I have a 306 1.9TD, 1996.

Recently I have noticd that the Water in Fuel Filter warning light keeps popping up.Its never always on, but every now and then it lights up, and might be on all day long, other days nothing happens.

I have had the car serviced after this started happening, fuel filter was replced in the service but the same light keeps popping on every now and then. Just wondering is this something to worry about? Could it be the synthetic oil I am using? Catstrol GDT Magnatec 10w-40w?

Any help appreciated.

This light is present on some but by no means all PSA XUD engined cars. My 205 had one, constantly lit and plug eventually pulled. BX goes without. No problem either car in a cumulative 200k miles. Anyone found it a lifesaver?

Hi,
00W 306 2.0 SE Cabriolet
I've got an annoying rattle that seems to coming from the rear silencer area. I have taken the car to the garage to check the exhaust mountings and they can't find anything wrong.

Here are the symptoms:

When the car is cold, if a door is opened then closed. A metallic rattle can be heard at the rear of the car. I have found that the rattle doesn't happen if you hold the rear silencer tail pipe when a door is closed. The rattle only lasts for a few minutes when driving. It disappears after 5 mins driving. When the car is warm its fine. I thought it could be a caliper rattling. But I think its the exhaust. Does anyone have any ideas how I can fix this. I was thinking of changing the rear silencer brackets. Thught about changing the the rear box; but it doesn't need changing. Besides which it will be a main dealer job (Express Fit) wouldn't trust the fast fit chains as they have done a bodge job too many times for me with my car exhausts. I had an Uno which ended up requiring a Uno Turbo exhaust as they didn't have anything else and couldn't obtain anything else that could fit!

I suggest you leave it as is.

It won't cause any harm, it'll just make the noise.

Worst case scenario? The exhaust could become blocked, but that would be comparatively rare.

my throttle on idle has being bouncing up and down and it is a sluggish mthrough the rev range, can the throttle potentiometer cause it to be sluggish? Read more

Easy. It won't be the turbocharger seals at fault.

The problem with most manufacturers seems to be that they only allow about 2 to 3 years before redesigning their models.

Does this mean that all of us poor consumers who have the countless faults that occur are mere guinea pigs?

No! When the Manufacturers find they have the faults, they bang out the new facelift and redesigned models and allow all of the faulty cars to run their course with the disgruntled owners.

These owners are usually the unfortunates that have the pleasure of owning ex-fleet cars that have had NO TLC at all.

Take one fleet driver, add inherent manufacturer faults plus quite a few thousand miles and hey presto!!!

There are lot of late reg MK1 Vectras around, they were good value for money in the last 12 months and according this site were not as bad as painted (why am i defending them ?!)

There has been much discussion on this forum over recent weeks of road rage and inconsiderate drivers, I was wondering how many members of the B.R. are actually members of the I.A.M., and whether they feel their membership has improved their driving techniques and anticipation of potential accidents and bad driving by other road users.???? Has any one tried a Hyundai Getz ? The base model car gets a good review in what car, and it now comes with 5 year warranty, 3 years three servicing and 3 years RAC cover, all for £6995, before haggle. Guess you could get a few hundred £'s off that.

It looks OK, not a bread van by any means, and has the basic kit.. often missing from most budget cars from Ford and Vauxhall..

including...

PAS, Steering height adjust, central locking, Dual airbags, ABS with EBD, electric windows, CD player and split fold rear seats.

Compared to a base 1.0 corsa or VW lupo, this appears to be a bargain. And if anything goes wrong it appears covered.

Could this be a good buy?

There is a great TV ad for the Getz, involving kung-fu fights, motorbikes, FBI etc. It was filmed about a block from my office, and was obviously for the international market as well as for SA. Is it flighted in Britain?

I've read some of the stuff on here re "simmering" turbocharged engines. I presume it also applies to the HDi. As the performance of the engine oil is involved, can anyone recommend an oil that is less likely to cause problems in the HDi - for example, a low-viscocity synthetic? And what about such products as Slick, which supposedly coats bearing surfaces with teflon or whatever which cannot be removed except by grinding? Does this help? Read more

Ben79

Follow the oil change advice in the current BMW thread, I personally use Total Quartz 9000 (£20 ish for 5 litres) and genuine filters.

With regards the simmering, try and keep the revs low for the last mile or so, and you won't need to idle the engine for longer than it takes to remove your seatbelt, pick up the mobile and find the crooklock.

If you have just stopped at a motorway service station, a full minute or two idling the engine will allow the turbo bearings to cool enough.

Some people recommend oil additives, but I think the majority say that replacing quality oil at 5 to 6,000 miles think that is sufficient.

Fuel additives are recommended, see HJ's FAQ.
