Hi Room
If jo blow wants to lease a car without being a self employed business customer whats the best way of doing it. Thinking of a german beast on a lease across 2 years. Any one recommend a good site to review? Read more
A friend of mine placed an ad in Autotrader on Thursday to sell her Peugeot 206 cc, as she now has a company car and thinks it daft to keep paying tax, insurance etc for her own.
She has a call today from a company telling her about their service. I won't name the company as I'm not sure whether that would go against the name and shame rules.
Basically they say that for £79.99 they will match her up with people on their database who are looking for a car like the one she is selling, and in her local area. If they don't sell the car within 7 days you get a voucher for 2 nights away in the UK or channel islands, and you pay only for your food. This is all confirmed on their web site.
You apparantly get your vehicle advertised for 35 days, and if not sold after that, a further 35 days. I suppose it's better value than the £42.50 she paid for 2 weeks in a magazine though.
In the back of my mind I am sure that I have heard that such companies are rip off merchants, but am not sure where I get that from. I've searched these forums for the company name and turned up no results. A quick google revealed only one complaint, on a bikers forum.
Anyone any thoughts or experiences? Read more
Agree. Wasn't caught out myself - although annoyed that someone tried to do it and wasted my ebay listing and fee! (so much for the advertising fee being safe). Just wish this obviously rife scam (and others - I had them all at it - singapore shippers, western union scam, and professional dealers pretending to buy for daughters off screen etc etc) was more well known for protection of the more naive.
Hello
Do any BR have any experience of using the Phatnoise digital box of tricks that connects up to the car cd player so you can have many of hours of music and speech stored on one cartridge? I gather you are given special software for your computer and a special USB cradle for the cartridge. Once you have loaded all the music you want, the cartridge is loaded into the boot mounted player which is connected to the car CD player.
If you have one is it worth the money or are there better alternatives
Thanks for your help
Regards
Hugh

Possible alternative is iPod with their radio device. Probably more portable than a car-specific device. And probably as cheap.
Hi all
I've got a lot of condensation in the cabin of my VW Golf Mk2 GTI, there's a funny smell when the heater is turned on, and the coolant level is dropping. It doesn't take a genius to work out that there's something amiss with the heater matrix or associated plumbing.
However, I have heard that the mk2s were subject to recall for a presure valve to be fitted to address a weakness with the matrix. Does anyone know how to tell if this was done? I have minimal paperwork with my car, and the VW service logbook is complete for all services but doesn't mention this recall repair. Also, does anyone know if VW are likely to help out in fixing the matrix if it is shown that the modification wasn't carried out? I appreciate it's an old car, and that if the modification had been carried out the matrix might not have gone, but I wasn't aware of the problem until reading up on the internet when I first noted the problem. It occured immediately after a service (always the way, garages seem to wreck my car!), so I'm miffed that my nicely serviced car now has no heat for winter!
All advice gratefully rceived

mattie,
the cuts i sustained to my fingers trying to unclip the bottom cables have still not healed.. which is nice!
I'm now not getting uniform blowing on the windscreen, the driver end isnt getting as much air as the rest and i now have an annoying rattle from within the dash...
All in all, if i have probs with the matrix on any future car, fund allowing, i would strongly consider giving it to a garage!

Hit a deep puddle yesterday in my XC90, causing a bow wave of water over the car and clearly into the engine bay. A few seconds later the engine got sluggish and a 'Service needed' warning came up on the instrument panel.
I stopped a mile or so up the road, let the engine idle, then switched it off. The warning notice had gone, but the engine was sluggish for another mile or so until all became well again.
No problems at all today; should I be concerned? Read more
Thanks Aprilia. I stand corrected..Apologies DD

It looks like my Dad will be being employed with the same company he works for now but in Germany. There is a new car package with the job and I am trying to find out the implications for tax of choosing one over another. I assume it will be based on C02 like it is here as that must be a euro wide standard. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Read more
There are no harmonised tax laws in the EU - Gordon doesn't want it; he would lose too muchg Alcohol revenue.
Surely the company is large enough to have an in-house advisor to point your dad in the right direction?

Yes, by me in the silly thread.
Anything of interest in there?, I stay well clear.
Read this on the BBC news website this morning :

Not that familiar with this stretch of the M25 but I find it a bit odd that a broken down truck can shut both carriageways for 2 hours on a Saturday evening. Any idea what it might have been carrying?

An explosive device?
Could have be stolen and police had reason to be suspicious.
HJ,
The thread a few weeks ago was about a yet another survey.
www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?v=e&t=26...7
Quite a lot of discrepancies between the 2 surveys in your post.
For instance the Consumer Report lists the Jaguar S-Type and Jaguar X-Type at the top of the LEAST reliable listings for mid-range cars; this list also includes the Merc S, E, & C Classes and BMW 5 & 7 Series. (Although how Mercedes S Class & BMW 7 Series are listed as 'mid range' cars beats me.) In the JD Power survey Jaguar are 2nd MOST reliable, BMW 4th and Merc 10th - all with reliability above average.
The one unmistakeable trend in every kind of value, reliability & sales survey in the USA is that Japanese and Korean cars are winning and European cars are losing.
