July 2004
SMMT sales figures for June have been released, Rover sales are -42% and MG Sales are -19%.
Hyundai Group (Hyundai/Kia) sold more cars last month than MG-Rover. Kia has also overtaken the Hyundai brand for sales in the UK. Read more
I often see comments here like "there are more cars on the road than there used to be". I was sufficiently interested to prod about, and found this:
www.dft.gov.uk/stellent/groups/dft_transstats/docu...f
Sorry if it's been posted before - didn't find it in a search.
I'm absolutely not any kind of statistician but a casual glance at the figures SEEM to show that there are not in fact, over the 90s, really many more cars at all. But there are some interesting numbers in there for any stats fans. Read more
What may have changed is the hours/day that those cars are on the
road, as drivers travel ever further to jobs or on business.
Those stats do show a steady growth in mileage per car, with journeys getting longer.
Quite agree with your point about teleworking. Cutting out unnecessary meetings etc doesn't just save miles, it reduces stress and improves productivity.
hi ive got a 1.8 ls vectra ecotec 5sp manual
when you accelerate it lower revs its really juddery, changed plugs and run it on expensive petrol as well. last night i noticed a pipe which runs from the top left hand side of the engine and joins the big pipe which runs from air filter to the inlet. it has torn almost half way around, what does this air pipe do, and could it be the reason its running so juddery.

Hi,
If that doesn't win me the strangest title prize nothing will.
We are about to go to France, driving down to the Dordogne over two days. Our 8 year old will be in his booster seat (standard Britax model) in the back. In the past we've put it on a car rug so we can just shake out all the bits at the end of the journey.
Is this safe? We've been discussing long journeys and in-car entertainment/games/books at work and someone said that you shouldn't put anything on the seats.
The car is a MB C-Class Sports Coupe and the leather back seats are slighty sloping.
If we can't do this any suggestions about protecting the leather?
thanks,
Simon

We used a thick towel under the baby seats (with metal frame) for both our children as the force the "experts" tell you to use to push down on the baby seat to securely position it as you lock it with the belts could easily mark the upholstery over time - particularly cloth seats with a pile. The need to protect the seat material from food etc was a secondary consideration. The towels stayed in place under the booster seats that subsequently replaced the baby seats. They are both teenagers now which brings a different set of problems!
Does anybody know how to re-program the key remote for a 01 Y Leon 1.4S? The battery ran out and ive replaced it, but the remote has obviously reset itself!
Thanks guys! Read more
Have you looked in the manual?
I've just bought this car as a project. It is still a good runner but the bodywork is a mess.
the oil pressure is running a little low, unsuprising after 120k and 30 years of wear. I have no idea what oil is in at the mo but its good and black and probs needs changing.
what oil would you guys recommend for a moderate miles 30 year old 911 engine
FYI I'm getting about 22psi at 2200 when I should be getting about 30-35ish
thanks Read more
I stand corrected!
When the car was new, Porsche recommended single-grade oils for these cars, SAE 30 for the summer and either SAE 20 or SAE 20W-20 in the winter for temperatures from +5F to 32F (-15C to 0C), of SAE 10 for constant temperatures below +5F (+15C). Normally, I recommend that you follow the suggestions in the owners manuals, but a lot has changed in the past twenty or so years.
Porsche revised its oil recommendations for these early cars about ten years ago to a multi-grade oil. The engines in these older cars were built for use with motor oils which were available at the time these cars were built. Because these earlier oils were thicker than what is usually available today, the engines internal clearances were greater than the more modern engines built since the mid seventies. Porsche also recommends not using synthetic oils in these early engines because of different types of seal and gasket materials used in them.
The cars affected by these updated recommendations are: the Type 356 (all 356, 356A, 356B, and 356C). Type 912, Type 914-4 and 916-6 (and the 916), Type 901, and Type 911 through 2.4-liter models built in 1973. The new recommendations are:
For Summer or warm climates:
SAE20W-50
SAE20W-40
SAE40
For Winter use and in cold climates:
SAE 15W-40
SAE 10W-30

Our VW Beetle came with the stubby screw in radio aerial, mounted at the rear of the roof, just before the tailgate. Some light fingered individual nicked it the other night, thereby making Radio 2 rather crackly! VW quoted c. £18 inc. VAT for a replacement! On looking at a new Renault Clio and Megane, I noticed that the aerial on these vehicles looked very similar. The local Renault agent supplied the part for £7 inc. VAT and it's identical to the Vee Dub item!! Radio 2 now sounds as good as ever (!) and I've saved £11.

I presume you mean the telescopic type mounted on the edge of the front wing - not the bee-sting variety?
Some years ago it was the "fashion" for vandels to snap these off and for owners to often use a wire coathanger as a replacement; then gradually the annoying vandalism died the death.
I owned a Jetta from 1995-2003 with such an aerial mounted on the nearside front wing that was never interfered with, even though it was always erected to its maximum height.
Hi,
I have a 2001 Toyota Avensis 1.8VVTi manual hatch. I've begun to notice that during and just after hard acceleration (e.g. up to 60 in 2nd, full throttle) there's sometimes a faint smell of oil from the air vents. The car's done 36K miles and I'm pretty sure it didn't used to do this.
Oil usage is minimal, water usage zero and it's never needed anything topping up between services. I'm not in the habit of thrashing the thing! Have looked into the oil filler cap and all looks nice and clean.
So, is this normal or it it something I should be worrying about? Warranty expires in November...
Thanks.

Yes, well, it was only a matter of time. The first devil's invention to arrive in our glorious Republik has been installed at the end of a tunnel on the main thoroughfare which transects the vast city of Manila. Today I get a letter saying I was doing 65 kph in a 50 kph zone, along with a photo and a demand for P5,000 in 10 days or my car will be impounded.
Given the bureaucracy and inefficiency here that's probably an empty threat, and there is always a "way out", none the less I am thinking thin ends and wedges.
Darn it, the free-est place in SE Asia as well (as was).

LOL, the Mexican story pretty much sums it up. The old guy goes out with a bucket early a.m. and comes back with it full of crabs and or shrimps straight out of the sea and puts them on a charcoal grill , boils up some rice -- that's lunch -- then he tinkers with the old jeep that has sat on breeze blocks since 197? (motoring link) -- then we get out the 50 pence bottle of rum, Growlette has brought some ice (best avoided, Philippine ice is to toilet paper what Mexican food is) and he shares all his stories of the Japanese occupation of the Phils in WW2.
Like many older Filipinos his English is perfect, such a shame the country let that one fade.
Last time we went I took him some universal radiator hose and some clamps (motoring link) for the jeep. He says he's been too busy to use them..........I don't suppose this has anything to do with the large number of empty rum bottles stashed outside.....

Maybe it would be better if Phoenix Venture Holdings were to be made to drop the names it uses for the vehicles it sells, to start out with a completely fresh identity and see whether it can really hack it in a fiercely competitive market.
Let's face it, these cars may be many things, good or bad, but they are NOT Rovers or MGs. Rovers were made at Solihull, MGs at Abingdon - end of story.
The venture capital company that now produces cars at the old Austin plant at Longbridge and in conjunction with what is fast becoming a ragbag of Far Eastern businesses should be made to stop using the names of famous former British makes in what is no more than a cynical marketing exercise aimed at lame-brained potential buyers.
A few years ago one guy I worked with told me he had picked a 'Rover' 400 as his company car because it was made by BMW and the closest he would ever get to owning a BMW! Can you credit that someone could be so deluded? Being, at that time, a real Rover (P6 Three Thousand Five) owner, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
No, call them b-st-rdised BMWs, b-str-dised Hondas, Tatas or Shanghais or whatever from now on and let's see how the market reacts when potential buyers have to face the truth!
BTW, Honda seems to be able to supply, without drama, parts for the cars it made in conjunction with 'Rover', so where's 'Rover's' problem?
