Hi all,
My '96 Primera 1.6GX has started making an annoying 'droning' noise from the front brakes. I have taken the car to a local garage where they replaced the front pads but this has just made the problem worse. Car went back the next day for investigation where they managed to re-create noise but could find no reason for it - so I guess I'm left to figure it out for myself.
The best way to describe the noise is like rubbing a wet finger round the top of a wine glass (only in a much lower pitch). The problem only seems to appear when the brakes are warm/hot and the steering is in a straight line or turning to the right. Turning left or placing your foot on the brake pedal, even just lightly, stops the noise.
Before the pads were changed I cleaned the brake disks with brake cleaning solvent, this appeared to reduce the noise for a while. One other, possibly coincidental, point is that I only started noticing this problem after the N/S track rod end and some of the rear brake pipes were replaced for its MOT.

Anyone got any ideas on what could be wrong??

Thanks for the replies guys just a quick update for anyone who might be interested......

Did you do this without dismantling any of the brake assemblies?

Considering buying a K reg for under a grand (65,000 miles) and running it until it quits - any advice on reliability? I've heard varying comments about build quality as well...

I have just bought a Golf GTi and gave it a good drive on the test drive and everything seemed to check out OK with a FVSH. The only thing was on the way home I put my foot down and the rev limit kicked in at 5,000 RPM (Red line about 6,100). Does anyone know why?

Cheers for any advice. Read more

Thanks for that. I will be servicing the car next week and I will make sure that I change the fuel filter. After all the plugs are changed and filters I will let you know if there is still a problem. Thanks again.

Question Thanks to Ford
cheddar

I have a two year old Mondeo Ghia X TDCi, it has not been entirely trouble free though I guess not too bad over nearly 80k miles, had a recent issue which I contacted Ford Customer Services about (Glasgow), they liased with the dealer and myself, I really felt they were on my side, I had a call earlier this week asking if all was well, even though I said that the issue is now all but resolved they said that they wanted to offer me free service, the next day I recived a letter to the same effect in the post! Must be worth around £150!

This reminds me of a recent post from "Mutley" who had an offer of a free service from Ford for his company car which he could not benefit from personally even though it was him that had been inconvenienced. It has occured to me that he should say to his employer that he has managed to negotiate a free service which will save them more than £100 therefore he wants to take his wife out for a £50-00 meal for two and claim it on expenses, I i.e. sharing the benefit.

Hi

Does anyone know how to reset the service indicator on a Rover 75. I have done the lubrication service myself however every time I start the car it keeping telling me it is overdue a service.

I have spoken to my local dealer who was less than helpful and said to bring it in and they would have to charge me for labour (cant be more than a 2 minute job surely)

Any help much appreciated Read more

Any independant workshop with a Sykes Pickavant MAP module code-reader can do it....I did one last week.

Took all of 2 minutes.

A woman who appeared in court after driving for thirty miles the wrong way up the M4 at speeds of up to 80mph told the court that she thought everyone else was on the wrong carriageway and she had to keep swerving to avoid them.

She was banned for five years.

The report did not state whether she was driving a BMW. Read more

Many years ago I was riding a 25 mile time trial where the course started on a lane near Basildon and joined the A127 where it headed in the direction of London for about ten miles before heading back again. A non local rider headed off from the start and reaching the A127 junction astonished the marshalls by turning right instead of left and heading off down the dual carraigeway in the wrong direction. Luckily it was early on a Sunday morning and traffic was considerably lighter in those days, but he got as far as the next junction about a mile down the road before the penny dropped.

He received a six month ban from competition for his error.

Oz

Hi all,
I just sold off Mrs Oz's H-reg Peugeot 205 XL to a colleague, but was surprised that I couldn't finf the current MOT certificate. Probably mis-filed. The new owner believes it is essential for him to have. However:
(1), as the car was taxed up till 28/2/05, this is clear evidence that the MOT certificate existed when the car was taxed (in 3/04).
(2) what is the law about on-demand production of an MOT certificate? (which only had to be valid at the time of taxing and in theory could expire shortly thereafter, so of what use would it be then in signifying roadworthiness, etc.?)

Equally surprisingly, the MOT garage (who should be in a position to issue a duplicate), haven't been able to find it on their records so far. And the local Vehicle Inspectorate tell me they can't issue a duplicate, because they have no records.

So, must I face the prospect of financing a new MOT test?

Here's a good tip for anyone wanting a much longer than
usual Mot. Try a Welsh testing station. The last Wesh cert.
I saw was the same width as an English one but
about 2 feet long. Printed in Welsh and English. (Some years
ago now).

Not true now. They have discovered that if you make the writing smaller they can fit it all in on an ordinary one.
Thommo

Well funds may soon be returning to the Thommo wallet and a worthy successor to the Supra may soon be needed.

I have read much abour Nissan 200SX's lately and it seems you can have an R reg high spec (touring) one of these fire breathing monsters in sheeps clothing for about 2 1/2 Archers, which seems a fair bargain.

Yes I have read the guide, although I'm not quite sure what a cxamshaft is, but does anyone have ownership tales to tell of these beasts? Read more

Ah. Silly me. As soon as i posted that message i wondered.

I think 5k should be enough for a good one. Check Ebay there are usually a few on there.
