We have to have them. I assure you that I don't like them anymore than you do, but its part of funding a website which is free to you to use.
That makes it a subject which is a difficult one to debate, or at least for us to allow debate upon. We cannot risk annoying sponsors to the point where they choose not to provide us revenue.
Please understand the issue and live with it and them. By all means if one is giving you technical or usability problems, then mention it. Sometimes they are troublesome and we don't always know.
But if you have a comment as to whether or not pop-ups should exist, it is far better done in e-mail to HJ at mailto:letters@honestjohn.co.uk - if you wish, by all means copy to the other moderators.
But they do provide a revenue flow which [barely] pays the cost of the Backroom; so annoying as they are, they do allow us to be here.

My Mum's Clio is now 10 years old, although it has only done about 45,000 miles (nowadays less than 1000 miles a year.) It's just coming up to MOT time and because it's never had a replacement belt I've asked the garage to replace the belt before doing the MOT. They tell me, however, that it is a pig of a job on the Renault diesel. The 'book' time is 4 hours, but they seem to recall it took them about 6 hours the last one they did. Now, I have to say that this garage we use for MOTs is 100% trustworthy.I have never actually come across any other garage that equals them for honesty and reliablility, so I don't doubt them for a moment on this.
Could someone please explain to me why this engine is particularly awkward. I imagine an engine mounting has to be taken off at one side, but even although, 6 hours seems an eternity!

My experience with the Pierburg is almost word for word the same as Drew20's. Haynes manual very useful. Only quibble can't get the tick over down to what I regard as a reasonable level, though I'm not sure what to believe on this as different sources give different figures. Anyway mine seems high. I reckon once you've got the carb running reasonably to your satisfaction don't be tempted to tinker. I don't think it's too tinker friendly.
With Renault now selling the Megane estate (sport tourer) in the UK, unlike the previous model, what are the pros and cons of buying one over the Scenic?
What do you in BR-land think??? Read more
Can you quantify "nicer to drive"? As the owner of a first-generation Scenic, what does the second-generation one have over the Sport Tourer to justify the price difference?
Anyone driven the first and second generation Scenics who can give objective report of the differences, and which is better?
can anyone please help me. on friday night i was hit up the rear end. the other car was only doing about 20-25mph when he hit me. the tow bar saved my car from major panel damage all i got was a slight mark on the bumper or so i thought.... the guy was going to pay for the damage himself. but when i went to the garage to get cost of damage the bloke asked me to open the boot. to my shock the guy who hit me has only hit me so hard that the inside of the boot has been pushed upwards and i think slightly inwards... im i right in thinking that the car will have to go on a gig. or may the insurance write it off????? its a 1994 2.5 v6 with 93k on clock... please help me if you can

Apologies if this has been covered before - have done a forum search but no success.
I have just been away on holiday with various relatives who have a Toyota Picnic, Galaxy & Peugeot 806.
With the launch of the new Grand Scenic as well, this prompted me to look at the safety of the rear passengers.
Has anyone any experience of actual rear end accidents with these type of cars? Pictures of Zafiras and Grand Scenic look as if the rear seat is practically touching the bootlid, and your head would not be far from the rear windscreen. I seem to remember Jeremy Clarkson once saying that he would not put his loved ones in the rear crumple zone.
My brother said that they were no closer to the rear of the car than you were in a supermini but I think you are.
Any thoughts? Read more
Just checked out the Euro NCAP website - interesting to see that there are no rear end tests done? Only front, side impact, pedestrian and pole tests!
Why no rear tests? Is it because any object running into your rear would theoretically have a crumple zone in it (ie. the front of another car) and therefore hard to simulate, as opposed to the front impact into a solid structure?
I've had a bit of a squeak for some time from the front of the engine. Today, after a long run, the fan(s) continued for a bit after I'd switched off, and I realised the noise was still there, so I now know the cause.
Is it
i) something I should worry about or
ii) something that a quick squirt of WD40 in the right place would cure, if so, where? Read more
Sorry I dont know had I read your reply earlier I could have done. though I expect someone else may know
I'd have a guess it's DL as in "DL" who is a poster on this very forum/thread.
