My son has recently bought a mondeo 2.0 Zetec - 1999.
Failed it's mot and wish bones replaced and steering off centre, but tracking ok and the steering was on centre before.
Last few days, when you turn the key to the second position when the dash lights come on, you get a loudish humm.
since yesterday, there is a kind of road noise but it is not, sounds as though it's coming from the fron. The exhaust is ok.
All help appreciated. Thanks.

Does the hum come from the fuel tank at the back? If so it is probably the fuel pump inside the fuel tank energising before you ask it to supply fuel when you start up. This is all very normal. It normally operates with a soft hum. You notice it more on start up as everything is quiet and your ears pick up the sound.

My present Mondeo, and four previous Mondeos have all made this brief hum or whirring sound on turning the ignition key, it seems to be quite normal.
You've probably only just noticed it as you're having other problems and that makes you aware of things you'd not normally pick up on.

Thanks for your help.
What about the humming noise. The noise I've just noticed is more noticeable at 30mph - comes and goes. difficult to tell where it's coming from, but souns like a louder version of the noise you lads mentioned.

Wheel bearing?

It's probably the noise of the rotor tips on his sister's RX8. Does he follow her to the station?

Thanks again.
May take the car to a garage today or monday as the noise is even more nitceable, i.e. the roar/hum when driving around the 30-40 mph - could be the bearing. Re the start up hum, like you have sais I will leave it. Hoping to go out today and check out a focus c max 16 Tdi auto - have been in one at the dealers when we recently pruchased a new fiesta. Never been driven in it - I like the high seating position. Hoping to get a pre reg British car 04 plate at around 15k - retail 17/5k.
Btw - if it is a wheelbearing on the mondeo, any way I can check this?

Jack up each wheel safety. Look for any lateral play by moving the wheel at 3 and 9, and 6 and 12 o/clock positions. Spin the wheel. If it has a grumbly grumbly (ie. not smooth) noise it is bearings. Don't confuse with brake disc drag.

hi thanks all - I got the car repaired - it was the wheel bearing drivers side - paid few pence short of 90 quid.
thanks!
