member of the deleted floor staff (around 12.30) apporached my friend (female) and asked her if she would leave the site.
I turned round and again he asked me and her partner to leave the site. At first I considered him to be joking with her (obvious she was an auction novice) and turned to the car i was looking at and continued to look around it.
Again he was persistent and after a short while a colleuge joined him.
The said a regular customer had reported 'us' and pointed us out for 'keying cars' - when i heard this i laughed and told the chap he must have the worng perportraitors and carried on.
He was admittent, so i question further - he pointed me in the direction of the security hut to speak to the security manager.
Anyhow, I apporached the hut' knocked, entered and spoke to the security manager.
He said - a regular customer who he said 'word held more trust than mine' had reported and pointed me out for keying cars - a charge which infuruated me and i adimmetnly denied.
Anyhow - he was unwilling to discuss further the matter and said he was going to call the police to remove me from site.
I argued more, pleading me and my friends innocence making him aware that the couple (2 christian evangelicals) where more liley to pray for the car than scratcxh it in any way.
He refused to be moved. So i made him aware I was a regular visitor with colleuges and I offered to get a member of staf who is a personal friend to come over or ring the hut to confirm my validity as a honest and decent chap.
Again he refuses, however he took my number and where I had travelled, and said the 'manager' would call me when he had a chance!
I asked for the managers name and number - he refused! said he was to busy today, he will call you.
I went to reception to get the managers name- no luck, apparently he was conducting a sale.
I reapproached the security hatch to pleade with the chap (as travelling 60 miles to an auction to be wrongfully thrown out is very annoying and a huge timewaste)
- again, all he said was the manager would ring me this week - and say if i am allowed back to the auction again!
My friend requested if they had any cctv footage to prove our innocence - No was the reply.
I am shocked, angry, humiliated and have wasted alot of petrol, time and money today because a customer apparently seen a member of my party 'key a car'.
the place ws not busy at all, it is unlikely we could have been wrongfully identified.
What is my best course of action?
what are deleted customer services like?
has anyone else had similar experience at an auction centre?
why would anyone ever make such a stupid claim?
i totally agree and would myself report anyone I seen vandalising or causing damage to a vehicle - however, I can swear i have never done so much as scratch a car in all my life, was dress well and have been a regualr attender.
to same i am upset by the affair is an understatement. Read more
How could I refuse a nice polite request like that ??
I own a Astra Estate [Izuzu model] and recently a red warning light has started to flash , either on acceleration or going up a hill. At first I thought it had something to do with the seat belts but I think it may be the air bag warning light. The red light is on the right side of the panel and has what looks like a seat with a black circle.I'm abit concerned now , just incase there is a fault and the airbag goes off by it's self whilst driving. Is there something I can do ?, either by disabeling the device or checking the sensor , wherever that is . Read more
many thanks,Look's like I'll need a new battery too. It's not holding it's charge and theres no green light in the corner of the battery. Reading what sprice wrote about the over charging, it must have been putting to much current in the the cells.Wow, it's going to be an expensive Christmas ...battery & alternator =£190. That's alot of drink and pressy money.

I suppose you're right - there's only a theoretical risk of a spark when you leave the battery connected.
However you're guaranteed a spark when you reconnect a battery - and there will still be petrol vapour in the air!
