November 2004
Hi backroomers,
Since you were all so helpful with my last thread, how about this one... in my quest for a used Megane II, I've read (here on HJ and elsewhere) that the early cars (2002 especially) had all kinds of problems, which have been sorted on later ones.
But does that mean that buying an early model now would necessarily be a bad idea? Is it still likely to be causing trouble, or is it more likely to be the case that the unfortunate 1st owner has shaken out the faults (either under warranty or otherwise) so that all the defective parts have been replaced by newer items?
I'd go for an earlier one (because they're a bit cheaper!) but not if the consensus is that I shouldn't touch them with a bargepole.
Thanks! Read more
I have a 1998 BMW750i, and have managed to break one of the Xenon headlights. I went to the main BMW dealer to ask for a repair cost, and was given an estimate of 10% of the cost of the car !!! Any suggestions on where I can get hold of one Xenon headlight, or views on replacing existing Xenon's with standard lights. I need a cheap solution. Advice appreciated.
Justin

Have a you tried a new one from Eurocarparts (they have a website)
They list just the lens too for £28.
Or any of the many second-hand specialists, such as BMBitz. BMW Car magazine has lots of adverts for breakers, as does Exchange and Mart.
Good luck!
I will deliberately keep this as vague as possible as the mods may get a wee bit uneasy!
All day yesterday the gritters were out on all the roads in my area. Forecast was for it to go to minus 6 last night.
When I got up at 6 am this morning it was raining but my pathway was pure ice. There was no signs of any frost but all the rain was turning to ice, very quickly.
Driving along a certain motorway I feel uncomfortable about the conditions. When I pass the huge sign at the side of the motorway and it tells me it is currently minus 4 outside, I slow down from 50 to 40.
Half a mile on, there is a car lying on its roof; another hundred yards there is one impaled in the crash barrier. And so on and so on, a total of 9 different accidents within a stretch of 2 miles. Two of these accidents involved cars that had went racing past me after I had passed the first accident.
Why, oh why, oh why, can people not use common sense? Many of these cars will have had temp displays in them, what do they think the purpose of these are? Did none of them see the minus figure and think that the road might just be slippy? Why when they had seen a car lying on its roof, did they continue to race along the road?
Do drivers now feel so safe in their cars with airbags ABS etc that they don't take basic driving precautions? I was driving a Saxo with probably zero NCAP rating and I drove carefully, but not any differently to I do in my 5* rated Scenic.
No doubt they are all now writing their letters complaining about the authorities not having gritted the road the 5 mins before they drove along it! Well they wouldn't admit that they had been driving dangerously would they?
Just had to get that off my chest!

Driving along the A70 towards Endinburgh a couple of years ago I sensed that the road was getting very frosty - I could see it glistening in the head lights - so I slowed right down. Soon saw a car in the ditch (Rav 4 I think!) so tried to stop to see if any help was needed - touched brakes and all 4 wheels locked up. Eventually got it to stop after about 200 yds, got out of car and promptly fell over. Hmm, very slippery! Amazing what grip the car tyres offered - until I wanted to stop that is! Guy in ditch was OK, said that the gritter had been going backwards and forwards every 20 mins or so for a few hours, and was not really having any effect on the road surface. Came home a different way!
Only later did I realise that I had stopped on the side of the road, and had anybody else come along and not been able to get past due to oncoming traffic and they would have shunted my car. Will bear that in mind next time.......

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....
I have bought some replacement headlight and sidelight bulbs for a Jan 2001 Legacy outback they are Philips Blue vision H7 12v 55w bulbs, and the sidelight bulbs are W5W 12v 5w bulbs. Are both of these suitable for this vehicle and is it easy to change the bulbs? Does anybody have these bulbs fitted to their car- are they any good.
Just fitted Philips W5Ws to my 1988 Mondeo.
I am very pleased with them. They are much brighter and whiter than the standard bulbs.
They do not show as blue throught the non clear lenses.
If you have clear lenses on the Outback then I think the bulbs will look blue which IIRC is not legal.
My Nephew wants to treat himself, having spent 6 years as a penniless medical student. He wants to buy a new Merc E Class diesel. He is keen on the 270Cdi, but at a pinch would get a 220Cdi. What are the chances of a good deal in the run up to Xmas?
(By the way, don't let new Doctors tell you how crap the pay and hours are! He is on £35K as a newbie. Hattie Jacques and James Robertson Justice would have a fit if they knew. And, how about this....he gets £50 a pop to sign a certificate for cremation) Read more
now Doc's don't work until they drop, I guess
he will have more time socially than he would have had
on "Doctor at Large!
That is not the experience in my household. As far as I am aware nothing has changed. The hours worked are as bad as ever.
Just do not believe the rubbish that is put out, about hours worked, by those in power. The figures are adjusted to fit!!!
In addition many new docs are applying for a new job EVERY six months. Imagine sending off CVs and attending interviews that frequently. Doctors CVs are not one page but ALL you have ever done in significant detail. Then change jobs maybe at the other end of the country within 24hours. I know when it is best not to be in hospital. It is at job change time!
Rant over.
I cannot comment on the Merc E class because I spent the money and a bit more on a medical student instead. Much better use of the money.
I've been offered a Peugeot 306 1.6 XS 98, it's a tidy example and done relatively low-mileage (52000). I know that it only has the 90bhp engine, but I wondered whether anyone knew what the revisions were to make it to a 100bhp and more economical (5mpg) in 2000? If it is just a new ECU, then I thought I could upgrade it...any thoughts? Read more
The 100bhp (actually its 98bhp and 100PS) and the 90bhp engines are identical really, it was an ECu change that increased the power. The newer engine has 2 lambda probes, post and pre catalyst. The changes were prompted by emissions regs.
Any ideas how to clean out 'fan' jets on a 2001 Passat?
They are not totally blocked yet. I admit to not using the special expensive VW washer stuff all the time.

I wasna fu but just had plenty. Read more
Not sure how similar VW washer jets are to those on a Vauxhall but I've cleaned out my partially blocked washer jets by using my son's high power water pistol. It's more like a rifle and has a pump action to pressurise the water - I'm sure you know the sort. A few well aimed squirts directly down the metal nozzle of the washer has cleaned away any blockages with no dismantling. A thumb over the end of a hose might do the same, but I would have thought a pressure washer lance would be too powerful.
Rear wiper makes terrible noise when used, not wiper blade because pulled it away from glass still made screeching noise. Does it need new motor and or arm ??????? Read more
Take the arm off and apply a few drops of oil to the spindle beforee investing in new arm (wouldn't have thought that would help anyway)or motor??
Well, the younger version of Blue is now ready to start driving, but it seems that all of my knowledge of which insurance companies are any good has totally evaporated as the cheapest quote I can get him on a 1.4 Escort is £2400.
Has anyone got any ideas of where to look for cheap younger drivers insurance, I've tried the usual suspects, Direct Line, Liverpool Victoria etc.
He needs a larger car like an Escort as he will be using it to travel from the south of the country back to the north east on a reasonably regular basis.
If anyone has any bright ideas about what other car might be useful then feel free to share them, it should be commonly available for less than £500.

Hi again,
"do you have to call them up" Does this mean you have been trying the internet? I tried the online quotes for all of the major insurance companies, but they were very inaccurate. The quotes that I got were sometimes £250 off what they would quote over the phone. Even though you supply the same information, you get a different quote over the phone, usually cheaper. How does that work?
Excellent idea suggesting an Escort then, if you work at a Ford dealer ;-)
My 1999 1.4 306 has a poor tick over, and surges up and down. When it is hot and the engine is turned off then started it will not tick over at all.Is there a simple solution to this or checks that can be carried out, or is it a case of specialist diagnostics from the dealership? Read more
Definately the stepper motor, either failing or dirty.
Common problem on TU engined 106 and 306 models.

Backroomers' opinions about good and bad technology could be an intersting new thread...
Personally I find things like rain sensitive wipers a pain in the ****. After all, how difficult is it to put your wipers on?
Whereas reversing sensors are, IMHO, a wonderful invention, since I'm pretty useless at parallel parking.
