I've been meaning to ask for ages. Who the DICKENS writes the little sub headings for each letter in HJ's column in the Telegraph?

The puns are truly wonderful, and truly excruciating. It's someone mighty clever. I can't believe it's an anonymous department; they bear the hallmarks of a fiendish individuality.

Thanks for the clarification HJ. Nice to know sometimes you're not beaten over the Ed.

My wife has a T reg 1.4 petrol Fiesta. Under normal cruising, everything is normal, however under moderate to hard acceleration, the engine response is strong and healthy, but the speedometer and rev counter suddenly drop to zero. Easing up on the throttle or allowing the engine to catch up brings the rev counter and speedometer instantly back to normal. The car has now done over 80K with this fault but the local Ford dealer has no ideas. The problem annoys harder driving daughter who now has the car. Any ideas?? Read more

Do the lights and other displays go out at the same time?

If so, the earth or a common rail power supply on here is a good place to start, followed by the connector itself.

If not, check continuity of solder joints on the connector and the PCB.

please back room, can we have no more of this rubbish?
a brief trawl through the BR this morning came up with at least two instances. If i complain about a pop-up ad that never goes away no matter how many times i look at it then my remarks will be instantly censored but it seems quite in order to insult the french...i bet denigratory references to people from africa or the far east would be censored quickly enough. Can we have a brief explanation of why the current generation of c-r diesels no longer need the 5-second warm-up of the previous generation? Is it just the high-pressure fuel, or is there more to it than that? (MM?) Read more

I reckon that glow plugs in the latest direct-injection diesels are more to do with cold start emmissions, than anything else.

Anyone going to this?

It's at Stanford Hall near Rugby on Sunday 14th and easy to get to from the M6/M1/A14.

A good day out and also there's an interesting motorcycle museum including a 2WD one.

ER....27 hours each way in the care of ************** Airlines Growlette with a Philippines passport little or no chance of getting UK tourist visa as a single woman. (Your lot happily let all those soap-dodgers in without demur, but a decent upstanding self-sporting tourist of reasonable means is not welcome....)

However, we had pork and chicken satés with peanut sauce and Java rice and an incalculable number of San Miguels and thought of everyone.

Must do beter next time.

You are Tommy Walsh, and I claim my £5.

I've found an independent toyota dealer who will supply a new unregistered Toyota Yaris 1.4D-4D GS 3 door in metallic on the road for £6995. This is the pre-face model which had a brochure price of £9365 plus £275 for metallic. Seems a brilliant deal! His opening price was £6995, haven't tried haggling yet. What Iwould like to know from the Backroom is can I expect the dealer to drop the price any further. He says he can't!

True, but it'll be on a 53 and you'd have to pay more than this for a 6 month old tiny miler from a supermarket, even registered on a 52 or 03 plate.

It's not a new car in the truest sense but I can't see how paying £1500 more for a new T3 would be worth the reduction in risk; nor how you'd be much any better off with a used one that could also have stood for several months.

What difference does it make to the grip, performance and mpg of the Audis?

Is it really necessary or would most people outside of rally drivers not even notice?

Bottomline - is it worth it, or just a lot of money for a little badge? Read more

Steve,

The real advantage in the awd is not in the 0-60 time but the general handling (wet or dry) and real world acceleration, ie out of bends, roundabouts not from a standing start.

The extra complexity of the drive train is a weight and friction penalty thus increasing 0-60 times and fuel consumption. But these negatives must be weighed against many other benefits.
