Having seen a potential car (via the autotrader link here), what does '110 Point Check' mean? Just because the dealer has checked it doesn't mean they've fixed it does it?! Or does it?!

What does that mean and what should I expect for it?

it should mean that the dealer has thoroughly checked the car

but I could go round my car and count -
has it got the right number of doors -5 (5)
has it got the right number of wheels (5 with spare) (10)
has it got the right number of wheel nuts 20 (30)
has it got the right number of windscreen wipers 3 (33)
has it got the right number of spark plugs 4 (37)

and it wouldn't take much to get that number up to 110 (you might have guessed I've been thinking about this recently, mainly because a certain breakdown organisation is advertising a 28 point check on the TV, and I came to the conclusion you could do a 28 point check by walking round the car and taking the wheel trims off but not opening the bonnet)

Good point, Borasport. Many years ago I bought a used Vauxhall Astra which had allegedly had a 50 point (or more?) check, and it was ticking over at 2,500 rpm. Surely someone would have noticed this on the PDI? Makes you wonder what else they didn't pick up.

I honestly believe that most used cars are given, at best, a very brief once over in the belief (hope?) that the buyer will discover and have rectified elsewhere any faults.

Get an independent check done on the car and haggle the price down to get your money back.

ah so it is just advertising baloney then? maybe I'd trust it more if it was a main dealer saying that rather than a local one - but having read the garages why do they do that? thread I'm not so sure now!

Are the breakdown organisations pre buy checks any good then or do they miss more than they should? Do they not check things as standard that really speaking they should? Last time I bought a car I had a friend look it over but he's moved away now.

it is not necessarily baloney, ww, and that's what makes car buying difficult

there are load of other questions - if you don't feel you have the mechanical expertise yourself, are you looking at a car, how much is it worth, have you looked up the CBCB on the model, do you know other people who have the same sort of car, do you know who have bought from the same garage

If you are looking at a particular car, then I would suggest if you ask questions here, you'll get a response.

good luck

Good point that, (no pun intended) I should have said that before really, I'm looking to up-grade my 1988 Corolla for another Corolla, 1995-1998 age group, 3 door prefered (better access since I have to open the door fully to get out). I know several people who've had them and have been very pleased with them.

If CBCB stands for the car by car breakdown I've done that, (even printed it off already!) the only requirement I have is PAS and that seems to be standard on this age group anyway. I went right the way through the cars of that size and nothing else compares in my opinion!

As for car values I've ended up seeing how sales asking prices compare, trade and private. You forget what you need to know about buying each time after you've done it!
