Points Disclosure (Insurance renewal) - leur
I got done for going through a red light at 19mph, in the camera infested area of Battersea, London.

Anyway I have to renew my insurance and was wandering how much I can expect my insurance premium to be increased, when I tell them of my 1st ever 3 points during 20 yrs of driving.

Depends on other factors, but my 3 points made no difference to a car and two bike policies.

p.s. Check your policy - they usually, but not always want to be told of points when you get them, not when you renew - they may ask why you didn't tell them.

thanks martin.

Just that I noticed it on the renewal form, and I had not disclosed it at the time 10 months ago. I usually pay my insurance in one go anually.

Well if they're gone hike the price, maybe I'll shop around.

Don't attempt, for whatever reason, to withhold information which is requested or a mandatory requirement to supply when sought by your insurance company.

It doesn't work and could invalidate your insurance if, by any chance, you have to make a claim.

The insurance companies keep a database and they are able to check out your details when necessary - it's also open to police officers via their national police computer system.

Without meaning to be the voice of doom and gloom, with it being a TS10 (traffic light offence) and not a usual SP30 or whatever I would expect it to be more important to tell them. I could be wrong though.

Sorry.

Just out of interest, what difference does it make with tregard to the speed that you were doing at the time of the offence?

Just to clarify one point. Yes insurance companies share data, but they DONT have access to your driving record.

Simon - Speed over the limit makes no difference as the codes only say 'exceed xx limit'. That is unless you're so far over you get to go to court and get extra points.

but they DON'T have access to your driving record>>

If, by any chance, you are referring to my posting, I meant that the police are now able to ascertain whether a vehicle is covered or not by insurance through access to the insurance companies' database.

The ABI estimates that more than one million people in the UK, equivalent to about five per cent of motorists, do not have insurance cover. Accidents involving these drivers cost more than £500 million annually, increasing insurance premiums for other drivers by six per cent or about £30.

The insurance body would like to link existing insurance information held on its database with licensing and tax data held by the DVLA.

This would identify drivers with road tax but no insurance. Many uninsured motorists fall into this category and get away with it, just as they do with displaying a tax disk yet may have no valid MOT certificate.
