They come to your door to fit, and are much cheaper than any of the fast-fit places.

I know you can have your car MOT tested up to a month in advance if you present the previous MOT certificate at the time of the test. Does anyone know if you can have your first MOT, on a 3 year old car, a month in advance, i.e. Post dated to the date of registration. Would presenting your V5 be equivalent to presenting your previous MOT.

Maybe a bit late, but also been there and done that. Took my car for its first MOT at the beginning of Jan 2004 with the V5 - it was first registered on 29 Jan 2001. Collected it with MOT dated to 29 Jan 2005, 12 months and 4 weeks from date of first MOT so it can still be done! NB Garage doing the MOT said they have to check with DVLA before they can do this though, so maybe best not to try it on a Saturday.

Hopefully a simple one, this:

I've recently acquired an extremely nice N-plate Micra SLX, which has the 4 speaker RDS system fitted. The speakers are surprisingly good, but the head unit is on it's last legs (after two replacements, I believe).

Does anybody know if this factory fitted stereo uses a standard ISO audio connector, as I have a CD player to drop in that's already fitted with one but would rather not dismantle a chunk of the fascia if it's going to involve wiring beyond my know-how. While we're at it, anything not obvious I should know about taking the fascia off?

Cheers folks! :)

I am looking at buying a new car from a broker. Anybody got any experience/advice on this? In particular anybody know if "UKCARBROKER.CO.UK", are OK? They are based in Derby and are the web trading name for UK Vehicle Logistics Ltd.

Any comments gratefully received. Read more

what is the most likely thing to cause a blown head gasket?
where online can I find a 309 rear quarter panel?

With regards to cooling problems (especially in diesels) it seems that either the cooling fans seize up or the electrical contacts corrode due to their relatively exposed position. Then when the fan is needed it doesn't run, coolant boils and so on. I've replaced several blown head gaskets caused by this problem, diesel Maestro's/BX's/Astra's. Worth checking that the fans runs when it should whilst you're in a position to fix it rather than sat in traffic.

Has anyone added a CD autochanger to a current model Honda Accord? Much though I want an autochanger, I'm not prepared to pay Honda dealers £500 to fit their version i.e. about £300 over the odds. Alternatively, does anyone know how to remove the radio/CD player and then I can see what connections are available? (Yes I know the control panel is unique to the radio.) I've had a brief look but it seems as if Honda started with the radio and built the car around it. (BTW local Honda dealer no help whatsoever.) Read more

Forum Accident

A couple of months ago my wife had an accident in her car.

She was pulling out of a T-Junction turning right and all the traffic on the lane going the other way was stationary. She edged out to check nothing was coming from her left and proceded to pull out. An impatient idiot had decided he wasn't waiting with the other traffic so was overtaking all the stationary traffic. Because of his speed he left 20mtr skid marks and ploughed into my wifes car. Bear in mind he was travelling on the wrong side of the road going in excess of the 30mph limit.
His insurance decided straight away that he was to blame so my wifes car was repaired and we paid the excess.
His insurance company sent us letters stating that they accept full responibility and last week sent us a cheque for the excess.
The cheque was paid in and returned to us by the building society with them claiming it had been stopped. I rang his insurance company and they have now decided that they are not accepting liability even though I have a letter from them accepting full blame.
They are now claiming damages from my wifes insurance and I am not to happy.
Can they do this? and what should I do now. Read more

I agree. If you sent them a cheque and then stopped it before it was banked, they'd be on to you faster than you could say "I'll get you, Dangermouse".

Don't let this rest. Good luck, and keep us informed.

Does anyone have any information about sat nav updates? I have asked Nissan by phone and email about any updates for my car, several weeks later there has still been no reply.
do I have to use the nissan disc in the sat nav or is there anyone else who does them that would be suitable? Read more

Altea Ego

most sat nav systems are made by a few makers, most use the navtech maping. Find out who makes your system and go to that web site. Beware - its gonna be £££ expensive 120 quid plus.

Citroen Picasso... with overboost...

Is this switchable in somw way, or just marketing speak for a medium pressure turbo? Read more

GrumpyOldGit

This is what Citroen say about it. I assume this is a turbo diesel engine?

"The fantastic new 1.6HDi 16V 110hp engine combines the power and driveability of the latest common-rail diesel technology with enhanced acoustics and vibration control, while ensuring a significant reduction in fuel consumption and emissions. An overboost function integrated with the engine management system provides additional bursts of torque over a short period, for overtaking or in emergency situations."
