Hi my wife?s Clio 1.2, year 2000, older shape has developed a low intermittent humming noise, it appears to be coming from transition or steering.
It occurs about 5 minutes after start up. It disappears when stopped or moving slowly. It also disappears when the car is lightly accelerated, but returns as soon as your foot is lifted off the pedal.
Any ideas?

Why do some people think they look cool, so much so that they use them all the time? I am totally fed up of being dazzled when driving home at night in the winter (mainly on unlit country lanes) by these people.
The worst culprits are tall 4WD vehicles as their Foglights are just a bit higher than in normal cars. Peugeot 406, Fiat Punto and last shape Fiestas also seem have incredibly bright front fogs too. Cars approaching on inclines and bumpy roads also make this use of front fogs extra annoying.
In my opinion, there is no excuse for using them unless visibility is so seriously reduced that they are needed (and even then they don't always help).
Does anyone have any ideas for ways this problem can be reduced? Anything manufacturers could do? E.g. big letters "F O G" on the dash when they are on?
I also think that there are two types of offender:
1) Cool "dudes" - I don't suspect I need to add more to this.
2) Others who think they are "Driving Lights" or some such nonsense. Handy for "lighting up the kerb"...
Sorry if this has been done before, but had to get it off my chest.

That's not a foglight; they've run over a scooter.
OK, another change of career beckons.
Have £3-4k to spend, will be doing around 40k miles per year, New Forest to Reading daily commute!!! (looking forward to that, not!).
Any ideas what to go for, must be a diesel and have air-con, thats the only two things I am definite about.
Was thinking Mondeo?, Focus?, go on tell me I'm mad!
Cheers all.

Considering how frequently questions on the theme of very economical commuter cars occur, perhaps it would be useful (mod's??) to have a listing of cars from the last few years that will realistically achieve 50 mpg. Particularly 50mpg 75mph motorway cruisers.
Can't nominate any from personal experience, our 2004 Micra 1.4 does 48 mpg at 70mph, but drops to 44mpg at 75-78mph. Our old 1998 Peugeot 406 1.9TD managed about 44mpg at 75mph. Our 2000 Petrol Mondeo 1989cc seems to get close to 40mpg at 75mph.
I have just bought a 1997 Omega CDX Estate with the 2.5TD BMW engine (Manual) .It has 70k on the clock. In general the car seems fine, (Dispite hitting a Deer 24hrs after purchasing it and ripping the near side mirror off).
My query is this:
I decided to see what the car could do.
However in 5th gear I was doing about 90-95mph at around 3000rpm only halfway up the scale of this 6 cylinder engine when there was a sudden power loss. The revs drop and obviously the speed drops to just under 90mph and then it picks up again. It is just like the cruise control was in control (if you know what I mean).
Also sometime if I need to set off sharpish from a T'junction there can be a lack of power as if the turbo isn't kicking in.
I don't know if these are related.
I have been told that turbos have an overpressure valve. I thought this was only found on supercharged engines.
Does the BMW 2.5TD have an over pressure valve?
And if so could it be the cause of this?
Could it be the engine management limiting the speed or revs? It is possible to go right through the rev range in lower gears, so it isn't limiting just he rev's.
Has anyone else noticed this, or does anyone have any clue as to where to start looking.
Cheers,
Charlie.

Thanks for the advice,
Looks like I have got quite a few things to be getting on with this weekend.

Hi Guys, what do you rekon to the ford puma? I's basically a souped up Fiesta, isn't it? How does it handle / perform in real road diving?

A real charmer - great handling. 1.7 best; there are quite a few around but many will have been fully exploited for their dynamics (and rightly so).
No point in owning one otherwise..:-)

Following some good news at the weekend I'm now able to afford around 15K for a secondhand diesel vehicle.
I was considering a VAG group PD car but as I have extra funds I can get my ideal car, a BMW 330D.
I've seen some for sale at www.theinternetcarshowroom.com. Does anyone have any experience of this place? Their prices are about 2K less than a BMW dealer which seems a little too good to be true.
Failing that does anyone know where else I can source a 330D at a good price. I don't mind having a go at auctions if I can save money and get a car with some warranty left. Read more
Thanks for the tip Marlot I had a look and as the saying goes "if something looks too good to be true it usually is".
I won't be buying from them.
(Sorry for shameless repeat posting , but this got hidden in a long thread, and looking for any responses)
I have finally narrowed the choice of SUVs that can be bought in the price range of approx £12000-14000.
The Nissan Xtrail-Looks good, claimed fuel consumption 39mpg! on the diesel.Plus Nissans famed reliability record.
Rav4-Claimed to drive like a hatchback, good resale values and reliability, dont know how good the diesel is though.
Hyundai Tucson/Terracan-less dearer, though not so good resale values and reliability.
Santa Fe-looks a bit unusual in places hence a no no, but cheaper 2nd hand than the others.
Nissan Terrano-Dont know much about this one, but seems a bit dated in comparison.Plus a mileage of 23mpg on the diesel!
Honda CR-V -otherwise good but no diesel.
Any Backroomers who have actually owned/driven one of these , or better still has driven more than one of them, would appreciate your opinions. Also if there is anything else that can be obtained at this price range which has a reasonably good resale market demand .
Thanks for all responses. Read more

The headline deal was for the singlecab whereas we opted for the doublecab GL and higher mileage. 3 payments up front is the norm, with 23 or 35 payments to follow and a £95 doc fee. I've done a lot of digging around and new-car-leasing are consistently undercutting not only their independent competitors, but the manufacturers' deals too.
I'm drawn to a 2.5TDi Touareg Auto and have found them to be in the region of £30-£60 per month cheaper than their rivals.
If you are in the market for a new car, I can personally recommend them.
I have a problem with a squeal coming from the rear of my 1995 ZX. It occurs after braking (eg for a roundabout) following a journey of about 20 miles at 60-70mph. When I accelerate again, the squeal begins - quietly at first but then gets louder.
It has been suggested that it is just dust on the brake pads but as the squeal isn't there all the time, especially when the car is cold, I'm not sure about this.
Any ideas what the problem may be?

I have just bought a 318 tds bmw. it is a 95 model with 100 k on the clock.
the engine sounds sweet with a nice diesel rattle, but a little tappet noise on heavy acceleration.
there is no evidence of crank case pressure.
the engine starts ok from cold when given three blasts with the heater plugs. However the engine is very reluctant to start when warm. The engine will start eventually but requires 4 seconds and more on the starter to fire it up. this always results in a great cloud of white (unburned diesel) smoke and could I guess eventually damage the engine. I have replaced the fuel filter. and checked that the fuel pump delivers fuel from the tank to the filter ok.
there does not appear to be a leak in the system between the injection pump and the injectors. my next guess is that the valve clearances are not correct.(I think they maybe auto adjusting but am not sure, as I have not looked under the cover yet.) unfortunatly I cannot get hold of the tech spec as there is not a haynes manual for the diesel engine.
does anyone have any ideas as to what could be causing this warm starting problem or how to adjust or replace/repair the tappets?
any replies appreciated even if they are generic diesel warm start problem suggestions.
thanks. Read more

I'd also go with the old bill. I saw a red, most basic looking Vectra (newest shape) in red with a nice 3.2 badge on the back. We were in traffic so I could have a nosy in. Uniformed cop, but couldn't see anything at heater level (nor a camera) that gave away it's true job...of course, until it took off, sirens wailing.

Hi Family, yes it does seem to vary a bit when going round corners. And yes the creaking sunroof is a pain. I will have a check while turning a corner.
