I've got a 52 reg Corsa and want to fit a CD player in place of the bog standard tape player. I know I can put a vauhxall standard CD player in, but can I use another stereo (ie sony, jvc etc) to work with the display on top of the dash? Are there any specific CD players which work with this system?

If not, what happens to the display when you use another stereo?

Any advice appreciated. Read more

306XLD

Hi there,

As you may have noticed from the rather long title, I require some help with a 'few' things that have gone wrong with my 306.

1. The heater blower is not working on any setting (1,2,3,4) though hot air does come through using the car's velocity to force air in. Fuses seem ok. Actually started a month after my stereo was nicked. I'm worried that a live wire may have caused some havoc... any ideas on finding the fault?

2. I've just serviced the car on the weekend (replacing the glow plugs, oil, oil/air filter). Now the car is idling erratically. Initially when starting the car it would barely stay above 600RPM (it should be nearer 1000RPM when started from cold) and then was stalling. Tried warming the engine by driving for 10mins. then bringing it to rest and same thing; it would hover around 600RPM then stall.
The temp. fix was to increase the idling which now means that when cold it hovers around 750-800RPM but when warm is around 1000-1100RPM! Any ideas? Do I need to replace the Fuel Filter?

I have serviced my old petrol engines but not diesels. Is there something I need to reset?

3. The coolant needs topping up every 2 weeks. I'm guessing it's a pipe leak, but someone said it looks like the cap is not sealed properly. Having looked inside the radiator cap there is no seal, though i dont think there ever was (unless the mechanic has removed it for some reason). Is it possible that water is just evaporataing?

4. When revving around 2000RPM, there is a humming noise around the engine/underneath the car (the wife says its like a 'hoover' noise) thats stays for abour 2 seconds. Anyone able to define this?

Thanks for any help which you can provide! (if anyone is selling a bog standard pug stereo let me know)

Cheers

D

Hi
Glad that the problems are being sorted.
Strongly reccommend changing fuel filter regularly and thoroughly clean out the bowl. I change fuel filter, oil filter and oil at 5000m intervals max on my 205 with similar engine
Good luck

Just saw this on Slashdot - looks quite cool:

www.autoexpress.co.uk/?previews/previews_story.php...0

Quick extract:

"Called the Eliica - short for Electric Lithium-Ion battery Car - this radical 800bhp eight-wheeler from Japan is proof that electric vehicles can be fast and fun to drive, too. Boasting a four-second 0-60mph sprint and seven-second 0-100mph time, the Eliica is faster than a Porsche 911 Turbo."

Only problem is that at the moment it will cost £170,000 to produce. Read more

This one will never go into production, but it will have bought electric cars much closer to us.

Lets face it, with oil stocks dwindling.

All they need to do is get that 10 hour charging time down to something reasonable, or supply a home core reactor with it.

I suspect they will have to supply a huge capacitor to the owner so that he can simply zap the car on a daily basis before he leaves for work. The addition of cutting edge solar technology will also help IMO.

Hello all,

I've done a search and found a number of topics on this subject. However, I'm asking what your advice to me would be about the following:

I took a used Mondeo hatch (registered beginning of this year) for a test drive last Saturday late afternoon / early evening. It'd been brought up from a dry storage area below ground to rather damper conditions above, though it wasn't raining. Just cold and 'moist'.

All was well during the drive except for excessive condensation from the start on the interior of all the windows - it was so bad on the back window that I could hardly see out of it.

When we got out, we even noticed condensation 1/3 of the way up the front headlights.

I assume that this sort of thing isn't normal and could be the result of the seal around the door and headlights letting in water.

I didn't notice any damp inside the car on the seats - though I didn't run my hand over any of the carpet or look under the space saver in the boot for any water.

The dealer assured me that he'd get the the problem 'checked out' when he has the car serviced before he delivers it to me this Sunday.

Am I being overly concerned for nothing - that this level of condensation in a car after a period of storage is natural - or should there be specific things I should call the dealer about?

Your help is appreciated! Read more

Dave,

Please, and I am deadly serious, *please* don't let the emoticon menace start.

Look at other forums where they allow this and tell me it's a good idea. They breed like rabbits and eventually take over the whole forum. You start to have posts with half a dozen words and twenty emoticons. (I'm not joking - I gave up on another forum after seeing just this).

Perhaps a slightly inward looking poll subject: "Should emoticon posters be disembowelled with a blunt conrod?"

Hi all.

I wondered if people had any experiences of laser eye surgery and how, in particular, you found driving post surgery? I'm really short sighted (around -6.75) and would love to have laser surgery to dispose of the glasses for good.

I commute around 450 miles per week so would really find other people's experiences of driving post surgery a great help.

Cheers.

So anyone over about 45 who has laser treatment to correct short sight might find
that they cannot read without glasses and, more seriously, cannot read
the instruments of their car, maps, instructions, etc without having a
pair of glasses dangling on a string round their necks.

My experience was quite the opposite. I've been shortsighted since my early teens. I wore glasses until I was about 30, after which I switched to contact lenses. As I hit my 40's I had to start wearing reading glasses. At the age of 49 I decided to have LASIK performed.

The result is I now have perfect long vision AND I no longer need reading glasses. This last part was unexpected as I was warned I would need them after surgery.

Polo 1.4 TDI PD

Never had to top mine up between yearly services admitted I only do about 4000 miles a year, but no movement on the dipstick. It has been pointed out on this forum a number of times, dont buy this oil from the dealers if you can avoid it. Millers Oils sell the same specification at around £20 for 5 litres

Hi
I recently bought a 1998 Audi A4 V6. Its a US spec 2.8 30v with about 108K on it. There seems to be some noise coming from the cylinder heads, it sounds like the hydraulic lifters are clattering. Any ideas on how to approach this problem, before i consider fitting new lifters.
thanks

Castrol UK recommend:
Enginea
Viscosity options: all temperatures, 0W-30, 5W-30, 5W-40MAGNATEC 5W-30 A1

GTX is 20-50 and mineral. You will find oil takes ages to circulate on start up.
Filter may not be proper Audi one and may allow oil to drain out.

Change to proper 5-30 oil - semi syntheitic and Audi oil filter..
