Hi,
This is my first post on this forum, so firstly, hello!
Now getting to the point...
I have circa £12k to spend on a new (to me) car, and I require it to fulfill the following:
- seat 5 adults (all with 3 point belts) and have a good sized boot for their luggage
- ~50 mpg (so a turbo diesel is a must)
- accept a towbar
- accept a roof rack
- climate control
- cruise control
- 03 reg or newer
- reasonably brisk performance (0-62 100mph if required)
- have reasonably taut and well weighted handling to provide an element of entertainment (no mpvs or van derived cars).
- a well supported service/parts network
- image isn't too much of a concern - rep-mobiles not a problem
- RWD would be preferable (handling), but I accept this is most probably out of the question.
So what would you suggest?? All suggestions are very welcome!
Cheers,
ARUU

My sister married a VERY rich man and now lives in the leafy streets of Kensington. Occasionally the pleb relatives are allowed to visit and this afternoon was just such an event. A barbeque was held in the vast garden with a professional chef hired to cook (I kid you not).
Anyhow the equally posh neighbours came round and the matter of what is THE 4X4 to have was discussed. And guess what the result was? Guess what is currently the ultimate Chelsea (and Kensington) tractor to own?
The result may surprise you, it is the VW Toureg. The BMW X5 being by popiular vote, deader than disco.
My sister (naturally) owns a Toureg in case you wondered but it did indeed seem to be the vote winner and no less than 4 persons at the do had one on order.
Make of that what you will... Read more
In the circumstances I thing that I must agree with Renault Family.
Taken from the autobahn post below regarding rules in Germany-
"If you make a rude hand gesture or similar to another driver, he can, and will, drive to the nearest police station and pass on your reg. nr. You will probably be charged and fined with "Fahrerbeleidigung" (Insulting a driver). The fine isn't much, but this actually happened to a friend of mine!"
Is there anything similiar in the U.K?
Wonder how much extra money can be made in this way by the exchequer? Probably we could even get a part of our road tax refunded simply because the amounts involved would be massive!!

Without an independant witness also willing to give up his time
and visit the police station to make a statement and fill
in endless forms I would think it would be almost impossible
to make that one stick.
Unless of course, it becomes one of those pc crimes where
the mere fact someone complains means a prolonged investigation no matter
how ridiculous the evidence.

Unfortunately in German law the accuser is given more legal weight than the accused

My nephew has called me today to say that he broke down whilst traveling at about 30 mph. The RAC have towed him home and diagnosed it as a snapped cambelt and the car is probably scrap.
He has only had the car for around six months and is heartbroken. What is the likely prognosis? Read more
He's just rang me.
Snapped belt only - cost £65 to fix at local garage so I have a very relieved nephew at the moment.
Ta all.
Does anyone know how to tell if the new vectra has metallised (solar reflect) windscreen?

According to the Vauxhall website:- tinyurl.com/6ag9n
"Dark-tinted Solar Protect® glass (excluding windscreen and front door windows) - estate models only" is standard on the SRi models, but is an optional extra on all other models.
Small but irritating problem on a Mk 1V Golf.
Lock the doors from outside with a key - all 5 lock perfectly. Do it with
the button inside the car, and the front passenger door (only) bounces open
again. You have to hit the button on the 'rebound' with perfect timing to
get all doors to lock.
I can't figure out why this happens, so I don't know how to stop it.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Thanx for your reply. When i try to open from passenger door it will lock / unlock but will not activate the central locking, hence the other doors remain locked / unlocked.
Thanx

My wife has recently bought a used Focus 'Chic' (12,000 miles)which was a special edition - as far as I can make out, a Zetec 1.6 with lots of extras. It's a splendid car in every respect though it does seem a bit noisier than we expected. I don't think it's down to the engine, the engine seems very smooth, but suspect it could be tyre noise. It is fitted with Pirelli P6000s on alloy wheels.
Does anyone have an opinion on tyre noise - do different makes/specs vary in their propensity to be noisy, and is the Focus particularly sensitive? A friend was saying that his latest Focus seemed noiser than an earlier one. Read more
When the friend mentioned in the first post gets back from holiday, I'll collar him and find out if the tyres differed on his 2 Foci. I'll let you know. It might just be that Ford have got meaner with their soundproofing!
I just bought a new car, nothing amazing just a P reg Escort, but the body if in good shape and i'd like to keep it that way for the next few years.
There are small sections of rust appearing, hardly noticable, under the wheel arches and on the boot, you really have to look to see them, what should i do , sand the rust down and paint over it?
Should i get the underside of the car waxed to prevent any rust?
Are there any other thing i can do with this car?
thanks. Read more
OK thanks,
Is it worth putting a can of millars diesel cleaner in?

does anybody know if wheels from a Mercedes E300 will fit a C180? Read more

Rover 75 CDTi. The 50mpg is possible. Qualifies for everything else, there's a few 2-yo pre-facelifts around for £12K.
