Hi all

Friend has a strange problem.

Using the ventilation controls you get a exhaust smell coming through only when stationery or moving very slowly. This happens regardless of being in traffice or with not.
It goes away when moving at more than 5 miles mph.

I\'m thinking there must be a slight leak in the engine but can\'t find one.

Any ideas?

Oh yes doesn\'t occur if you choose to re-circulate the air. Read more

Possibly exhaust manifold gasket is leaking and ventelation system drawing escaped gases into interior.

Happened to me on a Scorpio i used to own.

I am V excited!

thanks for your reply!

On my 1995 1.8 Golf, I have been having problems recently with the autobox. Whilst driving along at a constant speed, the autobox will, out of the blue, change down. This is worrying considering the following traffic nearly runs straight into the back of you!

Had it on the computer diagnostic, and it said speed sensor and multifunction switch. Changed them, and nearly 80 quid later, I've still got the problem!
The fault is intermittent, and the car has only done 40k, so I'm confused as what to do next!

Any help and advice greatly appreciated?!

Thanks

Hi
Loooked in the expansion tank the other day, only to see a mess of rusty dark water. The coolant has never been changed, and I am going to change it.
The question I have is, should I use a bottle of these cooling system flushes, or are they a waste of time? I can just as easily put a hose in the radiator etc and flush it that way.

Also how do you get the rest of the flushing chemicals out of the system form behind the thermostat without removing it.
I am worried that this stuff may cause more damage then good!

Also does anybody refil their cooling systems with distilled water?

Thanks for all your help.

Does anyone know if the EGR valve is not working properly - will it use loads more petrol - I have worked it out that the car is only doing 22mpg - so if you have any bright ideas please let me know

Cheers

Agree 22 mpg is poor unless it includes alot of urban driving and cold starts. More likely a problem with lambda sensor, split or cracked vacuum pipe, to map sensor, air leaks pre catalyst etc.
In theory EGR generally has a very small beneficial effect on fuel consumption unless too much gas is re-circulated and is causing the engine to missfire and run roughly.

Recirculating exhaust gas displaces air, reduces power output and causes unstable running so the it isn't used at very low engine speeds and I think maximum power. Would expect mostly loss of performance not increased fuel consumption if the valve had failed.

The Vauxhall EGR valve has a position indicator that should log a fault code if the valve is stuck in the open position although probably not if the valve had just got 'sluggish'

The air con. on my Rover 400 diesel works for about 10 mins then stops. The fan works fine, it's that the air is no longer cold. This has got progressively worse over the last few months. Read more

Sounds to me as it needs a re-gas, I just did my 400 petrol 3 weeks ago and its working great now.

My son ( 19) has an 88 Polo 1.3 sport with a Peirsburg 2E carb. H e called me out to the car last night because it has started to drink fuel. A quick look down the throttle body reveal that an insert or even a jet has come loose from within one of the support legs for the primary ventura and is now jammed across the aperture. The question is how do you get this back in and is it bonded or just a press fit. Regards Peter Read more

Here we go again. There is nothing fundamentally wrong with Pierburgs. What they are is difficult to set up correctly as I found out to my cost. But if you can find a good mechanic they work fine.
I would not recommend fitting a Weber. This is based on my experience of a Golf and a Polo. In both cases the cars ran worse with the Weber and in the case of the Polo I actually went back to the Pierburg.
Also if you switch to a Weber (or any other carb) you MUST inform your insurance since it will be classifed as a modification. Again I have been down this route and got into immense arguments with the insurance because they wanted written evidence that the car's meagre 55hp was not going to be increased. But without fitting the thing and taking it to a rolling road it would be impossible to tell.
My advice would be to keep the Pierburg and get a good mechanic to tune it up.

it.

We are thinking about changing my Wife's '95 Punto for something that will accomodate our growing family (2 kids - 3&5) and be used as the main family transport. Currently my Omega is used for this purpose and the punto only does the local nursery/shopping trips etc. The plan is to get Mrs.R something "all-purpose" and that then leaves me free to change the Omega....but I'll leave that discussion for another time and another post.

Mrs R, no matter how competent she maybe (and she is), isn't the most confident of drivers; She doesn't like driving big cars - anything with a footprint the size of a MKII Mondeo is big in her book and hence she doesn't drive the Omega. Being quite petite - 5'2, size 10, seat height, steering reach/rake adjustment and good visibilty are all very important to her and she's especially keen on a high seating position.

With our intended budget of upto £7K (ideally like to spend only 5-6K) VFM is a big priority - the current short-list contains a (3'ish yr old) Scenic or Picasso. The Picasso is marginally ahead mainly due to the better reviews it gets - in general there seem to be a lot more problems with the Scenic (apologies, RF ;-)) than the Picasso. Also the Citroen seems to have more interior/luggage space. We'd probably look at a 2.0HDi or 1.8 petrol, though with our annual mileage at around 12K it probably won't make much difference to fuel costs.

I'd appreciate BR's comments on the choices and particularly the following;

* Any experiences of Picassos (badge snobbery, first impressions and image aside - see "Citroen Picasso" thread) or Scenics.
* Getting an Auction Buyer to purchase the Picasso/Scenic, as I may sell the Punto privately and go down this route.
* Purchasing a brand new Picasso from drivethedeal or similar (2.0/1.6HDi Desire/SX for around £11K) - what would it be worth in 2yrs? If the residuals are good, then that may also be an option.

Thanks in advance.

What I would suggest is that you make sure that you have a good long test drive in it, minimum of half an hour and include parking etc in it.
I have had one of every of the Scenic models and my wife finds the driving position in the brand new one the best. She previously struggled with the position of the gearstick and the handbrake was a "complete shift your body move" to reach.
However, as a car, can't find any faults with it, have 2 kids like yourselves and they love it.
Its the practicalities that you learn to appreciate most, like the room the kids have on long journeys for all their stuff, the flexibility of the seats etc etc . The list goes on.
As to how it compares to its rivals, I am not sure. If you are talking say £5k - £6k, then you are probably talking out of dealer warranty so check if you have a local garage who specialises in either brand etc.
As I say, I would definitely recommend the Scenic.
