Found them to be very tight. A squirt of WD40 once you have cracked them undone half a turn and leave them for a couple of minutes makes all the difference. I have a lenght of of tube with an old spark pluf threaded section brazed on the end and I use that to block of the hole whilst I blow all the debris out of the recess. and as above a touch of copper ease. A couple of years ago there was a tramp living in
one around Islington/Clerkenwell on Spencer Street. Seriously doubt that either
he or the car is still there.

I hope not. I once raced one in my 1.6 205 gti. Destroyed it. Admittedly it wasn't one of the Abarth ones (were they 105tc and 130tc jobbies?).

Just wanted to know your opinion on something:

Whilst having a look at the new exhaust Ive had fitted, I noticed that the rubber exhaust hangers looked a bit tired. (lots of open cracks) The ones that are on, are not too old, (23/11/03) and was therefore wondering whether or not there was anything I could do to prolong their life a little more than a pathetic 5 months, as I doubt this is their normal lifespan?

Any ideas? I had thought of spraying the new set with something like Armerall or similar product.

Many thanks

Daniel

Hi, thanks for all the responses so far.

Thanks frostbite, that sound like the product I need. Armerall is probably a similar product, its a rubber protector, fighting off water mainly, and stops it from drying out and perishing.

I know that these are 5 months old, because I bought and fitted them (well my dad fitted them :)) However, I think your on to something regarding the stress. My dad said they were a pain to fit, with one of them needing to be stretched in order to fit the other.

From this I have gathered that I may have fitted the wrong size, although if they were any bigger I think that the exhaust would hang too low as it appears to be at just the right height at the moment.

Thanks for the replies.

pug 405 gltd/am going to change pads and discs on front, one thing that has stumped me is how to lever the piston back to allow for new pad and disc width(any ideas please)also, the previous owner had decided to make the disc screws rounded,i.e. i cant get in there with a phillips or straight edge(should i just drill them out)or is there a easier way.many thanks john Read more

For removing the screws you could try either a impact wrench or driving them round with a centre punch, this is risky but sounds like you don't have a lot to lose.

One of my relatives has recently ordered a new mark V , vw golf, 1.4, 90bhp FSI. I have read the comment by HJ about the launch in the UK may be delayed cos these petrol engines depend on 100% sulphur free petrol. As the car will be used in Germany and the UK has anyone heard of any problems? Is there any UK petrol which would be OK ? Grandad. Read more

I have a Mitusbishi GDI engine in my car, which is also a petrol direct injection engine, similar in concept to the FSI.

These engines are reputed to thrive on higher quality petrols, and use a different type of catalyst compared to multi-point injection petrols.

GDI engines need to been driven hard to stay clean and working well, and mine has 67k of motorway miles. It is fine with standard fuel from Shell/BP.

UK oil refineries (there's only about 3 left!) are being upgraded to supply ULSP fuels. So in conclusion:

1) there will be a better choice of fuels in time
2) the car would benefit from a premium fuel...
3) but probably unnecessary unless you do a lot of short journeys at low average speed.

Fuel pump packed in (lots of noise, loss of pressure/delivery) then ominously quiet as the car coasted to the hard shoulder...
Main dealer replaced fuel pump today, but the car refused to fire up. They say that they don't have enough experience of these old cars (!) and have recommended I take it to a fuel injection specialist. Is it likely to be anything simple that I can check? Air in the system? Needs bled? It now has a flat battery thanks to the dealership. Overall not a good day. Any suggestions would be most welcome.
Thanks. Read more

Try a Bosch dealer? There\'s a dealer locator at:

www.boschautoparts.co.uk

I used to have an Audi 100 2.0E, which gave me great service for ten years, especially after I switched servicing from VW/Audi main dealers to an independent VW/Audi specialist.

It is standard practice for insurance companies to require details of any deviation from the standard specification. Well how is that defined?

Boosted engine performance would clearly require reporting. But what about less obvious modifications such as the drilled and grooved brake discs HJ has included in his news column? What about spoilers, lowered suspension, wider low profile tyres etc etc?

Obviously there is an argument that spoilers, discs, tyres etc could improve handling and braking. There is a counter argument however that these modifications encourage a more spirited driving style.

Good point ND, but 'reasonable' and 'insurer' don't really go together. :-)

Saw HJ's comment about residual values on these cars at auction. My local main dealer is selling a 1,000 mile 03 2.2 Elegance in silver for only £13,495 - seems a bargain at that kind of price and cheaper than a nearly new Network Q Omega Read more

GM have obviously produced an 'orphan' to rank alongside the Avantime, 166, Vel Satis, Scorpio, 607, Safrane et al.

They did have a tricky problem, though. The respected Omega needed replacing and GM's european brands are not strong enough to take on the Germans in a status obsessed market. So what to do? GM tried to offer something different and, predictably, have failed. Would a conventional alternative have succeeded?

If GM are serious about competing in this market will they have to follow Ford's lead and buy a suitable brand? How much would BMW cost them?
