Nice idea Henry but you would also need to earth the
biscuit tin as it is made out of a conducting material,
otherwise you have an exposed conductive part, fail to comply with
the regs and present a potential indirect shock hazard.
Seriously, Im NOT joking!
Best to use a non metallic structure, wood, heavy cardboard etc.

It just seemed a very quick solution even with drilling a hole for the earth strap compared with knocking up a box.
It should also be fireproof.

I have an audi cabriolet 1.8 20v (S Reg) and each time i am going around a bend on the motorway (doing about 80 - 85 miles), i hear this vibration/juddering on the O/S wheel. Has anyone experienced this problem before? I have had the anti roll bar replaced but still no joy...Help!!

I know there are a few people in this forum who have had diesel engines chipped. As I recently started a thread on tyre selection, with regard to speed ratings, I wondered how many of the people, who have had their engines chipped, then thought it necessary to upgrade the cars tyres to deal with the increase in performance? Depends on the gearing, a lot of diesels do have relatively close ratio gearboxes but if you've a tall top gear for economy top speed will be restricted to power not revs.
With my gearing, at 4500rpm I'd be doing 145mph which just ain't going to happen.
Clutches are slightly more susceptible to increased power, VAG clutches in particular. Transmissions should take the extra 20-30% comfortable, they're usually over-engineered. However, there are notable exceptions so check out HJ's car-by-car breakdown and the car forums if you want more information.

How are the headlights adjusted on the new MkV Golf.
I heard that the current Passat has a "switch" which switches between LHD and RHD focus on the back of the headlamp unit.
Is this the case with the Golf? there isn't any prism on the Glass at the front, and the mirrored piece surrounding the bulb looks like it should move, but I cannot see how.

For MoT testing purposes it is admissable to use beam deflectors or Black Tape! strange but true!

Does anyone know the best way of dealing with folk in the motor trade who think they know what they are doing or saying when you know they are blatantly off the mark.
My own experiences are the tyre fitters who don't want to balance tyres (don't need to on the rear mate, need to let the tyres bed in), tyre fitters who want to put trolley jacks on all the wrong places and the Honda salesman showing me the "new" features on the latest model Jazz that our "old" Jazz has already.

Pete M.would say your fitters are sharper than ours..It is totally incorrect to fit a tyre without a wheel balance..no ifs no buts..I often wonder where we are going..Poss in direction no one is taught the correct way of doing things..Or are lazy?

I'd like to get a mobile phone hands-free kit for a Nokia 6610i in my 2001 VW Golf but I'm not sure which direction to go in.
Obviously DIY will be cheapest but as far as I can see from the kits they sell in high street mobile phone shops, it means a lot of wires trailing about in front of the dashboard. Apart from looking bad, I can see they could even be dangerous if you get caught up in them.
Presumably a professional install is neater, safer and better for re-sale value. But which way to go? From a (London-based) specialist installer I've been quoted £200 for Bluetooth and £175 for conventional (I assume microphone and earpiece) kit. I haven't even bothered getting a VW dealer quote as I assume it'll be very pricey.
The benefit of any experience or advice would be much appreciated.

proper kit available from nokia not that expensive go for the bluetooth as it improves the resale value if you leave it in the car, it works with any bluetooth phone not just a particular model like the nokia hard wire kits it's also a very good easy to use piece of kit .
One of the starter motor bolts on my Mondeo has rounded off. Typically it is the most akward one to get at, no room to get a mole grip on it as it is recessed and it looks a real pig to try and use a chisel to turn it without having the car on a ramp. I was wondering if those sockets with the internal pins that shape to the profile of the head were any good, some gorilla has overtightened the bolt (ahem, goes red) and it will probably need a fair bit of force to shift.

Hammering on an old spanner or socket that is too small is always a good option.
Gators work well on relatively small nuts where grip rather than torque is the issue. I am not so sure about use on larger sizes. I have heard stories that if you put real force on them, as in 3 foot scaffolding pipe extensions, they break up and all the rollers fall out.


Just follow the procedure in the Haynes manual. I'm not sure what you mean about getting the fans 'out of the bottom'; the easiest way is like I described above, remove the rad and the fans come with it. Take it from somebody who knows.....!
