I purchased a Ford Ranger from a Ford dealership 6 months ago. The vehicle has been back for warranty repairs on numerous occasions. There is still an outstanding problem with the clutch. They have advised that in order for the Warranty company to inspect the problem. I have to pay for the vehicle to be stripped down - approx £1000. If the fault is deemed wear and tear I have to pay the full cost to put it all back together.
I have yet to speak to the Warranty company to validate this. Can anyone offer advice as to where I stand on this. Read more

Why is the warranty relevant ? Presumably this is a defect from when you bought the car and therefore is the responsibility of the dealer. If he can recover his money from the warranty company, all well and good, but hardly your issue.

Just a comment that I find the symbols used on the results page of this week's poll somewhat judgemental. I thought I was taking part in a survey, not asking for an opinion on the speed I drive.

Apologies if the mods feel this should have been emailed, but I think it's worth a discussion.

Can I put in a vote on behalf of the police car (obviously not on a call) that I followed today who must have been exceeding 40 in the 30 limit from the speed he left me (only to catch up with the cars in front) and jumped a red light later on?

I have contacted a carburettor specialist, who has informed me that a likely culprit for the carb icing I suffer from on the Pierburg 2E2 carb in winter weather, could be the throttle body heater.Does this sound possible? If so,how do I get to the thing, and whats the best way to test it?Any help much appreciated,

Why are coaches permitted to drive at 70mph on the motorway (but banned from the third lane) whilst HGVs are restricted to 60mph (and held down to 56mph by the limiter)?

Typical Alfa driver then?

Actually, the typical Alfa driver wouldn't be seen dead in one, and the more orthodox have been seen to make gestures to ward off the evil eye when passing one.

Just read the review of the Modus in this week's Auto Express. The Modus has a "boot chute" which I will try and explain.

Its a conventional hatchback type opening boot, but within that there is a "hatch" which pulls backwords, similar to the boots in the original Minis (I am not going to get your attention putting boots and minis in same sentence!)

This way, instead of opening the full boot, you can just simply open this small hatch, throw something in and close again. Even better than renault's split tailgate in my opinion!

Are Renault leading the field with this or are they copying someone else? Read more

I would hazard a guess that the A40 (farina) Countryman version had this as standard in about 1961?

I got done for going through a red light at 19mph, in the camera infested area of Battersea, London.

Anyway I have to renew my insurance and was wandering how much I can expect my insurance premium to be increased, when I tell them of my 1st ever 3 points during 20 yrs of driving.

but they DON'T have access to your driving record>>

If, by any chance, you are referring to my posting, I meant that the police are now able to ascertain whether a vehicle is covered or not by insurance through access to the insurance companies' database.

The ABI estimates that more than one million people in the UK, equivalent to about five per cent of motorists, do not have insurance cover. Accidents involving these drivers cost more than £500 million annually, increasing insurance premiums for other drivers by six per cent or about £30.

The insurance body would like to link existing insurance information held on its database with licensing and tax data held by the DVLA.

This would identify drivers with road tax but no insurance. Many uninsured motorists fall into this category and get away with it, just as they do with displaying a tax disk yet may have no valid MOT certificate.

Just been reading news story at www.carkeys.co.uk and at another site (cant remeber address sorry).

Anyhow, the signed strategic partnership has hit snags.

Main jist of articles - Chinese firm Shanghai Automotive are determined to become mainstream and dont want to wait around forever to become a mainstream brand.

They want to take a 53% stake of rover, and re-brand it as the luxury affordable manufacturer it used to be re-nowned for.

However, mg rover uk or phoenix are not interested. I cant see why.
Firstly - they personally as share holders would get a good return from a sinking ship.
The rover brand would have a greater chance of long-term existence.
Get rid of them paying the pension deficeit.

From what i have read, and heard form a few trade sources - rover with no new models on the horizon for at least 1 year need to lose 1,000 staff.
Surely the shanghi people would keep some people on - at least for a move over period.
Plus, it makes sense for the chinese as rover are still a decent brand (especially 75).
how this would affect the cityrover tie up - i dont know.
One things for sure...
the proton deal is dead, falling sales, awful face lift (45 at least) - no sensible diesel for 25 or 45.

Its looking like a bleak winter.

dont get me wrong i love rover, my favourite car ever was a Rover 213, yet its looking sick.

without wishing to be rude, but imo anyone who buys a new Rover is confused if he/she pays more than 70% of list price. (I almost posted "off" instead of "of" - perhaps I am confused!:-)

The motoring section of the Independent today has an odd 'Car Choice' column. A chap aged 84 has asked for advice on what he believes will be the last car that he will buy. He asked about the Mazda RX8, but the columnist strongly recommended the Porsce 928. Does the 928 have enough boot space to carry the weeks shopping? Read more

Commiserations on the prospect of impending senility Gr :) However console yourself with these thoughts:

What little you get will go a lot further out there than it will here.

At last GB won't see any more of your money in the form of stealth taxes.

Best wishes BTW.

I need to find out some tech information regarding a Fiat Punto. Specifically fault codes D600 and D602 whicj I hope will point to the intermittent acceleration problem. None of the reference material I have gives these codes and I suspect my local dealer may not help much. All the Fiat Forums I have found on the 'net seem only to deal with bolt-on goodies, wheels and speakers. Can anyone guide me to a good site?
Thanks

Andrew Moorey (Tune-Up)

Thank you gentlemen. Fault on the car is that occasionally the response from the accelerator (fly-by-wire) is very sluggish, no misfire, just as if you were tickling the throttle rather than flooring it. Several sources have indicated a software fault and these codes seem to confirm it.
Reflex is a good tool but I am still learning how to drive it! Aparrently there is a function on it which expands on any given fault code, hopefully by the end of the day I shall have mastered it with the help of the guys at Caftec who supplied it.
Only slight problem on this occasion was that the vehicle/control system in question was not listed against the Fiat Punto menu but a bit of detective work found it on Marea which worked perfectly.
