Anyone know how much a new cylinder head will cost for a Nissan Primera 2.0 sve (new shape)?

£1000+ I would say. You really need to ring a dealer.

Ive just undertook one of the worst jobs ive ever done on a car.. the heater matrix. The old one was leaking in the footwell, so i got hold of one of ebay for £40 all in and went with the Haynes method. Word of advice to anyone who doesnt already know this: if you are doing any job more involved than changing the cam belt, leave the haynes well alone. It was so vague its unbelievable and as for putting it all back together, you cant beat the old classic: "refitting is the reverse of removal" ... ahh, words of wisdom. Anyway, I came accross problems at all stages due to the lack of info in the haynes and once the dash was refitted, i found that the air distribution lever refused to move at all.

Has anyone got any ideas other than take the dash off again? Im gonna test the cable whilst watching the flaps for unhindered travel after ive checked whether the wires are also unhindered.

Only other thing i can think of is that i may have possibly put the cable clips back on too tight which may be stopping the wire within from travelling?

Nasty job, avoid if possible.

Sorry to hear your plight! Did the same job just over a year ago, without the aid of a manual - it was still a pig of a job. However, everything worked fine afterwards! As I recall, straight run from back of controls to the heater flaps, so nothing to go wrong there. Suggest loosen heater control panel first for any obvious signs, and if a good contortionist, try and check the other end without taking it all apart.( The ability to hang upside down, face up, holding the head restraint with your toes helps)I hope you find the problem easilly!

The Fabia has come with a cassette/radio rather than a CD player. I was thinking this is a major downer and that I need to swap for a Skoda Symphony (same fit, but £320!!!) or some other standard CD player, but they're all a bit showy.

Then, brainwave.

I've still got all my old tapes from years back.

So I've dug them out and tomorrow will be the beginning of a trip back to the early 90s!! I've got a fair bit of stuff on CD, but some of the tapes I never got around to buying the new version. (not sure 808 State and Carter USM are available on CD!)

Now that's a bonus early start to the weekend.

Toodle-pip!!

Don't mention cats and speakers. I have had to replace a pair of drivers on mine as one of the little darlings managed to stick a claw in one driver on each speaker.

I think the old quad esl 57s are the perfect anti child and anti cat speakers with their ugly metal grilles :-)

I have done the mp3/cd comparison and noticed that mp3s tend to lack depth in the sound and soundstage. The difference is quite subtle eg like the difference between a cheap cd player and a mid range one.

I don't have a music player in either car and I don't seem to miss it. I might install one to keep the HWMBI happy on long journeys but I'll have to find one with a headphone socket :-)

Brother's 406 Coupe has developed a couple of problems.

1) The trip computer display is only showing the outside temperature - nothing else - any ideas where to start?

2) The main beam warning light isn't working. Assuming this is the bulb in the instrument cluster, how easy is it to change. I have found a previous thread for getting into the dash on a 406 saloon, is the Coupe dash similar?

Any knowledge much appreciated.

Quick update, we took the speedo binnacle out yesterday afternoon and were surprised to find no bulb or holder in the main beam light socket. Fitted a bulb and holder and all seems well. Surprisingly the job only took about 15 minutes for a couple of amateurs to do.

It has been suggested that the '97 SE V6 Coupes didn't have the trip computer function, does anyone know whether this is true or not?
It seems odd to have a big display with only the outside temp shown in top right corner.

I would check that the normal size tyres have been fitted.
Has someone fitted lower profile tyres for effect?
If so the speedo reading will probably be adrift.

I would be surprised if wheel /tyre sizes varied much between your MI and my face lifted varient.

Can some one out there enlighten me on the following questions that have been puzzling me for years, but nobody I have asked has been able to answer?

Why do two strokes need oil mixed with the fuel instead of using a seperate supply from a sump, and in the same vein, how come four strokes need valve gear and all the associated mechanics when a two stroke can draw in fuel through a port in the cylinder?

The only difference I can see between the two engines is the number of bangs per cycle, but the answer must be something blindingly simple that I have missed.

Got loads of little enines here but how about 0.020 Cubic inch or 0.3CC turns 5 x 3 inch prop at around 12,000RPM now 40odd years old! Also 0.75 Cu Inch which is 12.5CC and turns a 14 x 6 inch prop at around 10,000RPM.

My car is under 3 years old but out of warranty due to 87,000 miles. Last week I learnt the head gasket has gone (after a M25 breakdown!) but because this will be its 3rd replacement (last one 20,000 miles ago)Nissan say they will only guarantee the work if I have a new cylinder head as well! The car has been garaged several times due to overheating problems and thousands of pounds spent trying to correct whatever it is going wrong. Nissan insist they are not liable and will not even offer a discount to do this work. Any advice?

ps: The car is still driveable on very short journeys (kids to school etc)and seems to behave itself temperature wise, but am I risking an engine seizure?

I have been offered a superb lease deal on a Saab 9-5 Linear Estate 2.2TiD Auto. One year lease, 10,000 miles, £240pcm. Far and away better than any other deal for anything similar - generally up to £400pcm. I know its getting long in the tooth, but its only for one year. It's the sort of car I want, but mainly gives me a breathing space of 12 months to decide what I really want.

My question is this. The 2.2 TiD engine is the old engine right? Being replaced by the 1.9 GM unit. What I can't find anywhere is the specs of the 2.2. Mainly, what are its power and torque levels and what is the economy and performance with the Auto box.

Yup - went for the usual 3 mile test drive today in a demo wih fumes in the tank. It went OK, still a bit tight (only 1k miles) and the ride wasn't as bad as I had read about.

The exterior design is not as coherent as the X5 (ha ha - far too much Bangle about it) and whilst the interior isn't really swish in basic SE, it all seems to fit together well and the driving position suits me. If the CRV had steering wheel that adjusted for reach as well as rake I would have kept it.

We'll see what happens

SjB {P}

A thirty something friend of the missus winds me up with her blase attitude to driving. She careers round everywhere, completely cutting corners, has no intention of ever sticking to the speed limit (and wonders why she's one more SP30 away from a ban, a fact that only applies because her hubby took one six point Gatso 'hit' for her), has zero observation or anticipatory skills (total reactive approach), and is usually on her handheld phone or searching for makeup.

This is no windup or overstatement.

If ever I comment, I get "Look, just chill out will you. What's it to you? Life's for living..."

When I'm driving her, usually at the speed limit in one of the thirty or forty MPH limits between their house and a restaurant, I get "Jeez, get a pink fluffy dice move on will you! We want to be home before Christmas".

Anyway, what did she do today?

Had her third "driving in to the back of somebody else" in eighteen months, this one whilst admitting (to hubby and my wife) that she was replying to a text she had just received at the time. Serious damage to both cars this time.

Aaargh. What will it ever take? I have long thought that education, not penalty, is the best course of action, but now firmly believe that in many cases, this is not so, and the rest of us will have to suffer as a consequence. People can only be educated if they have enough nouse to want to be educated.

BTW, to cap it all: Yes large "BOB" sticker in the back window. Read more

SjB does you friend actually strap her child into the car when driving?

Apart from White Van man being exempt from the mobile phone laws, many people, especially poorer people from the ethnic minorities (and I include my own brethren - orthodox jews) just leave their children on the back seat, ready to be catapulted out of the car at the first emergency stop, let along accident.

Just today, a clearly poor couple in an ancient and beaten up Proton - she in the back with baby across her knee and no seatbelts in sight anywhere. I thought children were precious to these people who have huge numbers of offspring. Why you ask them why they do it, its clear it simply doesn't occur to them that it may be dangerous - its as if the 'givens' of 30 years ago are still valid and they live in a time warp. I was left to roll around the car in the mid 1960s, but my children are strapped in like in a rally car.

I'm looking to replace my speakers in my Wifes car.

The question I have is which are the best to use, where I am thinking of approx. 80/100 watts to suit the Radio, 130mm/5" dia. fitted in the front doors and rear shelf.

1) Cone

2) 2way

3) 3way

4) Co-axial

Look forward to your opinions. Read more

Thanks for your tips, but whats the difference between these 2way and co-axial speakers in lay-man terms.

I've seen somewhere that its important to have as large magnets as possible to give best sounds??
