You seem to be writing a lot. What are you doing at uni?

A friends Nissan QX 3 years old. When cold it won’t start without a little throttle but once started you need to keep a bit of throttle on for a mile then it is perfectly ok for the rest of the day. I have not had chance to look at it but assume the stepper motor is not kicking in. NO ECU detected Faults. Any known faults with this one or suggestions what else can cause this. That's quite a new QX then - A33 series? What's the year reg.?

99% sure its the thermo-element. A simple 'wax-stat' type device that sits under the throttle body and holds the throttle slightly open in cold conditions. As engine warms up it progrssively closes.
Idle air valve might also need cleaning.
These problems are easy to rectify.

If you want longer descritption and more precise information etc., and part no. of thermo-element then e-mail me at:

Just as a matter of interest, who actually makes Vauxhall oils, and is it the same oil that they use at the factory. Read more

Usually dealers bulk buy oil cheaply from any of the main companies (Esso/Shell/Mobil/Castrol etc) for servicing, then in their glossy showroom sell the manufacturer badged oil. My local VW and Toyota dealers use Esso Ultra, the Subaru dealer Castrol Magnatec, so no consistency but as long as they meet the required manufacturers spec shouldn't be a problem.

Incidentally my local motor factors sell 5 litres of Vauxhall 10W40 semi-synthetic oil for £9 inc VAT, and 5l of 15W40 mineral oil for £7 - excellent value.

S reg, can\'t remember which year. 130,000 miles. Full service history to 110,000 when it had all the belts done. Bit of history since then, but not much.

Loads of MOT and stuff. No known problems, no damage or rust.

Can anybody give me a clue as to value ? I looked on the Trader and to be honest the prices seemed a bit high. Read more

Don't ask me, but I'll give you an answer anyway. If we take the range 2,600 trade in to 4,300 forecourt is a sensible private sale figure midway between the two - i.e. 3,500?

THe Growler

Got a long w/end ride coming up so today I flushed out the front and rear brakes on my ride with new Dot4 brake fluid (as per da manual), bled them and everything. She's almost 4 years old so about time I guessed. All is fine.

My question is (or are!): is DOT4 hygroscopic like Dot3, can I store unused fluid without it degrading like Dot3 and does it attack paintwork like Dot3? Nothing on the canister suggests a clue. I called my HD tech but he doesn't know either.

Something tells me mech1 might have the answer, he seems to have a good grasp of the nitty-gritty. Pointers appreciated, because this is imported fluid from the USA (Pitt-Penn) and not cheap.

Do Harley's have brakes? :-)

Hi

I have a citroen AX, which has recently had a new clutch fitted. I thought that this would have made the gear change a bit easier, but I'm still having difficulties. There is also a sort of creaking noise sometimes when I put my foot on the clutch which has me worried that the cable might break - which happened to me last August...

As the clutch has just been replaced, would the mechanic have put in a new clutch cable (since there was a new one put in in August). If not, what are the chances that the cable will break again so soon?

Thanks in advance :-)

Nightmare - another new clutch cable, I think it might be time for me to go get me an apprenticeship at a garage

...or a new car... :-)

Thanks for your reply

If you do I would be grateful to know what you think of it.

I'm particularly interested in:

a) The build quality - how is it for rattles, squeaks & other noises.
b) Seems like a decent drive according to most reviews, what are your thoughts on the handling?
c) Performance with 1.6FSi engine.
c) Anything else worth commenting on

Thanks... Read more

Don't own one but in the last week I've seen:

...
and one with black smoke puffing out of the exhaust every
time it accelerated.
Hmmm.

Well, I haven't seen that on a new Citroen.

I have been searching for a new van for my business. I looked at the Nissan/Vauxhall/Renault model recently. All have list prices over £19k. Here are the results of dealer discounts.

Nissan Interstar £16k +
Vauxhall Movano £15k
Renault Master £12.5k

The renault price is for a brand new factory order LWB van. How can they offer such massive discounts? I cant even find a cheaper import. (The Renault also has the best standard spec.)

Does anyone know where I can compare fuel consuption figures for vans? Read more

Martin, thanks for the mpg info.
The van I am looking at is a new shape 2.5
dci (lwb medium roof). Engine is available with 100 bhp or
120 bhp. How do you find the 2.2 engine pulls when
van is loaded?

It is brilliant I promise you. I ordered mine with the 2.5 cause it had standard ABS but the dealer cocked it up and a 2.2 arrived from France. I ended up making them a silly offer for the 2.2 with aircon as ordered etc., and got it very reasonably. Colleagues of mine run Merc Sprinters and I've yet to hear a good word said about them and with rear wheel drive they go nowhere in mud and snow! If the team send me your e-mail address I'll tell you a little more re:- the Renault engine!

Best Regards.

When I first got mine some idiot dealer had damaged the top couple of heater elements removing a previous dealer's window sticker. I repaired as best I could with the silver paint stuff and all was well for a few months then I started getting bad radio reception. I realised it was when I switched the heated rear window on. Once I removed the silver stuff the reception was fine again. Now I just put up with the duff elements.

BTW just how many of the contributors here on matters Omega are also members of the Yahoo group? I post there occasaionally and pick up a lot of good advice. The Doc's advice on front wheel alignment really helped!

Just purchased a new cylinder head gasket for a 1.1 fiesta. The water gallary holes are only about 3.5mm compared to the holes in the block and head which are measured in centimeters. The old gasket is similar to the new one. Should the holes be larger or is this normal.

Sorry yes your right should have mentioned it. Yes MOT now expired and to add insult to injury tax just run out also So statuary off road notice in force till I get it sorted, nightmare. As you say, once rebuilt will take to a garage for an MOT a few miles away to give it a chance to blow the cobwebs out and get the engine hot. Thanks for the advice.
