Question sat nav
how

hi all

I'm going to buy a pioneer avic x1 sat nav from Italy from a person in Milano. What the best way to test the system?

Do you connect it to a 12v car battery?
What other things should I look out for? Read more

First step is to get the hardware manual in english

www.pioneer.co.uk/uk/support_manuals.jsp?category=...s

You will need to power the system, and connect a sat nav aerial
at the very least you should be shown where you are on a map.

CARE the map that comes with the system may not have the required street level detail of the UK.

These things require careful install, you need to make sure the sat nav aerial gets a good view of the sky. There will be signal cables for speedo pulse, and maybe a reversing switch.

In this thread you may ask any question for which you need help, advice, suggestions or whatever.

It does not need to be motoring related. In fact, in this thread it should not be.

No Questions About PC\'s. They now go in another Thread.
No politics
No Speeding, speed cameras, traffic calming
No arguments or slanging matches
Nothing which I think is not following the spirit of the thread
Nothing that risks the future of this site (please see the small print for details www.honestjohn.co.uk/credits/index.htm )

Any of the above will be deleted. If the thread becomes difficult to maintain it will simply be removed.

However, as has been said a couple of times, there is a wealth of knowledge in here, much of which is not motoring related, but most of which is useful.

This is Volume 39. Previous Volumes will not be deleted,

I think planning will be ok as 5 years has elapsed. Where we may have the problem is the building regs as there are no drawings etc. for the porch.

Following advice from Mark I will get an architect to put some drawings together and submit these to get the building regs signed off.

Hi,
I checked the dvla website about removing an expired endorsement from my licence (SP30). This might be a daft question, but do I need to mention an expired endorsement to a future insurance company? If I do, what's the benefit in paying to have it removed from my licence? All I can think of is if I am hiring a car in the future and they want to see my licence.

Yup, the "it makes a D shape with the M6" is the most probably answer, as debated fiercly in t'sentinel many many years ago.

Besides, calling it the D-road confuses the hell out of people who are looking for the A500. Maybe with all the reworking of the road taking place in stoke they could put up new name signs?

I'm surprised nobody has started a topic about the new updated Used Car Buyer magazine with extra added Honest John content!

Am I the only person that reads it?

Well, well. HJ at Buying Cars along with ex-Car Cropley. So that's where he came from!

I well remember a series of articles about a Porsche 911 that Cropley ran to see how affordable Porker supercar motoring could be - naturally they got good deals and a good car by using trade contacts and know-how. Jeez I was envious!

As I recently said in another thread, What Car? is actually full of sound (new) car-buying advice and bags of data. Sounds boring but v useful. Autocar: repositioned for a 'younger' audience dotty about horsepower, top speed and 0-60, but quite good for the more exotic motors.

Other big motoring titles? Forget 'em.

I need to remove the rear bumper on a 2004 Skoda Fabia to fit reversing sensors. I can't find any obvious bolts or screws that hold the bumper on. Any help would be appreciated. Read more

Question Peugeot 807
Ian from Manchester

I have bought a Pug 807 2.0 HDI. Generally its good but the diesel just doesnt have any top end poke. Great around town but try and open it up and its gutless. The dealer says the emissions filter may be causing problems.

Does anyone have any experience of this engine? Is there anyone in Peugeot (remain anon if you like) who can give me some low down on this. Thanks

The 2.0 110 has more torque at very low revs than the 2.2, but once you are above 3000 revs, the 2.2 will fly in comparison.

I drive a 2.0 110 C5 and think it is great, not a very very fast country road car, but it aint slow.

Give it a bit more time, check the air filter, make sure fully synthetic oil is used and learn to use the torque.

Out for a walk with the clan yesterday and saw a guy pushing along a pushchair. So what? you may ask but this one was quite different from any I've seen before. It looked almost like a small car equipped with body kit styling and what looked like alloy wheels! Whatever next? Bull bars, tints, spoilers, 500w sound system, sat nav...?

They say many dogs look like their owners well in this case I think I can guess what sort of car this guy drives. He obviously wants his baby to share the experience. Read more

Hi Phil - I've seen the sort you describe with the wire wheels but this was totally different, like I say it appeared to have plastic Vitara like 'body kit panels' and car like alloys!!!! Very streamlined and very expensive looking.

BTW - Mrs V's fine and doing very well with her driving. I'm not losing any more hair and am looking forward to the day when she can take me out clubbing and drive me home :)

My beloved has suggested that I buy her a turbodiesel Marea estate (she's half-Italian, and has a soft spot for Fiats). My research suggests the Marea isn't actually a bad car, apart from catastrophic depreciation and a tendency for all the plastic trim to fall to bits, but that Fiat dealers aren't always the world's best. So, is there anything about the TD Marea that makes it a poor DIY prospect?

(I quite fancy the five cylinder 130JTD version if we can find one at a sensible price.)

Hi Uda,

As mentioned in my earlier comment in this thread, ebay is the place to source these. As Mareas never sold in huge numbers in the UK you may be better off searching for an Alfa 156 Workshop Manual on CD Rom and then send an email to the seller, as I would be pretty confident they can also source one for your Marea.

Good luck,

Clarkson didn't like it, but that doesn't mean anything really. It would be on my shopping list if I was looking at this size of car.
