Hi,

I have a Fiesta 1.6v Zetec ( T reg ).

The problem I am having is that every time I stop at a junction she stalls. This is even happening after she is warmed up.

I had someone plug a hand help computer into the system.

The fault came up with 'Fuel Too Rich'.

So I have started to use Unleaded Super Plus but still have the same problem.

According to the Ford manual it says to remove fuse no 34 if you have to put a lower octane petrol.

This should overide the engine management system.

Tried this, guess what still keeps stalling.

Any ideas Read more

My wifes fiesta 1.3 endura engined fiesta revs like mad between gearchanges. I have put a new throttle position sensor on but this made no difference at all, I also cleaned out the idle control valve, no difference. A friend who's a fitter, plugged it into his machine and 'throttle position sensor' keeps showing, so he disconnected the speed control sensor, which has stopped the revving but now it feels sluggish, and it doesn't seem right to disconnect one thing to counteract another, any ideas you fiesta experts? Thanks in advance.

I was in France yesterday and Renault were advertising the new Megane with 5 year warranty. Now I thought they only did that with really reliable cars.... Read more

Absolute desperation to shift metal and that applies to all the European manufacturers not just Renault.

It is excellent news for the consumer though. As I elaborated on in a previous post, cars simply cannot get any cheaper. Ergo expect different incentives such as better interest free/PCP deals and some considerably longer warranties to persuade you to part from your hard earned.

I have Dunlop SP3000 tyres on my R75. One of the tyres has a slight ridge running down the sidewall (at right angles to the rim). This can be felt by running a finger over it. I've noticed that if you feel the other tyre sidewalls there are other slightly raised areas, effectively like hard spots which you cannot see but can feel. Is this just a characteristic of the tyre or do you think I'm in need of a replacement tyre?.
Comments appreciated.

Question Audi 80
test1234

I have an Audi 80, 1989, 2L, 4cyl, EFI, automatic.
The engine jitters, and shakes, revs are unstable and sometimes too low. It used to rev high in the morning before it drops and although it may stay below 900 it was still unstable. I do not know what to adjust. Luckily it doesnt die before close when you're parking at the lights. If anyone has come across anything like this before - please let me know via mfilipo@xtra.co.nz. I have replaced all spark plugs, oil, oil filter but havent done the air filter as I dont know how. Let me know please - I need your help!!!. Another problem is a leak in the transmission fluid if anyone has encountered this - let me know. The transmission makes a slipping noise when changing gears (automatic). I appreciate your responses.

Sorry for the delay, it's taken me a little while to find the info.
The vehicle data sticker may usually be found behind the spare wheel - see www.vagparts.com/pages/data.htm .
I suspect that the engine code is 3A, in which case it has the KE-Motronic fuel system. It's possible that NZ cars are different to UK ones, in which case none of the following applies...
The idle stab. valve is a metal cylinder that plugs into the black ribbed hose by the throttle plate assembly. It should have a rubber pipe running to the underside of the inlet manifold. A good clean out in carburettor cleaner may do the trick.
The actual idle speed test and adjustment procedure is too complicated to describe here - can you get hold of the relevant Haynes manual? Number 1491 covers the 2.0l 3A engine.
Ian.

Do you remember an article I posted some time ago about a reletive of mine having to fork out £800 for a new Gearbox on his Scoda felicia 1.9 diesel at just over 19,000 miles because it was one month out of warranty, since then the front suspension on one side broke and he had to wait over a month for the parts. The latest problem is the engine, At 23,000 miles it now needs a rebore and a new cambelt as the one on there is somewhat frayed. There is a rumour that VW are using sub spec parts in Scoda's, could this possiby be true?. And by the way neither the camshaft or crankshaft sprockets are keyed onto their shafts. Read more

I think Skoda will never beat the old German cars or any Japanese car for reliability. There are many unhappy customers than ever before for Skoda?s and Volkswagon from many surveys. Even the reports in this years Which? shows that this is case. Volkswagon became below average for reliability, and is in the same league as Citroen now!

But, I also think Japanese are going downhill. Take the Toyota Avensis: this car only got 96% for reliability. However, Honda scored 99% (Jazz) although the sample size was smaller and caused confusion. What I mean is that the Jazz scored highly, but then we assume not only was the sample size too small to be fully representative but also that the owners cover less miles compared to say the Avensis.

I hope a new manufacturer will enter the market like Kymco did in the scooter industry. Why? Well, any scooterist with good knowledge knows these bikes are very reliable (based on Honda engine). But, not only are they more reliable than Honda themselves, parts backup is excellent, parts are a lot cheaper, build quality is as good as Honda and they cost less. But most scooterists ignore this and buy Italian and regret it. Because Kymco is not well known as a brand (like triumph was) consumers will buy what they think are the only Japanese scooters about.

My 1.8L Xantia seems to have developed a sterting problem.

There was not much petrol in it when I tried to start it tonight and it ran but not for long.

After several attempts, gave it up as a bad job, got some petrol from my garage, put that in, only a couple of litres and still won't start.

The push button code is OK, coming on green, however, I have now run the battery down and will give it up until morning.

Hopefully a full 5 litres of petrol from the garage will do the trick, but are there any obvious probs with this I should look at if this doesn't work?

Further info, the car has been parked on my drive for a few days, which is reasonably steep. The back end is somewhat lower than the front.

Any ideas please?

Well, both of you are right.

I did put about 5 litres in it today and it worked!

I remember a similar problem with my pug 309 a few years ago. The car would not pull out of the side of the road normally as the tank was so low, due to a camber. So, I pulled out using the starter! Once I was on the level it ran fine and got me to the next garage.

Many thanks

Well, I'd like to nominate myself, at least in an honorary sense in that I am still alive. For those who don't know, the Darwin Awards are dedicated to those people whose cretinous behaviour results in their untimely demise, thereby doing the whole human race a favour by removing themselves from the gene pool.

My near-contribution to a marginal increase in the planet's IQ was the result of trying to help my brother-in-law with a dodgy connection on his rear light cluster. He thought that maybe the problem was simply that the contacts to the bulb were a bit flattened, but he didn't have a screwdriver with a narrow enough blade to try and lever them up slightly in order to get a better connection. Fortunately, Mr Helpful (that's me) was on hand with a small key which was just the right size, and also utterly devoid of any insulating properties whatsoever. But did I let that stop me? Did I heck!! Cue sparks, a poorly choreographed yet briefly spectactular dance, and a string of asterisks. This provides (in my case at least) incontrovertible proof that any idiot really can get a degree.

Right, enough about me - anybody else want to nominate themselves? Only condition is that it must be motoring-related. The more unusual, the better. Don't be shy!

Gotta go now, the sparks bristling out from the keyboard are playing havoc with my hair.

I would nominate a work mate of a friend who hated his works LDV
van so much he decided to see what effect a 5th to first gearchange would have at 50 mph.
The van skidded to a halt after a very large bang and spewed oil all over the road.
The mechanic who repaired the van commented that he had never seen valve bounce on a diesel before.
The guy was very lucky to to keep his job and the ultimate insult was they rebuilt the engine and gearbox and made him drive it for another couple of years.

Having seen a potential car (via the autotrader link here), what does '110 Point Check' mean? Just because the dealer has checked it doesn't mean they've fixed it does it?! Or does it?!

What does that mean and what should I expect for it? Read more

Good point that, (no pun intended) I should have said that before really, I'm looking to up-grade my 1988 Corolla for another Corolla, 1995-1998 age group, 3 door prefered (better access since I have to open the door fully to get out). I know several people who've had them and have been very pleased with them.

If CBCB stands for the car by car breakdown I've done that, (even printed it off already!) the only requirement I have is PAS and that seems to be standard on this age group anyway. I went right the way through the cars of that size and nothing else compares in my opinion!

As for car values I've ended up seeing how sales asking prices compare, trade and private. You forget what you need to know about buying each time after you've done it!

When these flash up the limit, they are just warnings right? They don't actually lead to a fine like a camera do they? It's just I passed through about 5 today... Read more

Dan J, would you be kind enough to give me reference to "Proof that there was a need for the limit at a given tim"? The reason I am asking is that on the A1, for one mile South of Stamford, Lincs, there have been works on the centre reservation crash barriers but the work has finished, 2 weeks ago at least, and there are still signs saying "Roadworks ahead", 2 lay-bys are coned off and there is a 40 mph limit in force, ordered by temporary signs on metal 'A' frames. No cameras but I think somebody has simply forgotten to take away the signs. What might be legality of this set up vis a vis "speeding" thru completed roadworks?
