Hi
A few weeks ago I noticed a squealing noise coming from (I think) the rear of the car. I think it was brake-related as gently braking caused it to disappear. This happened a few times.
I had the car in for a service, MOT and cambelt change this week and nothing untoward was mentioned to me.
Today driving at 70mph on a stretch of motorway I heard a metallic droning noise that I thought was due to a change of road surface or a nearby vehicle. When there was less traffic I realised it was my car. The noise was quite loud although there was no loss of power. When I got off the motoway and slowed down the noise disappeared.
Any idea? Does this sound like a brake problem, a dodgy wheel-bearing or something else? How can I confirm this?
thanks in advance

You didnt say what date it is?. possible you may have dry wheel bearing. Not knowing the motor I dont know what type is fitted?. Tapered bearings can be regreased. Sealed type press fit should be replaced.Try jacking up each rear wheel and spin by hand. Usually bearing will be noisy on the spin

My 900 and the 9-5 which followed it were both very good (the only time I've ever stayed within a brand) and the two dealers involved were a cut above others I've dealt with. I hope your next car is a gem.

Need to sell the 530d. It still has one green service light illuminted, but we have decided to send it to BMW for a service so it has the full five green lights at point of sale. Last service was an inspection 2, so i presume the next is just an oil service. What i want to know is, will they stamp the book if they find, for example, the rear pads are a bit low, and i decide not to let them replace them while its in for the oil service? Read more
DD moderated this once, but I decided to do it again and removed all the conversation.
I think you've forgotten that you're in "Technical Matters".
I don't kno wif this is motoring related enough, so if it gets cut, I won't be surprised.
I had the good fortune to be given two helium balloons the other day - left over from an event at a customer. I decided to take them home for the children. As my boot was full, I put them in the car, where, naturally enough, they floated to touch the inside of the roof. I reasoned that a loose balloon cannoning into the back of my head wouldn't be a problem. I set off, at which point the weirdness started.
I accelerated out of the car park and the balloons swept forwards. I hit the brakes, and they went backwards. Round the right hand bend of roundabouts, they crushed themselves over to the right of the car and on left hand bends, they went the other way. All the way home I was fascinated by the apparent reverse inertia.
I understand the physice involved, but for entertainment value it was defnitely worth a try.
Give it a go - it'll amuse your kids in the back, particularly if they are old enough to understand inertia.

You can definitely get a strobe effect from car wheels under street lights, I've observed it several times, particularly under sodium vapour lights.
Had the laguna for 2 years. Started backfiring sometimes when ever i had been driving for a while at speed, then perhaps left it ticking over or got stuck in traffic. It would then cut out. Got mechanic to have a look, he found a connector under the air filter was not properly connected. That fixed the problem for a month, then I started up one day, ran on idle for 3 minutes then cut out.
Again mechanic tested continuty between ECU, coil, sensors etc. Replaced coil/amplifier pack, still no spark. Removed and tested the ECU, ECU was fine. He then gave up in frustration and I am now onto 2nd Auto Electrician. He had performed the same set of tests and is convinced its the coil/amplifier pack again.
Having already had someone replace it I am confused. Anyone with experience of this please reply and pass on any information. Read more
Railroad,
Not sure, I know the coil has an 'amplifier' module attached, which according to the electrician is working (tested it with some Lucas unit with a flashing led?) He has tried to bypass the other bits and just get the coil to give him some life, but nothing, not even a tingle as he puts it. I know the coil is proving to be difficult to find, so it might be the older one.
The crank sensor is brand new, and the electronic module has been removed and sent for testing. The other mechanic went through similar diagnostics, and replaced the coil and amplifier pack. The only think the new electrician said was that he might have ordered the wrong coil? I will pass on your thoughts to him and many thanks for the reply.
My tensioner has gone as there is a squealing sound after a few miles. Definitley not the fanbelt as have removed this and checked that the sound is still present.
Does the cambelt need to be removed to change the tensioner? How much would it cost to get fixed? Whats the danger of not geting it done?
Would it be simple to fix myself? I have basic to intermediate mechanical skills!
thanks Read more
Agreed Sean - I've changed two screechy tensioners on PB engined 8v Golf GTis - always change the belt - it's easy anyway!

Hi folks
If a dealer sells you s/hand car on p/x without clearing previous outstanding credit to finance company (or telling you), who owns the car? If the finance company writes to buyer after two months of purchase saying they are repoing it due to unpaid credit of previous owner, how do you keep it?
Thanks. Read more
You're probably right malteser - it's a long time ago for me too. One thing for sure, a dealer can't be an innocent purchaser.
