It's a style thing - mostly involving owners of BMWs - at least in our area.
It's illegal, of course, unless visibility is less than 100 metres but the police never bother pulling anyone up.

The worse offendors for this are BMW 4x4 SUV drivers. They are always in the middle lane as well, dont wear seatbelts, have bullbars on the front, are constantly on the mobile phone and the police do absolutley nothing about it because they are chasing innocent speeding motorists. Its a communist plot.
There think that covers it all. DD's tongue must look like pasta shreds now.

They also slam on the anchors for speed cameras regardless of whether they already within the limit or not.

I can see why manufacturers put them on, as they are a value-added sales feature, but they should switch to long range driving lamps which come on to supplement main beam, and only come on with main beam, this would be more useful in the UK, and probably everywhere, as I have found foglights useless in fog, let alone fine conditions.

One solution is on the Mk IV Supra (and others?). The fog lights are mounted at the same height and outboard of the headlamps, with a flat beam. They make good marker lamps when headlamps are really not needed. And they are handy for lighting up the kerb.

RF, you forgot to mention that they are rumoured to defeat speed cameras...

Now in defence of foglights. As someone who used to trek across the pennines every day (A62 from Huddersfield to Oldham), there were many days where fog meant visibility of less than 40/50 yards. You couldn't see another car if it didn't have fogs on, so front fogs were vital.
Another good use of them is on country lanes where you can see any animals, stones or other debris at the side of the road. And as a previous post says, if correctly adjusted they shouldn't dazzle you. And thats the problem: In the main (now I know this is a generalisation but stay with me) the boy racer brigade either have older cars that have lost their alignment, or have aftermarket lights that haven't been properly fitted.
So, in defence fog lights are useful if used properly!

I got pulled by the police for having my front foglights on once...on a car with no front fogs! Luckily for them one of my brakelights had just died, so they have something they could tick me off with.

Sorry but
Thanks to Mr Ford's great design the light switch on both my Mondeo II and the Focus I drive are as follows.
The Front fog lights have to be switched on BEFORE the rear fog lights.
IMO this is a very poor design. In fact it seems back to front or it should be back then front.
So please do not be too hard on Ford drivers in poor vosibility who only want to warn off the guy behind.

I agree Henry - and the warning lights aren't too prominent either; nestled down to the right next to the light switch.

Could this be a foglight AND a 4x4 thread in one? Great.
Yeah, and let's throw in Bull Bars for good measure :)
|
Woah - you can't have a 4x4 thread without mentioning speed bumps...or cameras for that matter....or speeding.
NW - WHERE ARE YOU???
