Drove our 306 for the first time in a while yesterday (my wife drives it most of the time), and thought the clutch seemed heavier than i remembered. Not sure if it was just because i was used to the lighter clutch on my car, but SWMBO also commented on it, saying she thought it was getting slightly heavier.

Reading the car-by-car breakdown, it comments on the clutch cable being susceptible to drying out, which might cause this. Has anybody got any more thoughts on this before i rush out to buy a new cable? Or is there any way to test if the cable is at fault?

OK, fun topic !

Will be replacing my (not fun, apart from vvti engine) (old shape) Corolla soon....

I need something that will carry 2.5 people (2 adults and small person), some luggage ... so no superminis and I but don't need the size of a Passat.... but must be fun to drive (do 35K a year) and not use up too much juice...

Current front runner is 140bhp Celica - just under £15K from www.ukcarbroker.co.uk.

What else should I test drive ? !

I've never fully appreciated this pre-occupation with 'residuals' OK. I know everyone wants to protect there investment, etc., etc. but you're surely always going to take a 'hit' on a motor, particularly a new one. I'm more interested in the 'here and now' and my vRS is currently giving me enormous pleasure. Stop smoking, cut back on the drinking, don't eat out as much as you once used to, cheat the taxman! Make up the depreciation in another way.

Don't misunderstand me ? I'm a 'tight-wad' Northerner who will fight tooth and nail for a 'deal' on almost everything but in this instance what something 'might' be worth in three years time didn't preclude me from buying it three months ago!

Right on...

about my chances of getting a Parking Penalty Charge Notice retrospectively overturned.

Here's what happened. Last December (I know, b****y C*******s shopping) I got caught-out one dark gloomy evening in Central Milton Keynes. Parked in a spot that I thought was OK. It subsequently turned out to be for Community Transport Users (whoever they are) but was identifiable only by a small easily missable (in my opinion) plaque attached to a lampost!

I wrote in, told them as a long-term resident I was aware of the new regs but not this single bay adjacent to two end disabled spaces at the start of a row of normal free (2-hours max) spaces. Still with me? I pointed out that this single bay wasn't easily discernable amongst the plethora of other street furniture that currently adorns our every other nook and cranny, etc., etc. but begrudgingly enclosed my £30 remittance and would they reconsider?

The man, he say NO!

So I took it on the chin whilst simply making a mental note of the No. of the Parking Warden who'd ticketed me in the likelihood that our paths ever crossed again ? heh!

Recently, MK Council has begun to identify these single bays by painting them Apple Green with a Red surrounding border. Quite obviously then, they weren't that easily discernible to the general public and subsequently had to be identified much more clearly to avoid further confusion?

Sorry, but I'm on a bit of a 'mission' at the moment chasing/confronting people who've caused me 'fiscal disadvantage' in the past and this one is still on my 'To Do' list.

Sholud I simply let it go or do you feel it's worth pursuing?... Read more

Had a similar experience recently. Was invited to do a presentation to health professionals at local hospital. They enclosed a parking sticker for me to use in adjacent streets because nobody (not even doctors apparently!) can park in the hospital grounds.

After dropping off several crates of computer equipment at the door, I took the car off to a side street down the road a bit. Again, I checked the street furniture and thought I had parked in a safe area. When I returned later in the day, I found a parking ticket on the windscreen. Had to pay £20 within 14 days or similar or £40 thereafter.

It turned out I had misinterpreted the signage. A post with a small arrow pointing in one direction said OK for 'voucher holders' and an arrow the other way was 'resident's parking'. I had even completed the voucher carefully with details of arrival time etc and displayed it prominently.

To cut a long story short, I sent off the cheque with a polite letter explaining how, under pressure, to arrive in time for an important appointment etc I had made a mistake about the rather confusing plethora of signs in that particular street.

Within a week I had my cheque returned with a letter of apology.

Result!

A freind of mine with 6 children has decided to get a new people carrier. He seems obsessed by the Peugeot 807 and as I have no experience with people carriers I thought I would ask you lot for your opinions.
BTW he has seen a model for £23,500 which he seems intent on getting but it seems a lot of money.
Any help will be appreciated as always.

Need to change the oil in my VW PAssat TDI. Can i jack up the car, undo the sump, lower the car and let it drain. Jack-up again, re-fit the sump, lower and then re-fill.

My way around not having axel stands or ramp! Practical?

Also, what about Shell Optimax vs Gastrol. What do B-roomers put in their TDI's??

hello again folks,

It would be superb if anyone can help me with this one...

I have a 01 206 1.9Diesel that I recently took on a trip from London To Scotland...

the car ran fine until about 20 miles from home when it started pulling and misfiring. I also started to hear a horrendous noise from the engine and severe power loss, no warning lights (the best way to describe it would be that when I reved the engine it sounded like a diesel truck rather than a car..diesel engine noise x5) then after ten miles it just stopped. I asked some mechanic friends and they said at a guess it was bad fuel clogging the injector and the engine was flooded and must have blown it out.Which made sense as on Tuesday the car was jumping all over the place after filling up with petrol the night before. With the noise now gone and therefore nothing to check we left to come back down only to get as far a Gretna when the noise and pulling, misfiring started again. So we pulled over called the AA, he came out plugged the computer in with no faults reported started the engine with no problems or noises...it was fine again until London albeit we drove at 60 all the way home...no problems since other than the engine runs like crap...

Please help...

cheers if you can... Read more

I would like to propose a Southern Backroom meet at the Beaulieu Motor Musuem in the New Forest (M27/M3 Junction 18 miles, Bournemouth 25 miles, Bristol 80 miles, Central London 95 miles)

Sat 11 October, meet at a pub (TBA) in the vicinity for an early lunch, before taking in the delights that Beaulieu has to offer. ( www.beaulieu.co.uk/ )

For those with families less than overjoyed at the idea of a motor museum, Beaulieu is also able to offer a delightful Palace House and a 16th century Abbey and gardens.

If that doesn't get the familys going, there is also Bucklers Hard ( www.bucklershard.co.uk/ ) and the rest of the New Forest available (bring your waking shoes or your mountain bikes).

Please only post on this thread if you genuinely would like to take part. That way, I can see what kind of space we will need at a local pub.

Hope to see you there,

As Beaulieu is less than 5 mile from home I could be up for this one.
Beaulieu Road Pub is OK, but if you want Beefeater stylee fare the place to go is The Heath in Diben Purlieu, about 4 miles from Beaulieu, just off the main A326. Fancy a decent pint in a spit n sawdust pub try The Lord Nelson (my beloved Nellie), in Hythe village (5 miles), they also do food but this is one small pub, if there footie on forget it. Dont bother with anything in Beaulieu itself, to dam pricey, and probably busy too.
A bit off the beaten track but with probably the best food at reasonable prices anywhere in the UK, try the Fleur de Lys in Pilley (I dont own it honest), about 3 miles Lymington side of Beaulieu.
Here endeth the tourist information broadcast.

Beaulieu Motor Museum is good, but the price is quite high

The lady comes back to me with a quote for £460 from vw dealer to supply and fit new bumper, surely this can't be right???

Any thoughts anyone, be much appreaciated.

I'm always amazed at the traffic at my local sypermarket.

The main carpark is always packed, people reversing, looking for spaces, fighting over spaces, racing trolleys around.

I always park in the overflow which is about 30 metres away and have the place to myself.

Even odder is the behavour at the gym where I am a member. People will almost kill to get 10 metres closer to the front door before spending hours getting sweaty on various machines.

I park in the corner before my gentle exercise and crash out in the jacuuzi.

the problem you have is the fuel filter is drowing in air/from the lift pump diafram that you pump diesel up with or if your model dosen't have this then it's the rubber seals in the filter housing remady is to fit new filter and all new rubber seals

Thinking of looking at this vehicle as follows:

W Reg, 27000 miles. Silver Metallic. Full dealer service history. 1 Owner. 23 month Nissan Warranty and Breakdown Cover.Aircon.PAS.ABS.Alarm.Central Locking.Airbags.Electric Windows.

Asking price is just under 5k, sounds reasonable with the warranty

Anything to watch out for with these, and any opinions/alternatives?

Cheers

I have a 1997 P 2.0 SE with all the toys. Great car.

It is not much to look at, but neither am I, so we are well matched. Lovely smooth engine and excellent handling. The gearbox can be a little notchy, and sometimes I yearn for a smoother ride over our bumpy country roads, but apart from that I cannot fault it.

Sounds like a good price too.
