Speed ferries are £50 any time return next summer {cars only}, P&O say caravans free, but thay want around £350 or the same crossing

Hi all,
Couldn't find this question posted before, so I'm gonna ask it now!
This Polo I bought (with only 55000 miles on 1993 grrr) just started the classic tartar sauce in the filler cap / white smoke out of exhaust so i just took off the cylinder head. Have had it checked and skimmed. What i was wondering is:
- are the head bolts that you see at E.G. GSF Parts, eurocarparts.com weaker or inferior to the ones you get from a VW dealer ?
They cost about 1/4 of the price which seems a ridiculous saving...
- what about the gaskets, especially the head one? Is it best to get the official VW one and not an aftermarket one ?
- I also had the timing belt changed about 7 weeks ago- so will it be worth changing that while i'm at it? Some people say that once they've been used you should never reuse them, however short the mileage.
- how likely is it that it will last for much longer, assuming i rebuild it properly?
Thanks a lot.
I'll buy you a beer (in theory)

Thanks Peter.
One other thing thats happened is the exhaust manifold heat shield was so corroded i had to hack the nuts and a couple of the studs off in order to remove it...so now i have no way of attaching the heat shield (other than glue).
How useful is it ? I guess the hot air pipe that goes from here into the air filter is needed for the carb. It is also ticking over too high after warming up... could be related ?
Excuse my numptiness!
thanks

Hi guys,
I've checked the contacts (there's no corrosion) & replaced bulbs, but I still can't get my brake lights or rear headlights to be of equal brightness. What should I look at next ?
Cheers,

thanks Solara & HenryK, will try that now. Sorry for slow reply, had major PC problems. Sorted now though.
All those who scoff at diesels in any form in any car will be very upset indeed...:-)

I switched to a Volvo D5 a couple of months ago (having obviously consulted to combined wisdoms of this forum first. ;) )
Overall I'm very pleased with it. In terms of performance, compared to the petrol model it's much the same or faster until it runs out of puff at a bit over 4000rpm so is missing the last 1500rpm or so of perfomance you'd get from the turbo petrol but it is more than adequate for day to day spirited driving. It's certainly vastly superior to the non-turbo Volvo petrols.
However, it is not as smooth or as quiet as the petrols and I am yet to encounter a diesel car which is. There is still a noticable bit of diesel clatter in the 1800-2100rpm range under load although it's much smoother when revved higher - even to the point of making a quite sporty growl. It's acceptable but I wouldn't want anything less smooth than this.
It'll pull from just about any speed but needs to be kept above 1700rpm to be on the boil. Power delivery is quite linear above this.
The upside is that even when driven quite hard and at high speed motorway cruising it'll return 42-44mpg. After many years of owning petrol cars which deliver low 20's when driven hard (no matter what the official figures may say) this is a nice change. The 600 mile plus range is also a big plus point ignoring the cost aspect. It'll probably be easier to resell too.
I have 1993 1.0 XN Plus (my sons) which "bunny hops" after a longish period of deceleration. I.e. change down to 2nd toward a roundabout then either does;nt want to accelerate or bunny hops violently, blip the throttle hard with foot on the clutch usually clears it. It seems fine from cold only appears to happen when warm/hot. Also when hot it is ticking over too fast (no rev counter) guess 1200 rpm. No problems otherwise pulls well and will cruise at French autoroute speeds! Had to replace the head gasket when we first go it but ran fine for quite a long time after. No sign of oil in water or vise-versa. Stepper moter seems ok temperature sensor seems to change resistance with temperature. Bosch single point injection. Any ideas ECU throttle/injection, stepper/pot, sensor or wiring? Help please, driving me balmy!!

Hi
I was about to buy a car yesterday. It had one previous owner but the car was bought from a dealer. I would like to know how long the dealer had the car - does it say this somewhere on any of the documents??
The reason I'm asking is:
The car was bought in Feb 2000 by a Leasing company.
First inspection was in Feb 2001 with 16000 miles.
MoT available in Feb 2002 with 31000.
Next MoT in Feb 2003 with 31250(!!). Car made only 250 miles in one year.
Car bought by new owner in Aug 2003 with 31300 miles from a dealer, with inspection in Aug 2003.
Currently, the car has 41000 miles.
Basically, the car made 300 miles in 1.5 years. The current owner says, the car might have been on the forecourt of the dealer for so long. What do you think? Wouldn't it say something like that on the V5?
Any info on this would be much appreciated.
Regards

Many thanks for all your comment. This is one of the best boards I have ever seen.
As for the car, I have decided against it. Not gonna take the risk. The car is not even cheap. I'll try looking for a one owner car from now on.
Cheers
Apart from fuel consumption - are there any other negatives on this car? If you run one, or know someone who does, any comments would be of interest. Read more
To bad the 3.3 V6 isnt available.
I don't want to pass judgement on the obvious danger of only having one hand on the wheel, because I'm sure it is equal to me changing a CD, eating sweets or applying lipbalm!
However, how on earth do you put up with the smell (I get very travel sick, and can't spend time in a car that's ever been smoked in), the smoke and the black film on the windows?
Have you ever set yourself alight accidentally?

Looking at some of the comments now being passed in this thread, I think it's had it's day.

Are there any specific tools available to make this job easier i.e. minimising opening up the head? Its a DOHC engine 16V 1.6 Ecotec. I've only got trouble on one cylinder - Would the valve seats for this need to be grinded in or is it all supposed to be a snug fit where I don't need to chanage anything?
Please help.

Also a satisfied customer of Norfolk Line. Does what it says on the tin. Nice ferry, Midnight Merchant, with loads of room in the bar looking observation lounge looking forward. Ample exterior deck space (unlike Seafrance Rodent. A functional but efficient terminal at Loon Plage. In 2004 <£120 return out Sunday afternoon in mid july, returning late afternoon on 6 august for a Xantia estate with roof box.
