Our Punto 1.2 8v (1500m)occasionally makes tapping noise on start up like hydraulic tappets pressurising.Usually from cold after standing a few hours or more.
Since 8v has solid tappets could it be the oil filter NR valve malfunctioning? Anyone else experienced this, or have any other ideas? I spotted similar on another forum. Read more
I am also looking at Porsche 924S 2.5 auto. Usually 1987 with around 100k on the clock. I find them slightly cheaper at under £1000 usually.
Which will be a better proposition if I DIY either? I guess at these prices, depreciation is not an issue. Therefore cheap parts and easy to work on is of high priority.

Hmm.. reversing is fun: water leaks through rear screen rubbers and condenses on rear hatch..

what do i need in the way of first aid kit, warning triangles etc, when i am driving in spain? Read more
Sorry to post again so soon.
With regard to driving licences, I would check whether IDP is required, certainly was in Balearics up to five years ago, couldn't get a hire car without one.
I believe that different rules apply depending on which licence you hold, old style and green paper, IDP required; pink paper, supposed to be EU friendly, IDP dependant on country; new photo licence OK BUT paper appendix MUST be carried.
Sure a quick look at DVLA site will clear it up.

Please cannot someone help! Driving along motorway car just stalls, checked under bonnet and plug lead of it. Car still won\'t start. There was no spark, put a new ignition/coil pack in! Still not starting!! Battery in the car is not the greatest could this be affecting anything? Or is it the immobiliser? Has anyone got and ideas???????
{No need to SHOUT!! Which by typing soley in upper case is effectively what you were doing. Duly edited. DD} Read more
Hall effect sensor in the distributor would seem most likely culprit after checking for the correct voltages at the coil/amp unit. Better off calling in an expert rather than wasting money throwing bits at it. Other possibilities include the immobiliser, ecu, relays etc.

If you need something else doing like an MOT, they'll do things like this for free, if you ask nicely, but if you just go in for that they'll charge you.

If its an electric stop solenoid, can't you intercept the wire that feeds it the 12 volts, and bypass it that way?
Have you heard of a permanent fix for the engine mount problem that plagues numerous Clio DCI owners. There is a continuous knocking sound at low speeds and it spoils an otherwise wonderful little car. The dealers know of the mount problem but have so far been unable to rectify it and its driving us to consider a replacement.......... Read more
thanks thats useful esp. in regard to the possibility of using uprated mounts from other models - worth looking into as we love the car in general.........
anyone else irritated by the amount of space regularly taken up by graphics on HJ's advice page in Sat's Dly Teleg? OK, a picture works well to break up slabs of text, but today's "extravagant" shot of roads uses five of the seven columns and, overall, consumes as much space as the valuable questions and info - and the shot is hardly needed in such proportion to highlight one question about BMW diesel engines. Also a waste, I suggest, is the first column introducing HJ, which has six inches of empty, white space underneath. Page design requirements apart, use of smaller pictures would surely suffice and allow much more text to be used. Forgive my rant - not aimed at HJ, but the subs!

prefer you raw, HJ - I take your points.... wozn't suggesting no artwork, just less but (as you say) design's out of your hands!
The nearside driveshaft on my golf driver (1600cc) is clunking a fair bit so I went to a VW scrapper with the aim of getting a garage to install the part.
I'm aware that the various models have different diameter flanges on the inner CV end, but the scrapper assured me that a shaft off a 1300cc model would fit.
Is this true?
Surely, if the fixing bolts are at different locations, it won't fit!
Even if it does fit, will there be any overloading due to the extra torque provided by the larger engine? Read more
Keep the shaft and just buy the outer or inner and outer as appropriate from Eurocarparts.co.uk or GSF. Much better solution. Regards Peter
Recently I have had to replace the clutch slave cylinder on the above car. Unfortunately a roadside repair man filled it incorrectly with that horrible bright green mineral based fluid (LMB) that should only be used in those wierd citroens. It has wreeked havoc in my 740. Inadvertantly this fluid has also been added to the brake master cylinder of our 340, also with disasterous results.
Master and slave cylindrs on both cars have been changed but we are having tremendous problems, particularly with bleeding.
Has anyone had this happen, and does anyone know what to do? Read more
Thank you RichardW for your help. We have already come to that conclusion ourselves now. Also we think we need to force air through the systems to remove blockages and give them a thorough flushing with DOT4 brake fluid as well. The green slime may have thoroughly killed of our 340 as we have had to buy a banger to get us arounnd, but I can't afford terminal illness by poisoning in the 740.
Could well be I suppose, it goes away after a minute or so seems as the oil pressure builds up. Must be generously toleranced Fiat engineering though, engine's only run 1500 miles from new!
