Hello

I have just changed the Ford 2006 stereo from my sisters 95 mk3 Fiesta ghia and have used the ISO connector advised to connect the excisiting wiring loom to my pioneer and the power works but the speakers dont, is there any logical reason for this that i have overlooked? i have checked all the connections and they seem fine.

Just wondered if anyone had any experince with this problem?

Can anyone tell me what are the symptoms of a worn diff on this vehicle. I've got a whirring rubbing noise that seems to be coming from the gearbox but it doesn't happen all the time. On a drive it will go away and then return later. There is oil in the gearbox. Read more

Dragging up this ancient thread ! Dieselhead reports wear on 3rd gear synchro - a 1.4-litre 205 I owned about 10 years back used to pop out of 3rd when not under load, and another similar car I got recently does the same thing. Does this indicate worn synchro, or might it be something else?

As is customary for this time of year I was wondering if any BRs had any new advice on driving through France this year. We are heading down to Beziers via Beaune from Calais via A6,A7 & A9. Anybody got any new tips from their recent journeys (or good repeat ones from last year - when similiar questions were asked).
In particular I was wondering if there has been an increase in radar traps - or using toll times to calculate speeds etc. or Le plod picking on English motorists - maybe they won't be too happy with the Greeks this year??

Much obliged

You are a sitting duck on the Autoroute, and weekends are a popular time for the Gendarmes to catch out speeders. A common practice is to stop vehicles as they pass through the peage booths for a check on your documents etc, or the first service area after you've crossed a border. I don't subscribe to the radar detector mentality myself, but be aware that not only are they illegal in most of europe if you get caught with one in France it will most likely be rendered unuseable on the spot. In addition to all the other items you should carry when motoring abroad, in many countries you are now obliged to carry a high visibility vest to wear in the event you breakdown on the motorway. I find it helps to adopt a 'philosophical' approach to the way some of the French like to drive on the autoroute...

I thought that asbestos had not been used in brake pads for 10 or 15 years, yet Haynes manuals still warn readers against the dangers of dust inhalation. Is it still used in clutches and shoes? If not, why the warnings? Or if the replacement is also hazardous, what has been really achieved - apart from accelerated wear of discs? Read more

I hope you disposed of them appropriately at your local 'civic amenity site'!

Hello all,
I just got back from my friend's house and some little......argghh!!!.....moron has put two dents into the bonnet and carved an X shape into the boot lid on a car I have had for not even 3 weeks! Fortunately, I think the "X" will come out after repeated polishes but the dents in the bonnet have almost been gouged so the paint is scratched. Why anyone would want to do it is beyond me but I'd have given anything to catch them in the act. Can I leave my car anywhere now???

Cheers

It's not brand new but apart from a problem with the tailgate handle (which Ford apparently accept as a design fault) the car was, up until this morning, pretty much in pristine condition. I don't know if someone's seen it parked up and thought "I'll have that" or something or whether someone walked past and felt like it. Swines they are...SWINES!

"Special fast-track motorway lanes for car sharers are to be trialled to tackle congestion and pollution, the government is expected to announce."

The BBC has details of the leak (sorry, pre-announcement) at news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/3864121.stm

This 'trial' is supposed to be happening from where I usually join the motorway... can't say that I'm thrilled.

I know this may sound selfish, but I intend to use all of the lanes that I'm paying to keep maintained. It's a stupid idea, in huge countries such as Australia and America everyone using these schemes lives in the suburbs and commutes into the major towns and cities the same way, plus when they arrive there they are greeted by decent public transport for the rest of their journey.

It just doesn't work like that in the UK, especially in Surrey where people are commuting in every possible direction and the majority of commuters to Central London catch the train as there isn't any realistic alternative. You'd have to have people car sharing for part of the trip, then getting out and thumbing a lift for the rest of their journey into work because no one can take them all the way without going on a detour, which would make traffic worse anyway.

Also, how does the traffic law apply to these lanes? Undertaking would become a serious issue no matter what lane is used for the scheme. As people have said earlier, the money should be going into station carparks and park and ride schemes to ease congestion. Also I think that it's the little things that can make the biggest difference, such as restricting the use of lanes that large, slow vehicles and caravans etc. can use during the rush hour.

VW Golf mk2 driver,1989-I have been told that a possible cause for the carb icing symptoms I get in winter could be a problem with the inlet manifold heater,or throttle body heater;any advice on how to find, and check if these components are working correctly would be much appreciated;in simple terms please,Im only a novice mechanic!

AFAIK the manifold heater is only used for a few seconds at start up, not constantly. I had the same problem on an '84 Polo and it was because the ait intake was still taking cold air and not hot air from around the exhaust manifold. There was a lever on the inlet pipe to re-direct where the air came from, but the actual pipe to the exhaust manifold had gone west.

After thinking about the comment on injectors before i filld up with diesel i added a bottle of wynns injector cleaner to the tank (with morrisons city diesel) after about 400 miles the car is running better than i can ever remember - more responsive and ticking above perfect. Don't know if its the wynns, the brand of diesel or just that the fault has temporary disappeared !!!!
Think i will still get it checked by renault next week

Hi

I'm going to be travelling for the first time to Silverstone for next weeks grand prix and was wondering what peoples' experiences are when it comes to setting off times/traffic conditions.

Ideally I'd like to arrive at a time when there's not much traffic around. I don't mind arriving early(ish), say 10:00.

I'd be travelling to the circuit from the M1 going southbound and I have a parking pass for circuit parking (as opposed to Park & Ride).

Any comments or experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

For the benefit of those approaching from the east the A45 has been re routed around Northampton. After the Queen Eleanor interchange it now follows the former route of the A508 to M1/J15. The section from Queen Eleanor to J16 has been de trunked and appears to have lost its number altogether. The signage has not been consistently amended.

I went to the dealers to get some new antifreeze for the 75 as it is due for change. However, I was told that it should be "vacuum filled".
What is the BRs thoughts on this as RAVE does not mention this requirement?.
Is it essential or beneficial, or is it just a procedure used by the dealers as it makes it easier and they have the kit ?.

Thanks. Read more

Yeah, I know the 75 doesn't have a K Series Diesel coz there ain't one! I should have worded it better - it is the K series engine that is subject to vacuum filling.

It's the BMW M47R unit.
