No problem for me. Heh heh.
Radio locked on to Radio 4, the last tape I played was Peter Tinniswoode's "Tales from the long room" and the CD changer is ballast. And I only recently found out who Jim Morrison was.

So I take it my collection of Metallica CDs is NOT a major contribution to road safety? Regardless of any research, I really can\'t recommend Megadeth\'s \"Sweating Bullets\"
|
The speed your tractor drives at, on the rare occasions it starts, its not a major issue.
On the other hand, I was listening to Pachibel on my way in this morning, so you're all safe on my (yes, I do own them) roads.
|
That was your asthmatic 4x4 I saw vanishing in the distance in my rear view mirror the last time we went Pub hunting with Dave?
Tractor indeed.....
|
Yes it was, because if you remember you went the wrong way to the second pub after the first one appeared to have burned down, closed, and been sold.
|
Details, mere details.
I still left you wallowing through the corners long after I was out onto the straight bits.
Still, at least Dave was able to make use of the slipstream behind your truck. Neat idea of his, tacking some Vectra body panels on that old Cavalier.
|
So it's listen to the fast tracks they call 'misses' and suffer a reduced reaction time, or listen to the slow 'hits' and nod off at the wheel! :-)
I'm going to stick with ZZ Top and take the risk.
|
Gentlemen, gently. Enough! Or it'll get knifed.

I was too busy avoiding the body panels falling off whilst I followed your rusty Alfa to notice Mark\'s truck in front of me.
Oooh, I love the edit button :o) ND)
So do I. DD.

Bzzzzzt!
Nicholas Parsons: Yes Derek?
Derek Nimmo:Deviation.
Nicholas Parsons: Correct, it is indeed deviation. One point. You have 33 seconds to talks about "Music and accidents" starting now ...

God, I really thought that there were some cultured people on this board. Metallica is all noise but I have to agree with you on Megadeth's "Sweating Bullets". The only album of Megadeth's to go for is "Peace sells...but who's buying?"
|
So "Nothing Else Matters" is just noise is it? You'll be telling me that AC/DC's "Shook me all night long" is a feminist anthem next!
|
not sure about the politics behind ac/dc, "shook me all night long" never really did it for me. Prefer Whole lotta Rosie (or at least the intro).
having said that all metallica was noise i might pull out the 2 albums of theirs that I have and check them out again. i am going through a bit of a metal revival (think that's to do with having 2 kids) and seem to recall that Enter Sandman was quite good.

Ooooh yeah!

It is that. Vertigo (aka The Black Album) is a cracking one for the car.
|
Unfortunately and getting back on topic, I drive a 5 series which is truly lacking in power and bass in the radio dept. No dangers in getting distracted.
Having said that in my previous car I had an amp, sub-woofer, etc etc and when coming to busy junctions I found that i could not properly concentrate when too loud.

Oh, I dunno - I always preferred 'Rust In Peace' (although we used to cover a few of those songs live so I'm probably biased) but both 'Countdown to Extinction' and 'Youthanasia' had some pretty good tracks. They were arguably more musical, but a bit less fiery. Everything after that was appalling, as you expect if you let your ego run free and sack the best lineup you ever had...
I wouldn't say Metallica were all noise though - Both bands progressed a lot throughout their careers and covered a fair range of stuff, and there was a fair crossover between their sounds in the early days (due to Mustaine playing for Metallica pre-Megadeth)- 'Mechanix' and 'The Four Horsemen' are the same song, 'Ride the Lightning' is clearly Mustaine through and through, and there's at least one track from 'Countdown..' that pilfers riffs from '..And Justice For All'. I always thought that Metallica were the more musical of the two though, after Kirk learned that soloing is slightly more than just bouncing chromatically up and down the fretboard.. ;)
While we're on the subject, I was listening to my old vinyl copy of Metallicas 'Kill em All' a few days back, and I was amazed by how cheesy it seems now compared to at the time :)

As an 'outsider' I have usually objected to drivers who like the volume turned up, but I hadn't really considered them as a greater threat to others. But I suppose they are giving adequate warning of approach, aren't they?
And how come this thread has developed into a mods' tennis match?
|
More like badminton. I've never known a tennis ball stay in the air this long.
|
Nicholas Parsons: Clement, you have one minute on 'Ploughman's Lunches' starting now.
|
or....
Nicholas Parsons Kenneth, you have 1 minute on Popup advertising. Beep Beep....
Immediate interuptions from DD,ND,M on why this cannot be discussed and is therefore a deviation.

I think you'll find it's repetition.

Presumably if all the mods go off topic then the rest of us have to moderate the thread?
Anyway...... back to music and accidents. I wonder if this is affected by the type of driver. Extroverts are known to operate best in quiet surroundings, whereas introverts operate best with some form of background noise. Could music thus make intorverts safer and extroverts less so? If so, why do (stereotypically - sorry for the pun) extroverts drive around with thumping stereos and introverts drive in silence?
And what about the type of music - Pachebel actually sends me to sleep and I once had to purge my car of it and all similar music.
Plenty of room fo research here. Anyone know how to apply for an EU grant?

">> Nicholas Parsons Kenneth, you have 1 minute on Popup"
Anyone recall the cracking line from the Two Ronnies reading the News years ago?
'And tonight we have a lady who likes Nicholas Parsons - and a Parson who likes knickerless ladies...'
Classic - but about to be deleted?
Matt35.
Mods - it WAS on BBC!

Anyone recall the cracking line from the Two Ronnies reading the News years ago?
H'm.
I recall it as the vicar who had an affair with his kitchenmaid:
His vest was found in her pantry, and her pants were found in his vestry.
Anyway, the Two Ronnies are non-censorable :o)

Oz,
To keep it on a motoring theme;
'An elephant did a ton on the M1 today - drivers are advised to treat it as a roundabout'.
Matt35.

Matt, that one stays. I've got tears running down my face after reading that!
Please don't take this as an invitation to turn this into Haaa...ancocks half hour.
|
ND,
Tony Hancock and Spike Milligan - two of a kind?
My favourite Spike story was when he was a (very talented) musician - playing piano in a hotel bar;
Customer: Do you do requests?
Spike: Of course, what would you like?
Customer: Oh, anything at all.
Matt35.
|
More Milligan:
My name's Banister.
Didn't I pass you on the stairs?
|
Growler,
I find the temptation to respond with further Milligan/Goon gems is irresistible, but have to remember it's a motoring forum after all.
Perhaps it's time for a new Silly Thread?

Perhaps it's time for a new Silly Thread?
If so, my opening gambit would be:
"Waiter - a whisky, and pronto!"
"Righto - one Whisky and Pronto coming up!"
Oz (as was)

patently;
"And what about the type of music - Pachebel actually sends me to sleep and I once had to purge my car of it and all similar music"
But, doesn't the CANON wake you?

But, doesn't the CANON wake you?
:o)
Seriously, when (much) younger I had music like that on late at night on the M4 through Wiltshire after several hours of driving and drove past a panda car at 95 without realising.
She followed me for a few miles, still at 95, still didn't notice.
She flashed headlights. THEN I noticed.
Grew up a bit that night. And woke up a bit.

I would caution against the use of "b********". Said phrase has very specific connotations in Asia LOL.
|
Wow! The auto-censor picks that up too?! I AM impressed.
|
Ah, great and wise Growler. You forget that our illustrious leader frequents Asia and has spread the word on the delights that this site offers. As such, words with specific connotations, as you put it, are now scattered liberally throughout the word filter.
And no, that isn't a challenge......
:o)

Just for the record - Pachelbel.
Mark, is Pachibel a kind of Indy music?

I think it's to do with working out how noisy your elephant is.

"Mark, is Pachibel a kind of Indy music?"
No, it's what you do to your wristwatch before you go on holiday.

I certainly do not overlook the fact our illustrious leader spends part of his time in Asia and indeed not a million mile sfrom where I pursue a mis-spent retirement.
LOL of course HJ would know that with his TH experience! Whoops did that come out right?! TG does pop in here every afternoon, HJ.........
One day I hope I can tempt said illustrious leader to the Land of Sun And Fun. We do speak English here which gives us a bit of an edge. The hat might cause a stir amongst the girls, but hat;s manageable. Not to mention some of his ruthlessly objective comments on the local automotive offerings would be more than welcome. We tend to get rather florid and emotive vehicle tests from reporters who may have done more time round the company bar at the Honda factory than actual time behind the wheel of its latest progeny. Some of the links I have posted may have made this point already.
It is a somewhat mixed blessing that Filipinas are Asia's most beautiful women and thus the mpg and braking stats and all that important data tend to get obscured by the distraction of delectable young things in varying states of deshabillé lolling on bonnets or reviewing their reflection in glimmering mag wheels.
Personally I think this kind of thing should be stopped (well maybe) in the interests of the consumer, sex may sell cars but that is hardly quite the thing -- but don't look for change any time soon. Not in Asia at least. By the way the Ka cat clip (pun intended) is a riot here.
Growlette made me stop my subscription to FHM anyway. She can be difficult sometimes. Buit I still get Back Street Heroes every month.
She says why don't I start an Asian BR?
I said look I don't have any skills in that area beyond filling out a Victoria's Secret Internet shipping order with my Amex number on it. Hmph was all I got.
Too much bandwidth hogging already.Later/---

Then maybe it could be the beautiful Growlette who starts the Asian BR? As long as it doesn't take away her much valued but too infrequent posts here?
