Seen on another website,
about someone asking about using a dissolved dishwasher tablet to clean the scale etc in his cooling system before putting fresh anitfreeze into the system.
Could this be a cheaper way than using the rip off products off the shelf for doing the same thing. Read more
Hi all,
I've been having a problem with the temperature display on my Fiesta XR2i 1991 (CVH). It seems to only work when it feels like it and is not consistence. Might work tomorrow but then won't work for a week, for example. It justs gives a below minimum reading if that makes sense, ie it stays at the bottom level as if you had the ignition off.
I have replaced the thermostat, after advise from a prior thread, but to no success. I just want to know what else it could be. I'm thinking it could be the sender unit but am not sure if I have located it correctly. Is it the screw type device near the thermostat housing which when unscrewed from the head is about 2 inches long with a copper end that goes into the cylinder head?
Or could it be the Temperature Gauge and if so does this refer to the actual instrument in the dash? Any assistance greatly appriciated.

Be sure to note the colour of the band around the top of the sensor when you go to by a new one. I had one of these things go on my Escort. Funny thing was, it still had varying resistance with temperature.
It was a bit of a gamble locating the right sender, I forget the colours now, but it was something like I had a purple band, and they had a choice of green or black! :-)
Have a leak at the front end of my exhaust where the pipe meets the manifold. Not got my hands dirty yet but am advised there are two springs which seal the joint but allow the pipe to move about. Wondered if this is going to turn into a nightmare finger nipping job or if it is relatively easy? Any tips would also be appreciated!
Have a similar running and starting prob to some other diesel pugs mentioned on here. Difficult to start and lumpy idle but pulls well and seems to drive normally. Sounds like new injectors but I'd like to check the diesel pump timing first - how is it done? Thanks a lot Read more
This is fitted to my diesel and petrol Peugeots. Two bolts pass through a collar which goes behind the "bell" formed at the end of the exhaust pipe and through a flange on the exhaust manifold. Springs around the bolts force the "bell" against the flange, with a fibre ring between the two to form a seal.
Changed a few over the years. You need a 10mm spanner and socket, and it may be easier to get access from below with a long extension. Gets very hot, and seizes, and you usually break one of the bolts. Do it cold, as you can easily get burnt if you don't. Spraying with easing oil doesn't always work
Pattern parts can be slightly different, so don't throw the old one away without checking. Original Peugeot may be worth the money! The fibre ring can fail also, rather than the mechanism
Frankly, I have found it better to take it to a local independent exhaust fitter (Stoke on Trent), as the extra few pounds over doing it yourself is worth it, and he gives a year's guaranteee.
I had a 1L 16valve L reg Micra for years and it was great. I recently acquired a W reg Micra, same spec and am finding it just doesn't like accelerating and is romping through the petrol. It's not nearly as nippy as my old one. I had it serviced and had the spark plugs changed etc but no joy. Any ideas? Read more
Dear Dynamic Dave and Aprilia. I'm pretty sure it ain't the air flow meter as I had that go wrong on my last micra (in fact Aprilia you diagnosed it!) and it hasn't got the same symptoms - so I think I'm just going to take it for some tests as you recommend.
I think the car may have been sitting about for a while - it had only done 4000 miles in the last year. DOn't know if that makes a difference. Cheers for your help.
Just got the above car tested today for the first time - passed (as it should!) but the test centre told me that the waterpump appears to be leaking.
Can anybody advise if this is likely to be a big job, is it likely to be expensive, or is it something I should be able to manage myself (reasonably competent DIY mechanic!) without the need for special tools?
Thanks in anticipation. Read more
Thanks for that. Its the original antifreeze, presumably the dealer used Nissan but I'll bear that in mind.
Anyone know where I can get my MY04
Impreza WRX reupholstered in leather. I
hear some fuss about can't do it 'cos
of the side airbags fitted in seats
which sounds like pink fluffy dice to me !
I'm Manchester based and any help would
be appreciated. Read more
They are covering their botty holes.
They are saying, "If your airbag goes off, comes out of the wrong part of the seat and blows your arm off at the armpit - then tough my son because we warned you"
Its not an unreasonable position. They cant condone, or suggest or do anything that exposes them to legal comebacks.
For some reason my Passat indicators have stopped flashing when I lock the car with my fob. Not a big deal I know but I just wondered if this 'indicates' that there is something wrong with the car. They flash when I unlock it but not vice versa.
I remember that it has done this before when one of the doors was not quite closed properly but everything looks OK with the doors/boot. Read more
It was the bonnet not slammed down properly. Not a fault with the car, me not being brutal enough by letting the bonnet drop froma foot height as suggested in the manual.
Has anyone got any good info on the new Boxster Coupe? At first I heard there would be models that undercut the current base convertible, but now rumours seem to indicate that it will be "Boxster S" models only.
For me a Boxster coupe is probably the most exciting new model in years.

Hi all,
anyone know what to use to remove the green algae-type mould which appears on the very edge of older window seals? I don't want to use the wrong stuff & damage or discolour the seals.
Cheers,

Hi. I usually clean the seal down with a little soapy water and an old toothbrush, wipe with tissue then leave to dry. When dry I rub a little black shoe wax on the seal. This usually does the job
Time was when I could identify pretty well any make or model of car from any angle and reasonable distance.
Over the last twenty years or so, that ability has dropped by about 80% to the point where, one day, as a witness, I can hear myself coming out with the pathetic 'it was a red car' or something similar.

Remember those 2 guys, on TV prog 'You Bet', a few years back - they were able to identify cars which had been scrapped, crushed & baled?
Wonder if it'll be harder to do, when all these clones, reach end of their life?

Which raises the obvious question, do tablets actually work, given that they appear so mild and gentle?
