BBC radio news just been reporting that there may be a new toll motorway between Manchester and Birmingham, an extension of the M6 toll. Nowt on the website yet, but apprently a ministerial statement is due tomorrow. Read more
Of course that assumes that the toll raod will be a successful venture, and don't end up being baled out in a few years by the taxpayers money they were supposed to not be using.
A couple of weeks ago we had the brake pads and discs changed on a 1996 Renault Clio, my partner has driven it fior the past 2-3 weeks when i got in today and there was a tremendous squeeking every time i put my foot on the brake.
It seems as if these have not been bed in, has anyone any tips? Read more
Oh - one last tip! If the pads don't slide easily along the grooves in the calipers file the 'notches' on the pads very slightly to allow them free movement.

I've worked on most bits of cars for many years, but have never tampered with airbags, or even investigated how they are actually triggered (I know an explosive device is used in the bag, but what provides the signal to detonate it?) Can someone please explain exactly what sort of sensor is used, where it's usually situated, what it looks like etc. Just curiosity you understand!
Let's face it, these bags must be pretty clever to be able to know what constitutes 'an accident', yet not go off in response to a minor bump or vibration from a poor road surface etc.
My C5 has about 6 bags as I recall - some of them 'curtain bags' for the sides. Does this mean there are sensors that respond to collision from the side as well?
Bearing in mind that you seldom hear of bags going off at the wrong time, the system must be amazingly reliable!

There is no need to be concerned about 10 year old airbags. Tests have been caried out which prove that 10-12 yr old bags are as good as new. The software will not degrade either unless exposed to some kind of EMC - but in that event your SRS light would come on.
Obviously there might be some concern if the structure of the car were seriously compromised (eg significant corrosion), but by this time the car would probably be in the scrap yard anyway.

As the golf is off road, one of my friend has give me their audi as its surplus to requirements. Approx 1 week ago, the car refused to start up. My neighbour who was passing by walking his dog, mentioned kindly "the car always sounds like its only firing on one cylinder" and suggested i should get some new plugs. I took his advice, inspected the spark plugs only to find they were coated in heavy black soot. I replaced them with new spark plugs, only to discover the engine now idles at the 2500rpm. I have checked i bought the right spark plugs, I even checked with Audi-uk to confirm the model and engine size. It has been mentioned to me the engine is running far too lean??? Any ideas. Read more
I agree with Aprilia. Is this the ABK engine? You may have two coolant sensors, one for the ECU (blue square on my Audi 80) and a white round three pin for the temperature guage. You may need to replace the blue one. Is the exhaust tail pipe sooty as this would confirm that you are running to rich?
greetings! My car has a 4sp automatic box. Earlier on this year (january) i noticed the gears began to slip in gear D, usually around the 2nd or 3rd upshift. I didnt take much notice of it. As time went on the shifting became worst, which i then resorted to using gear 3 for my travels. Gear 3 also started slipping, which i then resorted to using gear 2. Now 6/7 months down the line the car has totally given up (dont blame it). I get no response from any gear what so ever. It just feels like the engine is in neutral no matter what gear i select. I felt a bit brave over the weekend, and got under the car to check the condition of the fluid. I carried out the step by step procedures. When i removed the pan, only a "coke cans" worth of fluid came out and it was very very black. A lot of sludge had settled at the bottom of the pan and the filter (oil strainer) was absolutley filthy. Is it worth me doing a ATF/ATF filter change??? or have i left it too late? any help appreciated Read more
I really wouldn\'t bother. The gearbox is history, the brake bands etc are in the bottom of the box as sludge.

Got a Rover 416 in today with a imobilser prob. It seems both key fobs (with brand new batteries installed) wont turn off the engine imobilser. (well they do eventually but after almost 50 presses!) , i know that you can dissable the immobilisation by using the drivers door key to enter the code, but we cant find the code anywhere. Any one know where i can find this code (on web etc?) or is it dealer only Job? costing silly money ?. The problem is spoiling an other wise reasonable car. Regards .. Read more
It WILL be the plip that is faulty and NOT the reciever - they never give trouble.
But, as you are, it's a free (or very cheap) fix, so be it.

I have 406 1.9dt P reg 1996,it's covered 153,000 miles. Recently it has developed a sqeeling noise when I accelerate hard. The nose builds up, then fades as less power is drawn. At first I thought it was a slipping belt, but it wasn't. I have driven it with no auxilliary drive belt to rule out the power steering pump and alternator etc.
I am now suspecting it may be the turbo to blame. Has anyone had any similar problems or have any other ideas ?
Any help would be appreciated. Read more
That shows, always check the simple things first before going all hog into the big money jobs.
So it's the latest blast from David Begg that "beggars" belief.
Up the cost of parking so that buses seem cheaper!
How about public transport becoming better - not necessary according to Mr Begg, just price the motorist out of his car and he'll be so grateful to get in a smelly dirty bus that he won't notice it's smelly or dirty or overcrowded or not on time....
Qualication to be a Government advisor - just bash the motorist.

Really not implying anything about you Stuartli (don't know you after all!). I was just making a general point about public perceptions of PT which are:
a) too often based on little or no experience and
b) inaccurate as problems experienced at a local level are assumed to be the same nationally.
Aside from the London commuting times, I really don't have any complaints with PT and am using it more and more.
not sure if anyones noticed but a batch of kia mentors have recently been released on the market for around 5 and a half grand.
i wasnt planning on changing my car but the price is very tempting for what you get.
2 questions.
1. is the kia mentor any good? (while kia\'s generally are rough and ready, some differ significantly in build quality to others)
2. whats the depreciation like? i\'ve seen other kia\'s such as the magentis and shuma prices go for under 2 grand 3 years old!
3. whats the expected car life?
cheers. Read more
cant get a kia dealer to get hold of one for me.
been told it was a old stock model that needed to go as ordered from korea.
if any sees these cars for sale with free insurance - please post back..

Despite the obvious quality of a Skoda, SWMBO refuses to countenance the thought of actually owning one, so chances of Lada getting up our drive - nil.
