If you do I would be grateful to know what you think of it.

I'm particularly interested in:

a) The build quality - how is it for rattles, squeaks & other noises.
b) Seems like a decent drive according to most reviews, what are your thoughts on the handling?
c) Performance with 1.6FSi engine.
c) Anything else worth commenting on

Thanks...

my mother has one and to be honest i am impressed with it i wasn't expecting to be after reading some reports but i would say the build is excellent it is a very quiet car and seems to go and handle well although only a 1.4 the performance is very good . shop around as somebig discounts available even from main dealers . lots of people complain about the indicator stalk one touch for three or four flashes thing but i like it and so does she , very spacious interior.
cheers...keo

Don't own one but in the last week I've seen:

One in a carpark with failed electrics preventing the owner getting in...

and one with black smoke puffing out of the exhaust every time it accelerated.

Hmmm.

That doesn't sound good.

I've not read anywhere else that they were having problems.

Anyone heard of any other issues?

why didn't they use the key on the first one obviously cant explain the second one . but seriously i didn't want to like it but it was a new golf or a new astra well there is no comparison (? spelling). and i now think it's better than the 3 year old golf she traded in for it .

I've ordered one waiting for it to arrive. Got a very good discount from a main dealer (10%), test drove the 1.6fsi and the 2.0GTTDI, then ordered the 2.0FSI, from what i've seen in both demo's the build quality is exactly what you'd expect from vw. I've had a mkiv before and the drive quality is much better on the mkv. The interior doesn't seem as high quality as the mkiv, but it's better than the other cars i've had. the 1.6 was suprisingly nippy, but i was very impressed with the tdi.

10% discount = more cars than customers = one of:

(a) a problem with said car so will depreciate quickly
(b) perceived as too expensive so will depreciate quickly
(c) a mistake by the forecasting dept meaning too many cars made, so will depreciate quickly

(d) VW customers so used to not haggling over price, they wont this time either.

Well, I haven't seen that on a new Citroen.

Not owned but driven a fair distance in 1.6FSH and 2.0 140PS GTD versions.

a) Fine: hewn from solid metal feel

b) Again quite OK, drove both in some quite slippery conditions and everything fine, it handles like an errrm Golf.

c) 1.6FSH words fail me, flat as a proverbial methane emission
Avoid avoid avoid!
(unless of course you want to drive everywhere revving the wossnames off it!)

d) (anything else I assume you meant d) rather than c rev 2 ;)
Expensive for what it is.
6 speed box a bit vague at times, ie block shifting from 6 to 4 resulted in a box full of neutrals.
Fancy wiper parking technology nice touch.
Repeaters in wing mirrors again nice touch
Comfortable driving position.
The 2.0GTD went like the bars but typical VW PD gruffness evident, not the best diesel around

But just far far too expensive, ie it really is not worth twice Mrs FiF's Skoda.

just my 2p

Had a 1.4 as a hire car in Germany a couple of weeks ago.
Can't understand why it had ESP in such an underpowered car yet didn't have rear speakers!
As for the repeaters in the wing mirror, it's surely going to add a few £ to the cost of replacing an already expensive item in what is a volume produced car.
Nice touch with the windscreen spray too.
1.4 engine gutless (no surprise there then!) and handling didn't seem to be any improvement on my old Leon although didn't have a chance to go right to the limit to test this.

Interior not my cup of tea either - prefer the inside of the my 98 Passat.

IMHO the Leon still remains the better car even though it is 4/5 years older!

take for granted you have read hj's road test of 22 jan 04 ?

Wow, thanks for all the replies - please keep 'em coming :-)

Had a quick test drive today and have a 1.6FSi SE booked out for all day Monday.

From my short test drive today I noticed:

1) Ride quality amazing. I went along a road with speed bumps and they were almost un-noticeable. Bumps/potholes are extremely well dealt with. Didn't seem to wallow or roll much either.

2) Although boring looking inside it seems to be really well put together. No rattles and the doors close with a solid thunk.

3) The engine was much noisier than I expected when pulling away etc, but then maybe that was because of the silence from everything else. Need more time away from salesman and out of town to assess performance.

4) Controls were very light, certainly much lighter than my current car.

Looking forward to doing more miles on Monday.

Golf is case of one step forward then two backwards from previous incarnation..

i like the radio display though, having all the station names on the screen is a neat touch not seen that anywhere else.

'Golf is case of one step forward then two backwards'

A car that fullfils every criteria that VW wanted from the next Golf and an array of off the peg performance variants on the horizon. to be honest i think that vw got it right, all except the price!
