April 2004
hi, i replaced my handbrake cables yesterday afternoon (only the ones to the wheels), but now the passanager side is stuck on??, ive double checked everything has gone back together ok, but it does'nt seem right. i did notice that the passanager side rear drum was a bit tight to refit, it seemed as if it was hitting on something but it wasnt.
im pretty sure that the shoes etc went back on correcttly, has anyone got any ideas??, pic's would be good so i can match them up & double check the fitting.
the normal brakes work fine.

Comments/suggestions would be appreciated. I wasn't happy with the condition of the brake fluid in my son's car and went for a complete fluid change. Thankfully none of the 4 nipples were seized and we started the job beginning at the rear first. At each wheel very little fluid came out for each stroke of the pedal and it took many strokes per wheel before there was say half an inch rise in the jam jar. No air bubbles were seen other when evacuating the plastic pipe at each go. I even tried opening each nipple a turn to increase flow but this did not happen. At the end of the job my wife, who had been topping up, commented on how little fluid she had had to put in. Subsequently the brakes are now spongy and I will have to have another go. Compared to attempts over the years this seems to have not been a success. What could be causing the problem-master cylinder maybe? Thank you. Read more
Thank you.
I just followed the link in the Auction report on the right and had a look at the results page for Brightwells. Some seriously cheap 4x4s but no indication of the quality of the vehicles.
Has anyone here been to Brightwells? Any comment on the general condition of vehicles passing through there? Read more
I purchased a Late 1994 Discovery 3.9 V8i from Brightwells last year for £4,300.
I live in Leominster so it was particularly usefull to me.
It was my first time at an auction and any questions I had were readily answered.
I had done my homework before going and knew what vehicles that were in the auction I wanted to see and also what price I was prepared to pay. It's useful to look through the previous auction results to see what prices the kind of vehicle you are looking at has gone for in the past. I guess it's all down to what someone prepared to pay on the day. The vehicles I particularly went to see all went way above what I expected.
The vehicle I ended up with was not described correctly in the catalogue as I was particularly after a ES model with air-con etc. So when this ES model turned up (admitedly with no history) and the bidding dropped down to £4,000 I had to join in.
It has been a very reliable vehicle and I have had it converted to LPG. I even rang the previous owner to find out any history which I was able to do.
Sorry for the long winded reply but I would certainly recommend them to anyone.
I have been having a discussion with a colleague this afternoon about buying cars at auction as he's after a little runaround for his Mrs.
What checks do auction houses do on cars that they're selling, and what are they obliged to announce to the customer at the point of sale?
My understanding was that all cars were data checked and anything dodgy was announced - eg. if its on VCAR or its had a plate or colour change and things of a similar nature. Am I right?
I'm trying to convince my friend he'd be better buying from auction than the local "Arthur Daley" type dealer, but he's got it into his head he's going to end up with something thats been written off or is a cut and shut or other equally ridiculous scenarios. Read more
I would recommend that you be particularly wary if the mileage is "Not warranted". We recently got interested in a car that was coming up for auction at one of the large places hereabouts. We did a full HPI check on it before the auction and discovered that the supposedly warranted mileage was way out according to the National Mileage Register. NMR had a reading of 140,000 from year 2000 and it was being sold this year at a claimed mileage of 57,000. We reported this fact to the auction house and their reaction was "We'll tell the vendor and they'll probably just change the mileage description to Not Warranted." We didn't bother going to the auction to see what actually happened. Anyway, for "Not Warranted" read "probably clocked".
can anyone out there help me i am looking to start up as a trader and am wondering does anyone know where i can get that sort of information to start up.

If you click on the link to the left (just below HJ's smiling face and the link to the Motoring Telegraph) you should find details on how to contact Glasses and discuss subscription. As was mentioned in one of the links, the key seems to be to ignore Glasses and aim to buy at a sensible margin under what the man on the street values the car at. For that reason, it is more reliable to look at Parkers or similar and then work your margin in from the retail/Private Good price.
Going to have my radiator recored is this a good idea? Read more
Try your small local auto shop who may deal with serck-marston or the likes and will probably pass on more of the trade discount to you or even try contacting them direct.
In the end up you will have a new radiator pressure tested and probably if it is not an off the shelf item it will be your original end caps so you are gauranteed it will be the proper connections.
I have a subscription to EVO magazine but are thinking of cancelling it due to it basically getting boring.
It used to have a Buying Guide feature and a few ads for great cars, but they've both gone.
All they seem to feature are supercars and track day cars - not a lot of real world value cars.
In fact if they do have an features on real value cars they seem to show the same old ones.
They seemed to have disappeared up their own backsides with their 'look at us and all the lovely cars we get to drive nah nah nah na nah nah' attitude and the writing is verging on CAR magazine in its use of words of more than 9 letters that dont actually seem to fit with the feature. trying to be arty and wordy for comfort reading.
Also, but this is just jealousy, how dids Jethro Bovingdon get a job on their mag and turned himself into Road Test Editor?!!!

What do you expect with a name like that...?
what difference if any will driving with a roof box and or cruise control make to MPG at motorway speeds. Read more
My current Golf 110TDi is my first car with cruise control, and I am convinced that using it uses more fuel than without it. My assumption is the same as HJ's, that I tend to drive more at constant accelerator opening rather than at constant speed. I have tried to verify this conviction, but have found that fuel consumption varies significantly day to day over the same (long) stretch of motorway at what is seemingly the same set speed. I reckon that wind and wet roads play a significant part in these variations.
Regarding topboxes and mpg, my one European trip with a topbox on a Passat 110TDi (which normally showed 52mpg ish on trip computer) started frighteningly with a dash up the M4/M25/M2 to catch the ferry giving sub 40mpg!. More sensible speeds on motorways through France, Belgium to Germany and back recovered the mpg figures to 44mpg ish, if I remember correctly...
I have a slight problem with my scooter. It is a Yamaha Majesty 125cc with 18000 miles.
Whilst riding at an indicated 60mph, it accelerates as it should. However, as I accelerate to near full throttle, it is as if I can feel the engine deaccelerating before it gives more power. It is very brief and occurs for about a second or two. The bike doesn't reduce in speed, but it feels like the engine is deaccelerating slightly.
Any ideas. Read more

Can anyone recommend a good garage in the Brighton or surrounding area who can service my car. I am looking for an honest garage, who charges reasonably and has an excellent knowledge of cars.
I would prefer an independent garage, since most main dealers charge the earth and many have fixed price servicing which is more of a gimmick than anything else.
Your help would be much appreciated.
Note that the HJ recommendations does not include the e. sussex area. Read more
I use a garage in Hove called Yelboc & Farncombe Garage
- in Brooker Street, just off Blatchington Road. 01273 326504
Its two guys who know a lot about a number of cars and have usually seen everything. I picked my car up yesterday, and they were working on an Aston Martin!
When I took my car in for a new internal CV joint, they checked the whole of the front suspension, brakes etc aswell - all included.
Whilst you're there, you could pop into my restaurant - Thai Connection just on Blatchington Road! ;-) (I'm there every evening after 4!!)
Ben
well, its going into the garage on thursday to have the cable fitted. ive spent enought time laying on my back under it. it will only cost me £40.00 (supply & fit) if i would have known this when i started to do it i would have left it to the garage.
