April 2004
It's that time of the year again and I have been wasting time trawling around the websites & call centres, trying to save on the motor insurance which has gone up by £25 this year.
As usual, I found some at a similar price, a few at +£40, and one at £20pa cheaper. I am far from wealthy, but it all seems too much trouble to go elsewhere for the sake of twenty quid (I'd do it for twice that).

Hi,
I\'ve just found the perfect Focus (2003.5 Zetec Estate) for us today - only one snag - only a drivers side Airbag.
The dealer confirmed that it had the \"delete passenger side airbag\" option fitted - and then told me it was impossible to have one retro fitted.
Question is - is that really true? Surely its a matter of fitting the bag/cover and replacing the sensor unit in the centre console with one for 2 bags rather than one.
Comments much appreciated as its the only thing thats putting us off buying the car as safety is important to us.
In anticipation.

Hi
If you really want to add this to a Focus, Have a look on Ebay
New airbags & control moduals are often for sale on here, Just check the parts numbers are the same as the ones Fords quoted for this particular Focus.
I was interested to read HJ's comment on the Toyota Soluna:-
"So, a great little car. Certainly the best small automatic I have ever driven. But sadly a car we are unlikely to see in the UK. Small four door autos just don't sell big-time in the UK,"
My wife, daughter and daughter-in-law all drive small automatics(Yaris, Polo & Civic) even though they have full licences. They are not motoring enthusiasts and the appeal to them is simply the ease of driving. They are usually driven in 'shopping trolley mode' so the slight penalty in performance & economy is not a problem.
I suspect there would be a much greater demand for small automatics if manufacturers didn't artificially inflate the price of an automatic gearbox in the UK and often make it only an option on the higher spec models in the range.
On the Soluna in Thailand an automatic is a £500 option on all models. In UK it is often in excess of £1,000 on small cars.

Hi Guys,
Have a problem that\'s been bothering me for some time. Sometimes the revs just drop when I\'m driving and the car starts labouring and then starts to judder.
If I switch the overdrive off, then the situation improves for a little while but it\'s no fix. It\'s gotten acute enough now that on hill starts sometimes I have to choose 2nd gear to get anywhere.
This has happened (the juddering) even in Neutral, sorted by a few presses on the pedal.
Any advise would be most welcome. Thanks all in advance!
Regards

Well, perhaps not, but it made me wonder how many speed offenders cough up when in fact they were innocent and the kit was faulty, but less obviously so than this one.
No doubt this'll get moved to the speeding thread later, but I wanted it to stand on it's own feet at least for a while. Read more
No doubt this'll get moved to the speeding thread later....
Er, it did earlier actually, when I moved RF's post on the same subject there ;o)

My Fiesta was stolen when toerags broke intpo my house and stole the keys. ( see www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=21323 for details)
I have had a cheque from the ins. co. but I\'ve not cashed it as I\'m disputing the amount, the letter saying so is signed but is sitting on my office desk. Just had a call from the cops to say the car has been recovered, apparently with no damage. Who is the legal owner of the car right now?
I don\'t want it back, providing I can get the proper settlement as I was about to sell it anyway.

I've decided to make the claim after speaking to Tesco (who couldn't have been more helpful) they pointed out that recovering the car had already cost £170+vat plus 5x£12/day storage, plus cost of new locks, plus cost of minor repairs to known damage taken together was more than the damage to my NCB, never mind the cost of any hidden damage in the 4 weeks it's been gone.
They invited me to send print outs from Auto Trader of similar cars at £400 more than they have offered me so any movement in that direction and I am gaining.
Thanks for your replies
My son has recently bought a mondeo 2.0 Zetec - 1999.
Failed it's mot and wish bones replaced and steering off centre, but tracking ok and the steering was on centre before.
Last few days, when you turn the key to the second position when the dash lights come on, you get a loudish humm.
since yesterday, there is a kind of road noise but it is not, sounds as though it's coming from the fron. The exhaust is ok.
All help appreciated. Thanks. Read more

Apart from checking the connections to the unit are sound there isn't a whole lot you can do to test the unit I'm afraid. The ECU has a self diagnosis function which will flag up any faults and are readable by a suitable code reader or scan tool (£££'s)
Reading and observing live engine data is also possible - the boost pressure sensor (using it's more generic name) is one of these.
Have you noticed a loss in performance, I take it?

Halfords are selling 5l 5W40 fully synthetic oil for £29.99.
"Buy 1 get 1 free" so that looks like a GOOD deal.
Easter offer. Obviously while stocks last. I guess it is worth a call before a trek.

I find Comma semi synthetic at around £13 for 5 litres perfectly acceptable..

Does anyone know if the 2002 megane fidji (not the new shape), or any megane of that year has a passenger airbag deactivation switch? My friends have a baby and need to switch the airbag off. Renault dealer claims there is no airbag there which is wrong as even the bottom of the range has passenger airbags. PLEASE HELP . Thanks Read more
Where there is no approved disabling feature fitted, or a manufacturer approved procedure, dealers WILL NOT disble passenger airbags - ever. This is due to possible future liability in the event of an accident.
Anyway kids of any age go in the back.
Last year, moving from direct line to esure (via t'internet) reduced my premium by a stonking £225 - from just over £525 to just under £300.
I doubt esure will be so cheap come renewal, but I hope I am wrong!!
No claims made in last 3 years.
Disclaimer - no connection with esure, just a satisfied customer.
Their adverts suck though. Hello mum I'm on the telly. Aaaaaaaaarrrrrrggggghhhhh !
