HI,

Mech 1 is right, overheating is probably the primary cause in destroying head gaskets. But it may depend upon the engine, its design or construction more so. For example, I have read somewhere that 1991-1994 VW Polos may have had gasket failures due to rough mating surfaces causing them to fail early. Once the head is skimmed, usually when replacing the blown one, the problem rarely happens again. This is quite specific to Polo?s, but shows that it can be dependant upon the engine as the MOST LIKELY cause.

Have you tried www.eurocarparts.co.uk for the rear panel?

Hope this is of help

It's often down to poor engine coolant.......antifreeze needs to be changed every 2yrs or so - the corrosion inhibitors become less effective as time goes on, causing severe corrosion to the cylinder head.

With regards to cooling problems (especially in diesels) it seems that either the cooling fans seize up or the electrical contacts corrode due to their relatively exposed position. Then when the fan is needed it doesn't run, coolant boils and so on. I've replaced several blown head gaskets caused by this problem, diesel Maestro's/BX's/Astra's. Worth checking that the fans runs when it should whilst you're in a position to fix it rather than sat in traffic.
