Hi
I am after either a peugeot 406 or a mondeo but it has to be Diesel and Automatic about 3 or 4 years old V,W or X reg

I cannot seem to find any anywhere ! do they make em ?

I have never noticed before just assumed they did make em , until now that I want to find one.

Im going to Blackbuse tomorrow and they have none

Any ideas or info about diesel automatics and any reason for them being extremely scarce or even non existant

Thanks Read more

The equivalent Citroen C5 diesel autos are quite common (and cheap - even brand new, with discounts). The 2.2 litre engine is a better bet than the 2.0 litre one. We have a C5 with the 2.2 litre engine and it is smooth and quiet. My only complaint is that the gearbox is only 4 speed.

Don't expect the kind of mpg quoted by Citroen though, as this is a heavy car, but we are getting a combined return of around 35mpg, which includes a fair bit of urban driving.

Just had my Passat serviced at 20k and the only issue that has arisen is that the tyres are 'scrubbing' and have only 2mm.

I think I know what this means but can I get the tracking, alloy wheel balancing and new tyre fitting done at my local small independent tyre place or will they not have the equipment to serve me?

It is a 2.0 SE Petrol 2002 model year. Read more

For what it's worth, on my 97 Passat TDi, of the 5 front sets of Michelins, 4 sets each lasted 27k, the other set only 22k (same journeys, same tyres...!?). Outer edge of the n/s/f has always worn quickest on all of my cars, causing the replacement. (On current Golf TDi 110, front Michelins about to be replaced at 32k, original rear Pirelli P6000 at 58K).

Hi all. I just got my MOT done today and failed on a few things, this is what was said in the report:

1) O/S fault, anti-roll bar link bush split
2) Front pad low
3) N/S front to rear metal pipe coroded, and
4) Front registration plate cracked.

Answers?
1) Quoted £14 for this but how much to fit?
2) Change of front pads, this shouldn't be a problem to fix myself should it?
3) This is a brake item that was tested but have no idea how to fix this myself or how much it would cost to fix. I went to German Swedish and told me I would have to go to a dealer for this. Any ideas? and..
4) Screw off old, screw on new.... this would be okay.

If there are any who know of this I would greatly appreciate the information.... cheers! Read more

thanx for the input guys. bought the items needed except the brake pipe, went to a garage and said he'll fit the pads, bush, and make and fit the pipe corroded, only the section corroded as it runs up, down, left and right into the engine bay. siad he'd put in a union...

a run-down on the prices:
pads £ 22.50 OE
bush £14
plate £6.50
fitting pipe, fit pads, fit bush ~£80

just to let you know!

my daughters boyfriend has just upgraded to a very good condition Ford Escort, he paid £450 and is insured TPFT. Today a car full of 16 year olds collided with his car and caused damage to the front right wing and light, they were obviously not insured and in the care of the local authority, the Police made an arrest and will appear in court to-morrow,they also say the 16 year olds had just bought the car for £40. I seem to remember that insurance companies have a fund for uninsured situations, if there is a fund????, any advice would be most welcome.

Agree. Local Authorities' legal departments are glacial. Well worth a pop though. Uninsured loss recovery is the best bet if you have it.

Hi

Could someone tell me the best way of paying for a private car It\'s £15K so I don\'t want to carry that sort of money around in my pocket.

The dilema is i can leave say a £200 deposit cash & the rest by cheque but then I have to wait for the car until the cheque clears etc. What pitfalls are there ??

Advice please...................

As a seller, I have verified several drafts by asking the buyer to fax me a copy prior to arriving to collect the car and then calling the brank direct to verify they issued it.

My sister has an \'L\' reg Vauxhall Cavalier 1700 Diesel. It is a non-turbo, Vauxhall engine. The hose which connects the radiator to the thermostat housing \'balloons\' after approx. 5 minutes of the engine running. Un screwing the expansion bottle lid releases the pressure. The build up of pressure has forced a small leak in the car\'s radiator, which has been temporarily cured using \'Rad-Weld\'. Today I fitted a new thermostat, re-filled the coolant and ran the car with the heaters on hot, full fan speed. The offending hose still balloons and the system will not bleed itself, or allow me to do it. I can release the build up of pressure via the expansion bottle lid but within a few minutes of the lid being re-tightened the hose again expands. Using the vehicle with the expansion bottle lid slightly undone prevents the pressure building up but this is not a solution. The heaters blow hot and no \'cream cheese\' is visible in any oil way. The expansion bottle does have a constant presence of foaming bubbles, I know this could be the head gasket but couldn\'t it also be the \'Rad-Weld\' foaming slighlty? I know you lot know your stuff, any ideas and how likely (%) is it that the problem is a failing head gasket?

sorry mech1 maybe i am being a bit harsh i personally just dont like diy manuals, its not always the manuals directly but some people who use them seem to think they are a master mechanic because they have a manual. and when in the trade some jobs were made more difficult by the fact that some diy-er had been at the job thinking he was doing it right because the book said to do it that way .
sorry just a point of view excellent for refference as regards torque settings etc and for steadying a table with one short leg.

Telegraph today -

In a live car chase broadcast on TV in Los Angeles police surrounded the car and unleashed a hail of bullets killing the 23 year old robbery suspect ( outside a school).

The TV stations apparently regularly broadcast chases because it pushes up ratings.

It is common for residents to line the streets and wave to cameras when a chase goes through their neighborhood.

Do those who advocate harsher penalties for Johnny Toerag want that happening here?

I think not.

Sorry, I fail to see how this thread can stay motoring related without law and order and political issues entering the fray. No criticism of the existing posts/contributors, but this will deteriorate into a bunfight.

I'm locking the thread.

I am in the process of rebuilding a 100 year old stationary (car link - M25 this morning at J23!) engine which I was originally designed to run on alcohol. I can find a google of sites extolling virtues of ethanol or methanol mixes for car engines but no references on use of pure e or m as a single fuel. Any advice on merits of either gratefully received. I am happy to take replies off line - Email as my profile please.

None of the stationary engine sites have much about alcohol based engines.

Moderators - apologies if car link is too tenuous!

One tip I have learned, is that you need a small amount of water in the alcohol, especially with methanol, or it will corrode metal, especially aluminium. The anhydrous alcohol 'steals' ions from the metal, bu a tiny amount of water quenches this, so make sure the fuel is not over-dried.

Has anyone has this before,

My rear nearside rear tyre on my 306 has perished along the centre line, which has out the tyre out of shape.

At first I thought the wheel was out of balance but neither me, nor the wife remembered curbing anything.

Admittedly the tyre is over 2 years old and has about 40K onit.

It is a well know good brand (not cheap). All of my tyre pressures are correct etc. Has this ever happend to anyone before? The car has not stood, I use it everyday.???

cheers

Presumably in comparison with the other 3/4, this tyre has done poorly, but in absolute terms it must have easily beaten any warranty conditions, and you haven't really been done out of anything?

Is the fault in the rubber or the carcass?
