..or am I the only unfortunate victim of this italian job.

Although I couldn't complain about the car (much), I found spares could be a real problem, so much so that even SWMBO gave me the blessing to get another one cheap for spares!

Oh and the rust, well mine wasn't that bad but would have needed sills welding for next MOT at 8 years old.

Fantastic engine though - even the SOHC which mine was.

The only main problem, I had a real job selling it. No one knew what they were!

Haven't seen any on the road for years now, what happened to them all? Has an eccentric millionaire decided to buy them all up? Have they all been made into kit cars? Who knows?

If anyone has seen a silver Regata Weekend reg no G40BPA. That was mine.

Any observations welcome!

Yes I owned on of these lovely cars, an E reg turbo diesel saloon for just over a year.

I got it as I wanted a cheap diesel commuting car but on a budget of 500 quid.
Compared to a rusty smoking 1.6 Escort diesel and a 1.7D visa with no brakes the regata was an obvious bargin. Electric front windows! Sunroof! Central locking!
Fanatastic heating system display with LEDs that changed colour as you adjusted the temperature! Full set of dials including rev counter to about 7000 rpm (why? it would not rev beyond 3000 rpm).

I was able to haggle the price down as funnily enough the seller was having difficulty getting anyone interested in the car. I put 25,000 miles on the car in about 15 months of use during which I only had to replace part of the exhaust and do oil changes, so pretty reliable from a mechanical point of view. The electrics started to play up of course but mainy just the dash warning lights which could be ignored. The central locking became a problem when it refused to stay locked. The technique in the end was to lock via one of the back doors holding the button down and waiting for the furious clicking to subside before slamming the door. To be honest I don\'t know why I bothered as I\'m sure no one would have stolen it.

I enjoyed driving the car for a time as it had a kind of \'so bad its good\' charisma about it. I could park it anywhere as I didn\'t care if it got vandalised. I could get out of junctions and carve through traffic as others understandably wanted to keep their distance.
Also in the unlikely event that you could get in front of someone who had annoyed you, you could floor it and the turbo would wind up to full boost to deploy a massive cloud of smoke from the rear. And I mean massive. Still passed the emissions tests at MOT time though and returned 48 mpg without fail.

I scrapped it in the end when a repair bill of 400 loomed as I had at that point grown a little tired of the heavy clutch and the gear change that put up a spirited resistance to any change of ratio. Unsurprisingly I couldn\'t give it away and had to pay 20 quid to the scrap man, even after delivering it!

As bad as it was I regretted its passing after its replacement, a Rover 827 Sterling, turned out to be the most unreliable car I have ever owned.

Cheers,

Mat.

I think it is a fault light, similar to the GM Di engines.

It could be my imagination but it seems like my 97 VR6 engine runs smoother & picks up speed better in damp conditions. It pulls well anyway but there does seem to be an improvement in the wet. Any ideas as to a potential technical reason for this or is it just a "fluke" ( or my imagination of course !).

many thanks for the input ( and hugely impressive technical info! ) everyone. I guess there could be a "dry weather fault" with my VR6 but it seems to perform well all round really - it just feels a wee bit more eager in damp conditions.
For the record, I think the Golf VR6 is a fine car and great fun to drive, notwithstanding that the handling could be a lot better ( depends how fast you want to navigate bends though really! ) and clearly other more modern machinery has overtaken it dynamically.

Goodness only knows HJ. Doesn't light my candle, but if people sniff a cheap beemer 3 series / A4 rival, it's bound to attract interest.

The girl in the pics from the Frankfurt launch is rather attractive!

(That should get it a few more clicks!!)

I have a Peugeot 305 Auto which occasionally refuses to start.

What I mean is I turn the key in the ignition and instead of the starter motor turning over there is a click from somewhere behind the dashboard or beneath the gear selector - difficult to tell. When this happens I can sometimes "fluke" a start by holding the key in the ignition position and flicking the gear selector between Drive and Neutral and the starter might catch. If that fails after a few tries the car won't start until stone cold beyond this point.

The battery seems fine.

Anybody else had a similar problem ? Any ideas anyway ?

Why thank you Mr. Whizz!;-D>

A new petrol head mate informs me the "click" I hear can only possibly emanate from the starter motor as it fails to engage.

So that's one mystery solved, I suppose.

It's OK HJ, you are not alone. I would rather drive around several blocks and walk a mile back than (try to) reverse park between 2 cars. I look at this way: being a genius in so many ways causes nature to compensate by leaving some of us less good at what others regard as mundane tasks.

Question BMW vis Rover
OldOiler

As anyone got any technical data comparisions for the 320d - 150bhp and the Rover using the BMW unit - 166/131bhp, is it just fuel pump or does it go deeper??
Have seen re chips for 180 bhp for the BMW unit.

we have a t reg focus estate, bought 18 months ago from car dealer with an "insurance warranty". on the day we bought this car (or day after can't remember) my wife started it up on our driveway and there was a loud bang and the gearbox had gone. it was taken by trailer back to dealer and repaired under insurance warranty. but was always stiff - we were told it would get easier but it hasnt in 16000 miles. now it is extremely difficult to get into reverse gear (sometimes literally impossible even after engaging first and rolling forward a bit) and it keeps jumping out of second. any suggestions??
thanks. rob Read more

thanks for that. it has been looked at by local ford dealer who couldn't get it to jump out of gear (its jumped out 2 or 3 times in last week/10 days). also its nearly always difficult if not impossible to get into reverse. the ford garage says its not abnormal? anyone got any ideas.

2- also sometimes when you try to accelerate at low speeds in particular it sort of jerks forward. the garage tester says this is because the car is misfiring occasionally. would this have damaged the cat ? any knowledge of this problem??

thanks

My neighbour has overheated his Renault Espace 2.1TD and has been advised by his garage that it requires a new engine. How likely are you to trash this engine by overheating it? He's looked around to try and obtain a replacement/exchange engine but they seem to be in extremely short supply. Can anyone suggest a reputable supplier please (he's South Coast based but I guess that's not essential)?

Thanks

Thanks guys. Hugo, were you happy with the service (and the engine) you got from Universal? I guess you must have been, otherwise you wouldn't be recommending their services here :-)

Last night, driving home down the A3(M) I noticed that all (apart from one which is set back from the road near butser hill) the lay-by's were coned off both north and south, over 15 miles plus.
The signs were covered over with black bags and tape and a higher than normal police presence was apparent (two cars travelling down the A3, and a collection around the bottom of the M275)

Is this due to the Arms fair in London or may be a visiting digitary?
Maybe Sept 11 is worrying folks "upstairs"?
