This Week's Poll - speeding again - blank
Just a comment that I find the symbols used on the results page of this week's poll somewhat judgemental. I thought I was taking part in a survey, not asking for an opinion on the speed I drive.

Apologies if the mods feel this should have been emailed, but I think it's worth a discussion.

I feel the "I never break the limit" option is a little pompous. Perhaps "I try to keep to the limit" would be a little better.

I'm not troubled by the wording, but I do have to say the symbols irritate me somewhat also.

Perhaps Dave will see if his technical prowess extends to actually being able to change them. I'll ask Alan to wake him up, take the bottle off him and see what he can do.

I shall have to start a "Save The Symbol" campaign.

I rather like them, product of an artistic mind. DD is obviously a fellow admirer of the Fiat Multipla.

Might I suggest that an ideal follow up to this might be the same question for motorways. I suspect the result might be a little different.

'ere, steady on. I wouldn't go that far ;o)

Regarding the symbols chosen; it was either smiley faces (as per previous polls), or a line.

I didn't think a smiley face was appropriate for the people who voted that they speed, and a plain line is just soooo boring, so I popped across the the MS website and linked some of the MSN messenger emicons into the Alxnet software.

I thought the emicons I chose were appropriate for the answers, however if you want me to change it to a boring old line....

Those portable speed monitors you see on the side of the road, give facial expressions, (smiley if you're under, sad face if you're going faster than the posted limit, etc) so why can't the poll have them?

Right poll results,

Symbols Stay = 15
Symbols Go = 3

Honestly, I don't visit for 24 hours and I miss a poll! Oh well, my vote wouldn't have changed the result.

Agree, Truckosaurus, which is why I pressed the button for "up to 5mph over the limit", trying to be truthful.

That does not mean that I wantonly say "A little bit more won't hurt". I don't. I try, to adhere to residential area speed limits, and spend most of my time doing so, but occasionally, will marginally break one before reining myself in. I'm sure there isn't a single BRer who also hasn't done so, so the number of votes for the first option should be precisely zero according to the wording!

I've amended it to include both.

But I can't see the little pictures.

Only a total of 10 votes so far to see if the pictures stay/go. Maybe others can\'t vote? Maybe they don\'t care?

Amen to that.

My main thought on reading the poll was that the 'graduations' are a little bit too big. I suspect many people will happily keep to the speed limit plus 1 or 2 mph in a residential area, but would think as much as 5mph over is too much, likewise others may be happy to do 35/36 but would consider 40 very excessive.

Maybe better options would have been something like:
Try and keep under the limit
Try and keep within 1 or 2mph
Happy to exceed it by up to 5 mph
Willing to push things up to 40.
Don't care as long as I'm not caught.

I cannot believe that anybody would be offended by a little cartoon face...

come on guy's if the only discussion t have is about the 'moties then we are all well in front don't you think :-)

PS I reckon it should be "try to keep to the speed limit"

PPS They have completely bottled it as far as the multipla is concerned :-( I liked it cos it dared to be different!

I first thought that the icons were a bit Brunstrom-esque. But then I realised that if Brunstrom had set the poll it'd be thumbs-down for "I never speed" and a kerching-style money type icon for all other options.

And we would have needed an option:

Can I put in a vote on behalf of the police car (obviously not on a call) that I followed today who must have been exceeding 40 in the 30 limit from the speed he left me (only to catch up with the cars in front) and jumped a red light later on?
