THe Growler

I have a feeling I have blathered on about this before but why on earth can't manufacturers fit reversing sensors as standard? We can see from these posts that they are inexpensive enough, and I'm sure I could do without a couple of cup holders or some of those meaningless useless microscopic buttons on the radio that need pages 84-176 of the manual to explain what they do and which I've never bothered to read anyway, if cost was an issue.

On two successive vacations in Malaysia the car rental company gave me the local Mitsubishi-based Proton. On both cars reversing sensors were standard fitments. They were an absolute blessing. Safety in car manufacture seems to be predicated on what you may encounter from the front (airbags, belts, etc) but nary a thought given to the hazards that lurk behind waiting to bite you in the bum.

On the after-market fitment issue, where I live any car accessory supermarket will sell you a Chinese reversing sensor. Some even make a bird-like twittering noise as well to warn unwary pedestrians they are about to be flattened.

Hi all,
car is a 2.0L 16v ecotec with auto box 89K on clock. Recently done an oil-change & put in vauxhall's 10w40. I have been using their 5w40 but thought it was time to lower the cost. Since then have had tappet noise from the exhaust side rocker area. I've done a flush & gone back to the 5w40 but still can hear the noise. (No apparent loss of power.) On Wed. I put some Comma flush in & left it in (as it says u can) whilst driving.

I plan to change oil again soon , but have I knackered the tappets? I didn't want to just give car to a garage (I'm ok doing many jobs) but I'm a bit concerned about stripping the engine.

Any info. appreciated. I've heard bits of info. but nothing sound.

Cheers,
Pete Read more

They won't charge as much. I just don't like handing them a blank cheque as there is a £75+VAT per hour labour rate.

I had the 1.6 estate back in the late eighties.

The chassis turned into paper and I part exchanged it and got £100.

I received a phone call two months later asking if I was still the owner as it had been nicked and abandoned in Stafford. The brakes were awful. I had to pump them to get the thing to stop but it was a brilliant car to drive. Read more

I think the closest relative you'll ever see in the UK is the Regata. If I am right, the regata is the Front wheel drive son of the 131/Mirafiori.

They were rust buckets as well.

I am selling my car which has a private plate. Obviously I will remove this and (hopefully) replace it with the original reg as I still have the old no plates.

Could anyone advise me of the cost to do this through the DVLA and if any/what forms need to be filled in. I would normally try and find out myself but Ive had a hard day!

Thanks in advance for any replies! ;-)

this doesn't always apply, my sisters boyfriend has a Toyota MR2 which had its full reg. L*** ABC etched in to the windows, he then applied his own personal reg but decided to transfer this number when he bought a bike, the number given to put on the MR2 is completely different but obviously still an L reg.

Do anyone know a better way of flushing the cooling system on a ford fiesta 1.25 zetec rather than taking the themostat off which is a big job because the alternator will need to come off with it.
I need to flush the cooling system because i am filling it up with monoethylene glycol (orange coloured) instead of ethylene glycol (blue coloured) due to i cannot get hold of the blue stuff. The haynes manual say NOT so mix the two different types.
Any replies will be appreciated Read more

My friend has a Passat TDI 115 and has a problem with the coolant temperature gauge. As the car warms up it just comes on to scale and slowly rises just short of normal temperature then quickly falls back off scale and continues to cycle like this whilst the car is running. Definitely no overheating problems and engine management is OK with no faults. Having checked under the bonnet with the "TDI" cover removed, I can't find the coolant temperature sensor. I would have expected it to be in the cylinder head somewhere.
Any help/experience with locating the sensor please. Read more

I put an identical query here a few weeks ago re my Audi A4 TDi 115. (Try a search on 'Audi A4 coolant temperature guage')

I had the thermostat and temperature sensor replaced under warranty (just! car had about a week left.) Fine now.

Is the car under warranty? I'm not sure of the cost otherwise, but I don't think it's a major expense, especially if done at a non-franchised garage.

I have a friend working in Moscow, and I thought I might drive out to see her in February. Things can get reasonably cold there: minus 20 is not unexpected, and if there's a cold snap, it can get to minus 35 or so, though by that stage, minus 10 is the norm.
Driving a Rover 420 diesel, as I do, is there anything I should know about diesel at that temperature? I know it used to freeze, but I had understood that this was now not the case. Any answers/advice?

A set of snow chains may not be a bad idea.....

I have a set that I bought for my 416 that may fit. I guess from our profile you are in Sheffield, but if you plan on passing Peterborough in the next few weeks, I would be happy to lend them to you.

I can't give you details on sizing right now as they are at home in Poole (whilst I enjoy my week nights in a hotel in the aforementioned East Midlands town) but can look them out at the weekend if you are interested.

Failing that, Halfords can sort you with cheapies for about £40 or www.roofbox.co.uk/ can supply you with more robust chains (recommended if you may use them for more than a few miles)

Unfortunately snow tyres wont be an option as the drive down on normal roads will more than likely destroy them.

I recentley purchased a tigra 1.6i. over the past week or so the cars tick over has been getting worse. I thought it might be in need of some new plugs but thats not made much difference. If you rev the engine the revs seen to stay up to long which is a pain when changing gear and when the revs drop back down the car nearly stalls. This has been getting worse by the day. I noticed when I changed the plugs they were all rather black, and the cat smells really strong. Can anyone help.

Idle Air Control Valve gummed up I guess? [Says DL who isn't conversant with the Tigra!)

It used to be a common Vauxhall problem, anyways.

On my old VW Jetta (120k) there is a muffled but definate\'donk\' when accelerating hard from a standing start. It sometimes happens if I accelerate slowly and suddenly increase. There are no problems on full lock steering, is this likely to be a driveshaft? My stepfather thinks it might also be a gearbox mount gone.
It is not particulary bad (i have been in cars with very bad driveshafts and they sound far worse than this does) and am wondering whether I should just wait until it gets bad enough to make a definate diagnosis. Also, where could i get a replacement shaft assuming it is one, German and Swedish do not have it as a catalogue item. Read more

Check the inboard CV joint behind the exhaust, in time these can get damaged by the heat (or at least the grease does etc...).
