Mk III Golf P Plate 1.6 engine. A strange fault where the engine appears not to warm up and between 6 to 9 minutes into the journey the engine will just stall once, it will normally willingly restart and not fail again on that journey. On other trips the gauge quickly rises to a normal temp and never stall/cuts out. It this a sensor I’ve checked the sensors for the guy and they appear to be OK so I suspect the barrel type stat fitted to these models although the cool engine causing a stall when you still have some throttle on seems very odd. My other thought is the Hall effect sensor in the Dizzy but it restarts immediately on most occasions. The owner has experienced the car not restarting on a couple of occasions and one such breakdown caused a AA guy to change the coil ! wrong. Can you purchase just the induction ring for the diz with the cost of the whole dizzy. ?Regards Peter Read more

What engine type do you have? There should be a white label stuck in the spare wheel well with a 3 letter code next to Eng/Mot.

It's been just over a year since a new law was introduced regarding the use of mobile phones whilst driving.

So this weeks poll, as suggested by Longdiver is now available.

Backroomers, my '96 406 2.1TD has tonight started to think twice about starting. When I turn the key it revs for a second then dies.

After about 6 or 8 attempts it finally starts ok, but then ticks over with just a hint of misfire for a minute or so - then drives fine.

It starts ok when warm. I assume a sensor somewhere is playing up? All dash lights appear normal.

I'd be grateful for any hints, won't be able to get it to my spannerman until early next week.

Thanks

If you mean it starts immeadiately and the revs rise up to say 1500rpm or more (or abnormaly high) then it stalls, this would suggest to me air in the fuel system. Is that what you mean?

I once had a punctured fuel filter diaphragm on a diesel 505, and that is how it behaved, the only difference being that the leak was so severe it would not run correctly at all, but when it was eventually started (after bleeding the system), the revs would rise quite high, say to 2000rpm and then it would stall.

Go to the manufacturer of the immobilizer;it can't be Ford-theirs will work on the red key which will act like a normal key in door and ignition.

All the way to work. Loads of cars being well-driven with good gaps from the car in front. They had their lights on (it was dark) and they mostly used their indicators. The drivers were courteous and generally acknowledged people giving way to them with either a wave or a flash of the indicators. A half hour traffic queue saw a great deal of patience shown.

(Just thought I'd give thanks for the thousands of good drivers I never seem to notice on the roads)

If only we could educate people to filter alternate lanes!

Absolutely. Still, if people would rather sit in a long queue and shake their fists at me, I'm not all that bothered!

Help! Drove my car home on Monday evening - not a hint of anything being wrong with it. Went to drive it yesterday (the following day) and it just would not tick over - had to keep my foot on the accelerator or the engine just died on me. Managed to limp to the garage today and the car was ticking over nicely by the time I got there (about 1.5 miles and a bit of a traffic jam from home). Was hoping that it would be something simple like a temp sensor ( have had this happen before and the symptoms are similar) but the garage have phoned to say that they have been working on it all day are not sure what the problem is. What are diagnostic machines for? They have suggested it could be something to do with the accelerator and is likely to be expensive to repair. Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Thanks for the above reply. The garage have cleaned the throttle body and it is running a bit better now - absolutley fine when engine is warm, but it still 'stalled' twice on the way home. I may take your advice and fill up elsewhere in future - as your wife used to, I too tend to shop and fill up at our local Tesco. Thanks again.

With the denied rumours about Dave Richards moving on a few weeks ago, I did wonder "Well, we've got the smoke, where's the fire?" so guess this was it.

Would love to read JB's biography in ten years time when he feels able to comment on what's plainly been going on, and which I dare say fits somewhere in the jigsaw. Read more

Yup, bye bye DR, and in with a 45% stake from Honda and some new management. Can't see him leaving empty handed, somehow, though!

From an environmental point of view which fuel caues the least harm I know diesels produce less CO2, but what about other emissions?

Any suggestions? Read more

Easy way to end this arguement:

Small car: diesel >> useful with manual

Big car: petrol especially if mated to an auto box.

Hi,

does anyone know the cheapest cross channel ferry {Dover ?} with a car and caravan late July returning 3 weeks later?

Speed ferries are £50 any time return next summer {cars only}, P&O say caravans free, but thay want around £350 or the same crossing

Also a satisfied customer of Norfolk Line. Does what it says on the tin. Nice ferry, Midnight Merchant, with loads of room in the bar looking observation lounge looking forward. Ample exterior deck space (unlike Seafrance Rodent. A functional but efficient terminal at Loon Plage. In 2004 <£120 return out Sunday afternoon in mid july, returning late afternoon on 6 august for a Xantia estate with roof box.
