I know this has cropped up before but I can't find it in Forum Search (no doubt DD or ND will find several threads!!) but daughter has just bought a new car and was offered upholstery and paint protestion for £299. Having spent all her money I said I would use my Autoglym Resin and a few coats of Extra Gloss and then nip and buy a couple of cans of Scotchguard to do the seats.
Out local store that sells everything under the sun said Scotchguard no longer produced because it stops carpets/furniture rotting when thrown away, therefore no longer environmentally friendly?
I call upon all you experts to suggest an alternative (or 10) which no doubt you will do - so thanks in advance!
My wife says the real alternative is to not spill Coke/chewing gum/etc on the seats which is certainly the cheapest alternative!
The car, by the way, is a Clio 1.5 DCi, with climate, Cd, alloys etc and before anyone says she could have chosen better, it is what she wants! So nothing else counts - you know what kids are like!!
Thanks

Thanks DD - I did another search and came up with same link - goodness knows why I didn't find it in the first place - perhaps you have to spell correctly!!
Actually, as everyone knows - it's much easier to get DD to find the links than use the search!!!!

Last week my Fathers Range Rover became a total loss after a fire in the off side engine compartment. It was only two years old. Rover say the warrantee no longer applies because the car is a write-off. I can't believe this. The vehicle has been maintained properly and I would expect Range Rover to replace it.

Has anyone else any comments to make.

As its a total loss, it is an insurance matter, not a warranty matter.

If the cause of the fire can be traced to a material defect with the vehicle, or negligence on behalf of any servicing agent you and/or the insurance company can reclaim any loss from the manufacturer from that party.

My car has just had its first service (10,000 miles) at the local Toyota/Lexus dealer. The oil they have used is Castrol Magnetec. I'm just interested if anyone has any opinions (good or Bad) of this product. I was hoping they would use Mobil 1.

That 'stick' bit is a clever bit of Marketing by Castrol, the esters in any semi-synthetic oil will have the same effect and therefore Magnatec is not unique in having the sticking properties, but if it helps sell oils then who can blame them!

pgg

My car has been serviced using Mobil 1 since new and prior to me acquiring it, its service intervals, though variable, have been around the 15k mark.

I purchased the car in January just after the warranty expired and would like to carry out more frequent oil changes, about every 5k. It is a modern 2.5l common rail turbo diesel with 55k on the clock. Can I use fully synthetic oil of viscosity rating 5w/40, but of a cheaper brand, without causing any problems?? Read more

I agree with most of the reasonable comments above. I do sometimes think that oil has become a mysterious science, when it is very simple. The rules are...
1). What spec does your car need. Probably 10-12 local companies can easily meet or exceed it.
2). Go synthetic if possible. It now is very reasonaly priced.
3). Use a low priced oil if possible. It is all the same, but choose a good quality filter. Europarts are wonderful here.
4). Change the oil and filter very 6,000 miles.
My Mercedes 230E was serviced with Mobile and Esso synthetic from new. I have continued it with French Hypermarket own brand synthetic oil. It is well priced and well specked. Over 40,000 miles on, it now has 108K on the clock and is as sweet as ever. When I change the oil it is darkish, but never black, and that is with mostly urban driving.

i have a 52reg focus and it needs a new power steering pump already, leaking aparantly.

under warranty after i saw the quote of £300 fitted thank god!

was it just a faulty one or is this common? Read more

£300 fitted is cheap in my experience!
Some run of the mill Peugeot PAS pumps can be over £300 alone - and they fail with alarming regularity!

I didn't expect that to be so difficult. As readers may be aware, I am proud owner of a 1983 Mark ii Polo, 1.1 Formule E. Don't think there's anything much wrong with it (except for tell-tale light for indicators which doesn't seem to be working, and it uses a prodigious quantity of oil - I suspect it could do with a new oil breather).

Anyway, it is surplus to requirements. Not worth MOTing & selling though (£35 for MOT, plus £21 to put it on ebay/in Autotrader etc, so not worth the risk of throwing money away on the MOT when it's probably not worth £150 even with 12 months MOT). Anybody want it (free)? 6 weeks' tax, 48 hours' MOT. Half tank petrol. Haynes manual. Just south of Tower Bridge? Recent cambelt; brand new points & plugs & rotor; recent leads, well maintained recently. Recorded 83k miles, but more probably at least 183k or maybe 283k. Starts 1st or 2nd time.

The real point of this post is that finding somebody to take it was remarkably difficult. Some breakers wouldn't touch it for any money, most wanted at least a tenner, some £25. Finally found somebody who will take it for free provided I deliver. Read more

I don't suppose anyone knows if the local councils in Kent have a similar policy - the web site only seems to apply to London...

My car needs a new front set of tyres. My main concern is that the car is fitted with alloy wheels. If I take the car to a tyre centre they are sure to damage the wheels.

Which is the best tyre centre for cars fitted with alloy wheels? Read more

Hi,
Can someone please help me??? Being a woman....and not knowing too much about cars (more than the average though :-) )
I need some answers please!! I am about to buy a very cheap Rover Metro 1.4 GTA -M Reg -46,000 miles (£50) ....the car has oil leaks though. Would that be the head gasket going? As far as I know, these cars are notorious for this problem?
Could anyone please tell me how much this might more or less cost me to fix if that\'s the problem? Or any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thanks Jo...
