Methinks the judge did himself proud with this one. (Have to feel sorry for his being splashed, though!) Read more
Just seen the latest advert for the scenic. Apparently the selling point is that its like a dog. Have I missed something?

Just returned from 2 weeks hols with a high spec 120DCi as fhe family hire car. I hated it, but only because we have an MPV already, and SWMBO loved it so much she wanted to change my 3 series BMW for a new one. Two MPVs in the family would be a bit much! It really is the consumate sensible family car, really thoughtfully designed, but I can't quite see the panache and personality that others think is present. It really is a terrific car for its purpose, and the DCi engine is much more refined than the PD unit in my Alhambra. I love my Alhambra to bits (really!), but I thought it was a van after the scenic, and I never thought I would say that. The dash is an ergonomic disaster though,it feels cheap (its rubber!) and the digital display is awful. The automatic handbrake takes some getting used to, and does not work that well.
All in all the definitive (sensible) family car.
Please help, I am having a coolant flow problem as I have an extra pipe that I dont know where to put. I will try and paint a picture in your head with what I am working with in the hope you will understand it and know how to advise me best.
ok, This is how I\'ve worked it out, start at the radiator and ther are two hose bottom left, one is the degassing pipe from thermostat housing, then thereis the big bayonet type pipe that runs to the pump, from the pump there are 3 external pipes, one to heater matrix, one to oil cooler and one to underside of thermostat housing, the heater matrix then comes back out to the back of the cylinder head, which in turn goes back through the block to the thermo house, which all makes sense. there is then the radiator top hose which goes from thermo housing direct to top of radiator opposite side to expansion tank. I am then left with one hose coming from the oil cooler which presumably is water coming out of the cooler as the pump is sending in on the other pipe. On my old engine this pipe went straight into the top hose between the thermo and the rad. Effectivley that would be putting it straight back to the radiator to then cool again. On the engine I have got now however it wasnt spliced that way and from what I\'ve seen of pictures when it was in the old car (written off) the pipe went to the expansion tank but on its own fitting next to the degassing pipe. Stupidly enough I didnt realise this was a degassing pipe at the time and had originally t\'d the pipe into the degassing pipe so it still flowed to the expansion tank, however this is putting a lot of pressure into the expansion tank even when cold and I think may of been the cause of the blown head gasket within a mile problem I had. I am really looking for a vote of confidence that putting it back to the top hose and effectively back to radiator makes sense. To me it sounds right as that way it is then cooled down again and makes a complete circuit, however the last thing I want is another problem occuring that may result in being more serious than a blown gasket such as broken oil cooler, cracked radiator etc. Someone else has told me it makes no sense being in the top hose as it would create a back pressure to the thermo hoousing and effectiveley stop the water flowing out of the cylinder head, but I cant see it as the pump is still drawing coolant from the rad therefore creating a vacuum effect that will pull the coolant the right way??
Sorry if I went on one there but trying to give as much detail as possible to get a good accurate response. Read more
Shouldn't the thermostat open at 83 degress C (not 60 ish), as stamped on thermostat? Atleast it did on mine when I recently changed it for a new one.
Just heard a rumour that lancia are to disappear completely at the end of the year. All I can say is noooooooooooooooo! I thought they were coming back to the UK and they also had an integrale replacement due to appear in 2005/2006. I bet alfa romeo will be stealing the drive train with their 4x4. Blasted accountants that don't know the value of the lancia brand (at least among those that know the real cars not just heard the ugly rumours about rust)
Sniff, time for a black armband, sniff.

And don't forget the Grand Prix heritage of Lancias - didn't Ferrari take over the Lancia D 50 and turn it into a very successful GP car driven by the likes of Collins and Fangio? And didn't Ascari do some early research into the effects of salt water on Lancias in Monte Carlo Harbour? Pity to see such a marque go to the wall - they were one of the "exotics" of my youth and always remember a ride in my uncle's Beta, seemed rather different to dad's Austin A55. And along with an Alfa Guilietta Sprint GT I always fancied a Fulvia (and later an Integrale)
Starting repeats tonight at 9:50 BBC2.
I would guess many on here will identify with these guys (I did) and find it most entertaining and amusing.
Episode 2 (which in true BBC fashion may not necessarily follow E1), contained many references to motoring and 'street furniture'. Read more
Yeah, great series, thanks for the heads up
I had one majorly close call on the way into work this morning.
M4 westbound approaching a series of lorries and a junction I moved into the middle lane behind a van doing 70. Both middle and right hand lanes full of cars. The right hand lane started slowing up significantly whilst the middle lane remained at 70 (causing the center cars to start passing those in the right lane). Then a car sweeps into the middle lane inches in front and going slower than me (maybe he was trying to exit the motorway?) I had to slam on the brakes and swerve to the right to avoid hitting him but as the road was damp the wheels locked and I ended up skidding sideways down the middle lane of a congested M4. Fortunatly I managed to pull the car straight again and got over to the hard shoulder witout hitting anyone. I'm damn glad I was on the ball this morning! Read more
Plenty of threads on here about what to do if you're being tailgated, I think the safest one (not the one to get the best revenge / teach the other guy a lesson etc) was to slowly back off your speed so you don't have to brake hard anyway.
I agree, putting it into practice all the time isn't easy!

I'm picking up a 2001 Mondeo Zetec next week and have a question about the keys. The dealer gave me the main key with the 3 buttons (lock, unlock & unlock boot) along with a much smaller key with no buttons at all.
Should I expect 2 main keys? If I do and he hasn't got the other one, do they cost much to produce?
Thanks. Read more
If you want a spare remote control key you can pick the remote bit up on Ebay for about £20-£25 or less and buy the key bit from Ford dealer for about £4 (cut for free usually). you can then program the new remote and key (immobiliser) using your other two keys, as per the vehicle handbook.
Own an "N" plate Cavalier hatchback 1.8i. I am sure I have a wheel bearing on the way out , but the garages ive been to cannot tell me which one is on the way out . They have had the car up on a 4 point lift , then put the car in gear and listened to the front wheels while car is up in the air , and cannot see any problem , theres no play in the wheels either !
Went to tyre fitters today , and did notice that on one front tyre the inner part of the tread was worn down more than the rest , it looked very odd i must say , so changed the tyre and had tracking checked and put right , they said it was out 2mm on one side and 4mm on the other , but we still have the noise ! !! ! ! arghhhhhhhhhhhhhh please help before I spend and absolute fotune ( which i havnt got ) ! ! ! ! This is just a reply to No Dosh in the computer forum -- Moddies pls wipe or redirect as appropriate and thanks to anyone with the patience to read this. If I stray outside the Board\'s boundaries put it down to anno domini and the tropical heat. (Jeez it\'s a killer this week, 36 C every day, Lord knows what my electric bill for a/c will be this month...)
LOL, ND -=- to your post in the Computer Forum..... with an ice cold San Miguel in the clutch hand and Growlette yelling faster faster from the back seat.......while I text my broker and tell him to sell my IBM stock.......Never mind the Nokia 6820.
No, not ever.
Whatever the impression conveyed I would like to say all our Harley riders in trhe Philppines and indeed the other clubs I know are mainly ex Nam or Gulf War and expat Brits who have seen a lot and done a lot and have a very realistic view of their own mortality, We do ride hard and fast, very much so, our Iron Butt Award went to a 1700km in 24 hours rider last month. Not sure I could do that myself. At all times we follow the traffic code (except at Easter when there isn\'t any traffic!) We dress appropriately in protective gear, especially our girls. Each ride has a designated leader who will navigate a section of the ride to a specific place, let\'s say a gas station with a Starbucks where we all take a break and then another leader will take over. He is responsible for paying the expressway tolls for everyone and leading the ride. At the back is a designated \"sweeper\" whose job it is to make sure everyone keeps up and to take care of a problem (flat tire, traffic violation etc). All have cellphones of course. especially important we all drink lots of H2O or Gatorade in this heat, particularly our girls with their small frames. We ride in staggered formation so we \"own\" the highway lanes we occupy and prevent PFD from crowding us. It is everybody\'s job to look after everybody else.
I would take my helmet off to our Filipinas, who are truly good sports and put up with our shenanigans. Terrific girls. Not only great to look at but they keep us in line and they love to ride as well. Those little arms wrapped around you -- would you believe Growlette sometimes dozes off on long straight stretches at 100 mph!...! Just keep \'em off the karaoke in the evenings....
There is a lady\'s riding course next week which i have enrolled Catherine on. She\'s a bit nervous with the way her Virago drops into the bends so I\'m hoping this will help. I would rather see her on a Harley Sportster which is a much solider bike, working on that but expensive....$$$
I cringe when Growlette says from the back of my Hog hey Dadi why did you freak out on that bend? You don\'t lay it into the corners like you used to when I first met you (old age). Oops, losing it mate, biker babe asserting authority.I have to admit my chicken strips on the tyres do look a bit unmolested despite 1000 km of country roads in 3 days.
Metzeler vs Dunlop? All suggestions gratefully received..... Thommo?.....
We participate in a number of action groups to lobby the authorities into raising the profile of motorcycles in their traffic planning. This has met with some success. www.motorcyclephilippines.com
The largest Harley group in the RP is probably the Mad Dogs MC. I\'m not a member (my group is The Chosen Few) but I do ride with them and they do a lot of good work for the orphanages and the street children. I am glad to participate in that. Growlette is at once an angel and a disciplinarian with the kids and they love a back-ride on her little Virago 400 cc. We took 40 of them on a flight round the big volcano the other week (can provide a link if anyone interested). Can\'t tell you how it felt to see those little faces grinning from ear to ear.
We drink a great deal of beer and shoot a lot of BS round the bar. Bikers do. The girls in de Pilipinas love to ride on Harleys. Hondayamazukis? Ducatis? No. I don\'t know why. Ask them.
Wouldn\'t swap it for anything. If this is where it all ends, well bring it on.
Doesn\'t get a whole lot better than that. Sorry if I bored you but there was a health warning up front.....

Hi Growlette,
Just to say - good luck with your bike course - let us know how you get on!
Also - don't be shy about writing here. I'm sure your English is just a tad better than most of our Tagalog (?), and it's always very interesting to read your reports.
Take care

Just got a recall notice for the A3 today. Might be worth adding to the car-by-car breakdown. I saw the original one "29-9-2003: On 21,694 cars shatter cracks may occur on vacuum pipe to brake servo, leading to loss of servo assistance to brakes." But as my car is 04 I'm assuming this was done.
The new recall states "On A3 Quattro models, in rare cases there is a possibility that the left rear brake pipe may become damaged. In extreme cases this could result in failure of one brake circuit"
If only they would do something about the brakes being ridiculously over-servo'd - it's the only thing I don't like about the car.

SootyTP said "I'd be surprised if some left-wing council doesn't employ him as a tyre warden in 6 months when he'll be let out on license"
Well they could employ him if he was only to operate on the tyres of untaxed and uninsured vehicles? :-)
