Does anybody know what those French mopeds with the engine on the front mudguard were called please? Read more
Just bought a 53 plate Clio 1.6 16v privilage. drove it home fine, drove it later on the night and the environment light came on flashing, and the car felt as though it was going to cut out, it would struggle as it went from 1st to 2nd etc then give a jolt. i've had a coil changed but it's still happening. Any ideas as the garage is reluctant to give me my cash back. Read more
Andy thought I'd just update you, The garage have agreed to take it to Renault and Renault have changed all of the coils and say it should be fine, so fingers crossed when I go pick it up it is. Thanks for your reply though.
I am looking for a lpg conversion for my Range Rover 1998 GEMS 4.6. Any recommended installers would be appreciated. Thanks

About 6 months ago, after playing with the air recirculation button and listening to the whirr of the servo too much on my Focus, it suddenly stopped. It's now stuck on recirculate, which means it's misting up very very quickly.
I'm not bothered about the ability to recirculate the air, but sods law would dictate that it's stuck on the one I don't want. Does anyone know where the servo is that controls the flap to circulate the air? I've bought a Haynes manual, but as usual it's as useful as a chocolate teapot. It tells me that the flap is servo controlled, but doesn't tell me where it is or how to get to it!
Thanks! Read more
<< Remove the glovebox &you will see the recirc flap plastic
gearing just to the right of the aperture.Move the flap manually
to give outside air & disconnect 2-pin plug to servo motor.
If I disconnect said 2-pin plug, can I then turn off the fan without the heater going into recirculated air mode? This characteristic has been annoying me ever since I bought my first Focus.

L\'escargot by name, but not by nature.
Hi, my 406 has developed a very annoying and at time noisy rattle.
traveling along at approx 70 mph, when i slowed to a halt cos of traffic i could hear an unusual rattle / tapping noise.
at first i thought it must be the cam, so had today off work to look at it.
i now think that its not the cam or hydralic tappets - the noise apppears to be coming from the drivers side of the engine, not sure if its coming from the cam belt area.
when i rev the engine the noise doesnt get louder so i guess its not the cam.
i notice that its wose on tickover but when we increase the revs to say a steady 1000 rpm the noise disappears.
also when getting into the car today I inadvertantly put my foot hard down onto the accelerator ( prob up to about 4000 rpm) and when the engine went back to tickover the noise had gone.
However after driving about 5 miles the rattle re- appeared.
I have checked the auxillary crankshaft pulley and it looks solid enough.
any thoughts, could it be the cam belt tensioners.
the noise is loud. however the drives a1

Cant supply any answers but I had the same thing on my 306 (HDi 90). Noticed loud ticking/tapping on starting up one evening. As you say it was coming from the rhs, around the top pulley wheel of the drive belt. The ticking appeared to be in sync with the rate the belt was turning. Also as you say it was only a specific rev range 800 (idle) to 1100rpm. It was very definately on/off at 1100rpm. Reducing the revs below idle didn't stop it.
This happened on a handful of journeys (cold and hot starts) but has not happened in the last 2000miles/2 months.
I am not sure if its related but about three weeks ago I found a bit of metal wrapped round the belt, I dismissed this as being picked up off the road but last night discovered this post... groups.msn.com/honestjohn/problems.msnw?action=Sho...3 the bit of metal shown here is identical to what I found so obviously my crankshaft pulley is on its last legs! Could the ticking have been this pulley starting to go?
Does anyone have experience of connecting an iPod to a car stereo system. I've seen those tape adapters, but I wanted to know if there is a more suitable way of connecting it.
I know for example BMW offer connection kits as an option on new models.

Having a Fabialous time.
Hi all,
I have a citroen ax 1992 and have been experiencing a problem for a few weeks now. It all started when my car wouldn't start, had the rac to look at it and they advised me the alternator has gotten wet in a storm and had failed but checked alternator jump started me and said it was now fine....Took the car for a drive came home half an hour later and wouldn't start again. I then bought a new battery as I the one I had was very old and had been run flat many a time after replacing it the car ran fine no probs.....but now 3 weeks on the ignition light is playing up...It either doesn't come on at all or flashes for about 2 seconds when car is first started?!?! but I have been running car now for 3 weeks and no problems starting?? any help welcome Read more
Looking at the discussion on Mondeos, I would like a cheap one with more comfort to replace my rather basic Focus for the 120 mile round trip commute to work. I was looking to spend £1500 - £2000, but have seen on autotrader a 2L Ghia R reg for £1195, But with 200k miles! It apparently has Full srvice history, and the cambelt was changed at 190k.
Firstly, would a Mondeo be a suitable replacement for my Focus, I realise the fuel costs would be higher, but things like heated mirrors and a heated screen would be nice at 6.30 on a Winter's morning.
Also, any opinions on a Mondeo with this mileage - will it be due for expensive repairs or imminent failures? I assume that a car with this mileage will have few original parts left! Read more
Yesterday £2500, would have bought you a 51 plate, in auction! a couple of other things to mention, about it....

Hi Folks,
Looking to retire (as far as the missed on L plates) my current N/99 Renault Clio 1.9D RL, after sterling service from 25k to 115k miles (work done in 5 years: new radiator (another needed now though, which is quite sad), wheel bearings, exhaust, plus new discs and pads on the front when the wheel came off on the M25, but that's a different story...).
Going some something bigger, and which will look good when turning up at client sites etc, with a budget around £4k, thinking 99 or '00 year model 406, Vectra or Mondeo, having driven the three, the 406s have "felt" best, followed by Mondeo then Vectra.
Would prefer the diesil engine pug/vectra but they may come out a little pricey, have test driven a few 2.0 petrol and done the maths on the fuel cost, can deal with that.
However, reading HJs car-by-car, and what car etc, the list of problems is a little worrying, so wanted to get people here's experiences / feeling for what the car-by-car says, all and any comments welcome!
From the car-by-car then:
* Light Build: Guessing this means supermarket knocks on the doors etc?
* Radiators failing after 3 years. + Coolant loss leading to overheating (same problem, or does the latter relate more to hoses?)
* Rear discs & parking brake trouble after 3 years: From my reading here in the backroom, this seems to be that the parking brake dies if you stop on it, and also seen that discs warp (specifically if you hold the car on the foot brake when it's hot?). Is this a significant issue? Have looked at service histories for the 2 i've driven (99V exec 63k and 00W GTX, both 2.0 petrol, neither had significant brake work)
* Electrical problems: I've seen numerous spedo comments (reboot option noted), and also "406 + water --> elec failure" posts. Anything else significant to worry about.
* Boot not locking on remote: i'll check cars and get dealer to sort if its a problem?
* Indicator stalks failing: not seen comments here in the backroom about this, really an issue?
* HDi timing belt pulley: from what ive read here, easy to keep eye on and replace when timing belt needed.
On initial reading this little lot started to put me right off, but reading the backroom has settled that down a little, i'm looking for you chaps to either settle me down, or put me off, once and for all.
Thanks!

I bought my ex fleet '99 'T'(facelifted)406 LX 90 HDi for just over £6K at 3 years old with 60K on the clock and a full service history. The only work it had in the first 60K was a
new waterpump at 59K and they changed the cam belt at the same time, thus saving me the money.
I've done 40K and the only problem I've had was a stone through the aircon condenser this summer which cost £315. With a 60 mile daily commute at the legal limit I average 53mpg and never lower than 50. It uses no oil and I do all my own servicing - it only takes a couple of hours (I change the oil every 6K).
My 406 is a reliable, quiet and comfortable cruiser and, hopefully, it will last me a good few years yet.
There are plenty available, so pick a good one and you won't be disappointed.

Have you noticed how few bees there are during the summer here? Go to France as stand at the kerb as one of the Moby-thing-umy-jigs go by. Hear the 50,000 bees? ZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
