Hi,
I have a 1997 Vauxhall Vectra V6 SRi, yesterday when i turned the radio on and off very quickly the dash display froze, I had to disconnect the battery to get it to go off.
On reconnecting the battery the instrument panel is not working, no speed, fuel gauge, also no indicators, no electric windows and no electric exterior mirrors are working, I have checked all the ordinary fuses within the car all seem to be ok, the radio now works ok again but these new problems have come about.
can anyone advise which fuse/relay has blown if any?
otherwise I will have to only use the car for journeys that do not involve turning left or right, as I cannot even put the window down to do a hand signal!!!
thanks in advance...........

Dear all,
Any one had experience of this ?
Basically to cut a long story short I purchased a SEAT Leon 2 weeks ago from a dealer, with the car as part of this scheme.
Over the last few days having had a chance to go over it with a fine toothcomb, it seems clear that the car has had an accident and probably had both nearside doors replaced, along with other miscellaneous faults - including strange window markings previously posted on the technical forum.
I will be having a forceful discussion with the dealer tomorrow morning therefore.
The terms and conditions of the scheme make reference to a "No quibble, 30 day, unlimited mileage exchange". I intend to take this up therefore.
Any thoughts/experience ?
Cheers,

Agree also.
The '03 plate SE model is being replaced by a '53 plate SX model - now on Wednesday.
Salesman didn't have a clue about the badge change - SX has exactly the same features as the earlier SE model, with the inclusion of colour coded lower bumpers and aluminium type trim inside.
Turns out the '04 SE model has been upgraded to the 130 bhp PD TDi (seen the current thread in Technical), with a few more features (upgraded alloys etc).
All this was 'discovered through own research, not an informed discussion with the dealer ...

Reently purchased a used Passat, fitted with original (?) Sony XR-6459 Radio Cassette (detachable front), it worked fine for several weeks, then only worked intermitently, and now has stopped altogether - Appears to be dead!
I've checked the wiring, there appears to be a live feed to it !
Can anyone tell me where I can find fault finding instructions for this radio, or any known faults that are worth checking, before going to too much expense ??

Yes chances are it is only earthed through the aerial screen wire, this may have a poor connection on the body. Clip a wire from the radio body to an earth point on the car.
I'm looking to upgrade my Audi Allroad and as far as I'm aware there won't be a new version of the Allroad based on the new A6 Avant.
Could anyone confirm that this is the case?
And if so, does anyone know the latest date at which you'd be able to order one of the last Allroads?
Many thanks,

Perhaps VAG would rather you purchased a ToeRag. Same pricing for the V6TDi and a similar vehicle.
Firstly, I've no connection with Volvo, but thought I should publicise their Freedom test drive event because it was very quiet there today - I had a great time driving various Volvo's around Hampshire.
They allow you to take your selection (pre book 2, but if available, others on the day) away for 30 mins which means you get a great chance to really give the cars a proper test drive.
It was so quite, we got to have 4 drives. I was really blown away by the V70 D5 Auto, so its definetly on my short list.
There are 5 venues around the country and there are various dates until Feb. If anyone is interested the link is here:

Having checked the link, it would appear that Volvo don't want to sell cars in Scotland...
Specifically from J15 to J25.
Been offered a job but it would mean me going from Heathrow to Enfield and was wondering if anybody does this commute daily and how long/bad the journey is. I tried the journey once when i went for the interview and it wasnt too bad, took about 50 mins in rush hour.
Also tried going on the North Circular but that was a nightmare took nearly twice as long...
Anybody have an opinion ?

I think Mapmaker is thinking along the right lines... i have been adding up the hours in my head and to spend 15 hours a week communting that is not very appealing at all to me. The job is better along with the money as well but is it worth the communte ? I am inclined to say no.
The co are flexible with the working hours to an extent and I could start at 8am and finish at 4.30pm but would i miss the rush hour on the way home ?
I think Public transport is a big no no it would mean me getting on the tube (picadilly line) and then change onto the central line towards liverpool st and then get a train to brimsdown followed by a bus or long walk !!!
In terms of time i think it takes about 1.5 hours plus.
I currently travel around 20,000 miles a year and may look to replace my current car a Rover 416i 99T with nearly 80,000 miles in the next 18 months and are trying to work out the best way of minimising deprecetion. On my present car wich cost £6,000 2.5 years ago I have lost according to what car price guide £5,300. Taking the above into account what would be the better option
(A) Keep the car for 18 months and replace with 3year old car
with 30,000 miles and keep for 4years.
(B) Keep the car for 18 months and replace with 3year old car
with 60,000 miles and keep it for 4years.
(C)Keep the car for 30 months then either replace with a 3year
old car with 30,000 miles or 60,000 miles.
Thank you Read more
Let's imagine (being pesimistic) that next year your engine blows up and needs to be replaced. £2000.
The year after your gear box becomes unserviceable. £1000.
The year after than you need an entire new exhaust system. £600.
Let's also assume the car is then so old and undesirable that it's worth nothing, and you scrap it. £700 you could have got if you sold/PXed the car now.
Total cost for these three years: £4300.
Cost of your last 2.5 years' motoring (in depreciation alone): £5300.
And that's being _extremely_ pesimistic.
Old cars are cheaper than new. They're not as nice, they're not as shiny, they're not so good for pulling chicks, but they're cheaper.

My dad has owned his 1995 Rover 416 Tourer from new. As he had bought it just before retirement, it has only covered 85,000 miles and is regularly serviced. Over the last year he has noticed a sharp drop in economy from the average 43mpg he was originally getting to about 30mpg. I have checked to see if the brakes are binding but all is okay. The air filter is clean and it barely uses oil between services. There is no roof rack or tools being carried around either.
Any ideas as to what is causing the sudden increase in consumption?
Thanks in advance

Slightly surprised your dad managed 43mpg..Estate is heavier than hatch/salloon. I only know of 2 people that had one.None achieved this figure..The 30 to 35 is more like it.2.0 litre Which. I had ie GSI was in region of 20/25. So personaly dont think you have a problem

I am buying a car but the probate on the car has not been granted yet due to death(dont ask) but i need the car now. can i just pay for it and register it in my name Read more
Not for the first time I stand corrected!
In my situation, we sought legal advice before we did anything. The Solicitor, who initially drew up the will of the deceased and subsequently applied for probate after her death, advised me that in practise there would be no reason for me not to divest some items.
The solicitor was confident that the will we had was the most recent. Hence several items, the car included were not specifically listed in the will and thus were treated as part of the disposable assets of the estate. In addition the transferring of the vehicle to the wife rather than an unknown third party probably made things easier.
As I was also a beneficiary of the will I simply ensured that none of the other beneficiaries needed the vehicle, then agreed a value with them. The eventual finacial distribution was altered to compensate the other beneficiaries.
You're probably right though Cardew, In the strictest sence perhaps I should have waited for probate to be granted. However, I acted on the advice given for the situation affecting the estate I administered. The estate that Andrew is trying to buy the car from may be in a totally different set of circumstances. In addition, the deceased was my mother and hence I had a pretty good handle on who she owed money to or who owed the estate.

Typical, just as I put the old Pug up for sale I get a new warning light appear!!
When I apply the handbrake I get a beep and the computer tells me that the "Brake Fluid Level Low". It isn't low - it's right on the max mark. The handbrake holds the car fine, and in fact it just passed the MOT since this warning started appearing.
I guess it could be a dodgy sender unit but why would it do this only when the handbrake is applied?
Anyone with any experience of this and (hopefully) an easy fix? Read more
Thanks for all replies - it'll be the weekend before I get a chance to work on it but it sounds pretty straight forward, even I should be able to manage it.
Balford, thanks for the link - I feel suitably ashamed for not searching properly!
