Seen on another website,
about someone asking about using a dissolved dishwasher tablet to clean the scale etc in his cooling system before putting fresh anitfreeze into the system.
Could this be a cheaper way than using the rip off products off the shelf for doing the same thing.

Only prob. I see with using this. is you need hot water to flush it away apart from its harsh. ie may cause problems??

I thought cooling systems of engines of today are suppose to get hot at approx. 80/90deg C with thermostats or am I wrong.??
Which I believe is slightly higher than a dishwasher of 50/65 degs C during a wash cycle.

No you are not wrong..just not happy with dishwasher tablet put into engine..Have heard of daft things to do but that I find a ott.If rad prob get it checked out.If found faulty replace..

If a choked radiator is the problem, then you are probably going to end up needing a new one. But you could try a drastic kill or cure solution without risking the engine and the rest of the system.
Remove the radiator, plug all the openings, pour in a strong hot solution of washing soda, and slosh it about for half an hour. Drain and flush very thoroughly with a hosepipe, and refit. It might be cleared, or it might now have a big leak that was previously blocked by all the scale.
I've done this successfully on an old-fashioned radiator, but modern ones might be too delicate.

dishwasher tablets?
Why not use a preparation like Radflush designed for the job?
I have no idea what dishwasher tablets will do but as they are designed to work with a stainless steel drum and engines and radiators are cast iron or copper or aluminium, the chances of a secondary reaction/ disaster seem high to me..
Save £3 and blow a headgasket and spend £750.. yer pays yer ....

I have advocated the use of dishwasher tablets before, I resorted to these AFTER a blown head gasket left black deposits in the cooling system. None of the proprietory treatments made an iota of difference. Before stripping the head off for replacement, I put a couple of crushed tanlets dissolved in hot water into the header tank, along with the coolant, and drove about 70 miles, and then drained with the engine hot, reffilled with hot water, drained and so on, until I was sure the water was pure enough, then refilled with coolant mixture, I then did the head a couple of days later, no ill effects, I thought seeing as aluminium pans, steel baking trays platic etc... all seems OK in the dishwasher, so would the engine. Two tablets for 16p, I spent £8 on useless bottles of soap?

This is my thoughts, although I don't have a problem as some may think I have from the above replies.
I'v had a dish washer for some years and its used everyday loaded with aluminium pans and steel baking trays, etc. But lets be honest it takes, along time, weeks or months before any signs of corrosion starting, and as with most off the shelf agents you only leave them in your system for at the most 1 hour and completly drain and reflush till clear. Which a totally different scale to a dishwasher.

Which raises the obvious question, do tablets actually work, given that they appear so mild and gentle?
