I know that many of you love Lada's (going by the Big Brother thread).
Here are some pics of the latest model:

So who's going to put their name down for one ?
|
Can't fault it on style. Skoda got their act together and made themselves a respected name, no reason anyone else shouldn't given the right investment of money and expertise.
Much as we laughed at Lada and Skoda, they're still here and BL aren't. Lesson there somewhere.

>>Can't fault it on style.
I reckon it looks much the same as rover 200.I must use my glasses. As skoda isnt skoda.cant see where they have got their act together.Maybe I`m missing something here.?

Nail on the head, steve.o
Skoda isn't Skoda.
Skoda is now a VAG badge.
Nothing more, nothing less.
Even my Czech friends admit this, and proudly so, as they know that they now make cars that will sell well on the world stage.
Lada is still Lada, and until it becomes a 'badged' part of a global player with serious dosh to invest, it will always be as we have known it.
I frequently travel to the Czech Republic, as you might have guessed, and have ridden in many a recently built Lada taxi. The fit, finish, and design are truly hideous in all respects.
|
Looks ok.
Im strangely comforted by the fact that the middle picture seems to show some dubious door alignment.
|
Rather poor wheelarch alignment too, look at the gap behind the front wheel compared to that in front of it.
The c/d pillar arrangement is truly ugly also.
|
I may have said this before....................When I had a Lada Franchise, the then M.D. of the importers (he drove a Jag.) famously remarked "Ladas are for making money, not driving" Yet - I always drove a Lada, mostly from the Riva range and apart from the heavy steering they were not a bad car at all! When Proton came along - almost a joint franchise requirement then - I must admit my personal demo was from Malaysia and not Russia! Ladas outsold Protons by a big margin though as the target market for Proton was set too high. Folks who had the money for a new Proton preferred a two year old Escort!

anybody else think it looks like the old fiesta?
also, anyone know how much they go for?
dash board seems impressive.

also, anyone know how much they go for?
about six months, if the old ones were anything to go by!

Erm... that's a bit strange. Don't want people to think I've just sworn for no apparent reason, I was doing a Basil Brush impression to congratulate NW on a delightful deliberate misunderstanding.
|
I was doing a Basil Brush impression....
Which, I believe is also some kind of swearword or racist remark in Growler country. Hence why it's in the swear filter.
DD.
|
Well, you learn something new every day. Sorry about that.
I assumed one of the mods just had an irrational (or possibly not) hatred of Basil Brush :D
|
That post leaves me lost DD. Basil Brush? Explain please.
I have seen the Lada Riva in all manner of very Turd World environments, performing solid day to day transport, and being easily fixable by Ahmed Shah Motors in Peshawar or wherever with basic equipment. Don't knock it.
As for the new ones, as they say in Oz, give it a go.
Design-wise it might not turn many heads but it may just appeal to a market which a few years ago didn't have a hope of living its dream of owning a car. All you chaps have it a bit too easy in the developed world.
They used to laugh at Skodas, I don't think that's the case any more.
|
Growler,
I believe HJ added \"boom boom\" (Basil Brush\'s catchphrase)to the swear filter. I can\'t remember the exact reason why, but *thought* it had some connection with the Philippine\'s, or similar.
Perhaps HJ could clarify?

Curious design externally, but the interior looks good; a bit like a fancy Focus.
--
Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
|
Agreed. I must say the interior looks really quite nice. Nice touch with the gear shift. Of course, I'm sure it will fall to bits as soon as look at you.

I've just been looking hard at the dashboard again. Its almost a dead ringer for a Focus and just look at the steering wheel... if that isn't off a Ford I don't know what is.
If it wasn't for the yacht logo i'd say this was a small Ford designed either for the US market or for a third world market - just like Fiat do in Brazil.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?

Do you really think it looks that much like a Focus Espada? I must say - the steering wheel is almost identical but other than that I'm struggling to see other similarities...
Cheers

Adam,
Just look at the dials, and their arrangement - definately Ford. Also, the switches to the left of the wheel next to the door and the satellite controls on the wheel itself - surely off a Focus and Mondeo?
I reckon the central console is a Mondeo rearranged, but with the real gubbins behind identical.

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?
|
Hang on...........Its not a copy of the Mondeo, the interior is a copy of the Mark 3 and Mark 4 Astra (well a mix).
I knew i'd seen it somewhere before, but I've driven so many different cars over the years.
--
Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?

Yeah I see your point E. The centre does look a little like a Mondeo - especially the clock (even though it;s square) and I'm sure you're right about the centre console although it is a nice change from the usual unhappy Soviet worker cars that used to be churned out. Incidently I won't be getting one and dont' know of anyone that would. Not because it's a crap car but simply because of the badge. I know someone who has a Skoda but when asked what he drives simply sais "Volkswagen"...I suppose he's right in a way but it's just badge snobbery. Mind you, I can't talk - I drive a Ford!
ButI conceed - you are right - it does look like a Ford.
Cheers

You capitulated too soon!!!

Actually, its not Astra or Mondeo, but plain mongrel.........
--
Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive?

lol - NO NO NO. I'm not going to capitulate now. I will agree with you (originally) on the centre console, heaters aside; the clock part and where it reaches over to the passenger side. The dials also look a little similar along with the light controls but the actual lower part of the console doesn't really look like anything I've seen. What would get on my nerves though is that centre "bubble" - I think it would be distracting. I've never driven an Astra but if it's anything like the intereior of the Vectra...then....enough said. The problem we're going to have is sooner or later all dashes are going to look the same.
At least it's different. Incidently, would anyone back me up in thinking the side profile looks a little like a squashed Crown Victoria?
Or is it just me...
Thanks

There is absolutely no badge snobbery in Spain and ALL major manufacturers are represented here. I drive a Skoda Fabia tdi, and the fact that it has a "Flying Phallus" badge worries me not a bit - I know how good the car is! Yet in the UK more than one sale of a new Lada was lost to me because the punter's CHILD refused to be driven to school in one! Talk about "child power"! One realises that many parents have no control over their offspring. If this were not a motoring forum I would relate one particular piece of evidence but it properly belongs in a "How not to bring up your brat" forum , so I won't!

Sorry Roger,
what I said sounded a bit harsh. I should have perhaps distinguished Skoda from Lada which it deserves and also said that my friend's Skoda is very impressive. I'm not well up on Skodas but it's a sporty thing with something like VRS or RS or something like that. It's a nice car, he loves it and has said he'll have one again. I'll never buy one myself not because they are awful; no doubt they are more solidly built and reliable than the Fords I will continue to buy.
Sorry for sounding a little...ignorant and...snobbish I suppose
Thanks
Adam

Looks a typical cr@ppy lada, no tyle etc. People would rather spend their money on a quality second hand car which you could get for the same money as a new lada.
|
The question is, will Lada begin exporting again soon, or is this just for the domestic market?
BTW some of you may know that I owned a Lada Riva 1500 saloon for about 7 months. It weighed a ton and drove like a dog but it had an amaizing towing capacity for a car of its size. I successfully towed a twin axle trailer with a gross weight of over 1.5 tonnes without any problems.

Despite the obvious quality of a Skoda, SWMBO refuses to countenance the thought of actually owning one, so chances of Lada getting up our drive - nil.
