How do you deal with an insurance company who is trying to cancel your policy because of non payment when you have in fact already paid in full? I have a limited mileage policy. It was paid in full as the company failed to set up a monthly direct debit scheme as agreed. They charged the full amount to my credit card instead of taking a deposit so I then cancelled the credit agreement, told them in writing and still they have it in their heads that I owe them money! They rung me up the week before last to apologise for the mistake and say it had all been corrected and yet today I have a recorded delivery letter saying I have not responded to their previous letters and they are threatening to cancel the policy!
Any good phrases that will have them creaking in their boots?

Next time I will keep my thoughts to myself!!
While I was squeezing the hoses on my recently acquired Renault Megane (subject of a number of recent posts!), it was clear that there was some sort of internal deposit as there was a scrunching feeling when I squeezed the pipe (not very graphic desciption I'm afraid). The hoses all look externally sound but all did the same. The reason for the squeezing was that the cooling fluid seems a little dirty & I was considering a flush, My question is, will a flush be adequate in this case, or should I be thinking about replacing the hoses< I obviously have no idea how old they are, but they do not appear to be perishing or cracking in any way. Hi Mike,
I see your problem!
One thing to check is the thermostat. If your engine is really running cool, it is possible that someone has taken the thermostat out. The consequences of engines running cool are serious in the long term, and should be avoided.
To check the thermostat, start the engine from cold. Taking care to avoid moving parts, feel the temperature of both the engine side of the thermostat housing, and the top hose. The top hose shouls stay cool until the thermostat opens when it will suddenly get hot. A more in depth check is to take the 'stat out, and heat it in an old pan, and watch the valve open.
Someone will be along in a moment saying that they always fit a new thermostat on their car every so often! ;-) Where will it end?

While on holiday in Austria this year, I was overtaken by a car with registration and nationality plates that defied my attempts to identify! The registration was three digits, hyphen, letter, hyphen, three digits - as in 123-X-456 - in black on a white background. The nationality plate (or at least I assume that's what it was - usual oval with black letters on white) had the letters "BiH" on it....anyone any ideas? I've been driving in & around Austria for the last 25 years & this is a new one on me! Read more

Hi, I'm thinking of buying a car from Cargiant, does anyone have any good/bad experiences from this dealer? Is their 114 point check thorough, would you recommend getting an AA/RAC check done on the car too or would it not be necessary? Would I need to worry about doing HPI/mileage checks on a cargiant car?
Thanks for your help,
Chris

Hiya, thier is fantastic database of info on the TDCI engine and all its gremlins. My question concerns the new 2.2 TDCI, who makes the TDCI injection system, is it Nippodenso, Siemens or Delphi.
Any replies appreciaited. Thanks. Read more
Hi, I believe the Mondeo 2.0 TDCi is a Delphi system, if so the 2.2 will be sure to be the same because it is basically the same chain cam engine. The 2.0 TDCi in the C-Max, new Focus, Volvo S40 and V40 is different, it is a joint venture with Peugeot (features a cambelt) and may therefore use a different injection system.
Regards.
Has anyone recently used a car sourcing firm. I am in the market for a audi A4 Avant 1.9TDI 130 51 reg approx 30 - 40k. Not sure if it would be economically viable to get a car sourcing firm to get this car from auction, rather than keep attending sales myself and paying the private buyers premium to the auction house? Don't you just get fed up with all this hype from insurance companies, come with us and save £100 or £150 we will save you this or that amount.I was just looking for alternative cover for next years insurance and companies came within £30 pounds of each other ,some providing free unlimited euro mainland cover and others very limited. Some of the major players who tell you that they will save you the most where in fact upto £200 dearer including the elephant and that obnoxious dog.Surely the advertising standards authority cannot allow such blatent miadvertising to go unpunished. I too get loads of these. One company accosted me at a show and insisted they could save me money. My reason for declining their eventual price was it was genuinly twice that of my existing cover.
These days I just name whichever of my fleet they would not touch with a bargepole. Full race engines keep most at bay at bay!

>>I await further developments with baited breath :-)>>
Trying to "catch" them out then....actually it's bated breath...:-)
Had a similar problem with DirectLine - paid in full (Switch card) several days before premium was due over the phone, but insisted that payment was only taken out of bank account either day before or on actual day. Better making interest for me than them.
Got a letter several days later to say direct debate mandate had been set up, plus Credit Agreement form...:-)
Took five minutes of somewhat bemused telephone conversation - followed by another letter stating the DD was set up - until I put it in writing and insisted that if any DD mandate had been created, it was to be cancelled asap and confirmed to me, also in writing. It was duly done.
