Rover 420SDi Turbo - Peter
I have bought one of these. 62K on the clock and P reg. Any comments and points to be wary about especially the cambelt and does it have a Perkins engine?

TIA

I think the engine in these is the Rover 'L' series motor, which was a development of the Perkins Prima engine fitted to the Maestro/Montego. Generally thought to be a pretty tough unit without inherent defects. Quite long service intervals for their time (12k I think?), so may be worth changing oil and filter at 6k in the interests of longevity.

Cheers

Have had a 420Di also 'P' reg for the last 4 years.
Bought it at about 80k & now done almost 140k.
An excellent car, easilly out handles the Golf & almost as economical (50mpg).
Still on the original exhaust. The only thing needing replacement apart from a couple of glow plugs & obviously filters & brake pads has been the starter motor.
Hope you have as good service as I have had.

Actually, this unit is NOT a derivative of the Prima which was essentially an O series - the L series was all new and developed bottom up by Rover. Almost indestructable, this unit is still powering many new Rover diesels today, as well a seeing service in diesel Accords when those companies were wedded.

You will not have problems.

Good strong motors these.

Head on over to the forums at www.mg-rover.org - there's a wealth of information there, plus some very knowledgable L Series drivers....
