Golf MkII - is the scrappy being honest? - Jimma
The nearside driveshaft on my golf driver (1600cc) is clunking a fair bit so I went to a VW scrapper with the aim of getting a garage to install the part.
I'm aware that the various models have different diameter flanges on the inner CV end, but the scrapper assured me that a shaft off a 1300cc model would fit.

Is this true?

Surely, if the fixing bolts are at different locations, it won't fit!

Even if it does fit, will there be any overloading due to the extra torque provided by the larger engine?

no hes not.
your golf has an 020 type gearbox
1.3 have an 084 or 085 gearbox.
either obtain a driveshaft from a 1.6 or 1.8 model not an auto though.
if its the outer joint they are really cheap and easy to do.

thanks for the reply,

there is play in the shaft from side to side (i.e. longitudinally) suggesting that the inner CV has gone, but I might as well replace them both as the car done 108K.

there always be a little bit of float.
inner cvs are fairley easy getting the drive flange bolts out is the usual problem.
buy a new torx 30bit and get new bolts from vw as a precation there not expensive.
try g&s or euro for prices but try to get german quality joints.
should take you half a day

Keep the shaft and just buy the outer or inner and outer as appropriate from Eurocarparts.co.uk or GSF. Much better solution. Regards Peter
